An Empirical Examination Of University Intercollegiate Athletic Expenditures, Jeffrey L. Stinson, Adam Marquardt, Joshua Chandley Jun 2012

An Empirical Examination Of University Intercollegiate Athletic Expenditures, Jeffrey L. Stinson, Adam Marquardt, Joshua Chandley

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

To date, little empirical work has examined the institutional returns associated with athletic program investments. While intangible brand effects are commonly cited, such as athletics serving as the perceptual “front porch” of the institution, direct examination of the effects of athletic programs has often been narrow in scope. Within this study, we assess the contributions of investment in athletics as compared to other areas of institutional investment, on important institutional outcomes. Data for the study was collected from two datasets, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Equity in Athletics dataset. Fixed effects models for NCAA Football Bowl …

Through The Eyes Of Higher Education Attorneys: How Department Chairs Are Navigating The Waters Of Legal Issues And Risk Management, Carol L.J. Hustoles Jun 2012

Through The Eyes Of Higher Education Attorneys: How Department Chairs Are Navigating The Waters Of Legal Issues And Risk Management, Carol L.J. Hustoles

Dissertations

Legal and risk management issues substantially impact the operations of colleges and universities, which face escalating compliance requirements in an increasingly litigious environment. Failing to assess legal liability issues and to constructively address them with risk management processes create vulnerability to claims and litigation, stretching limited institutional resources. Yet research studies are scarce on this topic.

This study used an online survey to obtain input from higher education attorneys across the U.S. regarding their perceptions of frequency and time spent on legal assistance for department chairpersons, chairs’ level of difficulty handling legal and risk management issues, matters having highest adverse …

Negotiations Behind Negotiations: Reaching Out To Constituents, Nicholas Diobilda

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Campus administrators and union leaders are well aware of the numerous problems created by multiple years of funding shortfalls. But the general membership of a campus union, going about its business of teaching, researching, serving the community and happily collecting a paycheck every two weeks, may not be aware of the great effort needed to help the campus thrive and to negotiate agreements beneficial to them and to the campus. Overcoming its members’ ignorance of higher education economics and bargaining is only part of the problem for the union. The other part is to convince a diverse membership, each with …

Negotiations Behind Negotiations: Reaching Out To Constituents, Robert Zazzali

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Reaching consensus within one’s own constituency group, whether from the union or management perspective, is often an overlooked and underappreciated part of the bargaining process. Emphasis is typically on negotiating and getting to “yes” with the other side. While that is the culmination of the process, often the consensus-building that occurs within one’s own membership determines success or failure at the main table. That can be a tall task, given the diverse and at times opposing views and philosophies at play.

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance And Renewal, Gerald Turkel May 2012

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance And Renewal, Gerald Turkel

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The fiscal crisis of higher education currently is being resolved largely through a financing policy of privatization, a pattern that increasingly shifts responsibility to individual students and their families. The politics of privatization makes it ever more difficult for lower-income students to attend college and has become a major financial burden for middle-income people. Beyond the direct financial consequences, privatization has increasingly subordinated the research and educational missions of higher education to the countervailing imperatives of economic growth and competitiveness. Privatization has enhanced the entrepreneurial and corporate features of universities and colleges, increasingly shifting the values of higher education away …

Parallel Session: Reputation Of Private Universities In Pakistan And Its Impact Upon Student Satisfaction And Loyalty, Seema Arif, Maryam Ilyas May 2012

Parallel Session: Reputation Of Private Universities In Pakistan And Its Impact Upon Student Satisfaction And Loyalty, Seema Arif, Maryam Ilyas

International Conference on Marketing

Background: Ranking of private universities is an emerging phenomenon after the establishment of Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan. Ranking is becoming need of time as public and private universities are competing more and more for business and profit. The business of private universities depends upon independent revenue generation; therefore, student retention is crucial for such institutions. Moreover, university image has much to do with establishing the brand in market to attract quality students and faculty and it can be best assured through service quality and student satisfaction. Brown and Mazzarol (2009) have suggested that the university reputation or the …

Understanding Philanthropic Motivations Of Northeast State Community College Donors, Heather J. Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At Northeast State Community College (NeSCC) nearly 70% of students need some form of financial aid to attend. State support is flattening or decreasing and the gap is filled by private donors' support (Northeast State Community College, 2011). Hundreds of donors have made significant contributions to aid in the education of those in the Northeast Tennessee region. The purpose of this study was to investigate the philanthropic motivations of a select group of 4 donors who have given a significant amount to a community college and to garner their specific reasons for doing so.

This qualitative study included 4 interviews …

Impact Of Collaborative Online Formative Evaluation Of The Learning Environment In A Higher Education Course, Aaron Joseph Clark May 2012

Impact Of Collaborative Online Formative Evaluation Of The Learning Environment In A Higher Education Course, Aaron Joseph Clark

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Several works in the academic literature address the benefits of discussion-based formative evaluation for improving the learning environment in higher education courses. However, even one of the most widely used methods for such formative evaluation, the small group instructional diagnosis, has a few challenges and is still utilized far less than student ratings questionnaires. The present study focused on one undergraduate course in the James Madison University College of Education that promotes formative evaluation as an integral part of instructional design. The purpose of this study was to examine participants’ perception about the worth and usability of an online feedback …

Academic Freedom, Contingent Faculty, And Social Rectitude, David Austin Bingler May 2012

Academic Freedom, Contingent Faculty, And Social Rectitude, David Austin Bingler

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

“If education is the cornerstone of the structure of society and if progress in scientific knowledge is essential to civilization, few things can be more important than to enhance the dignity of the scholar’s profession, with a view to attracting into it’s ranks [professionals] of the highest ability, sound learning, and of strong and independent character.” (American Association of University Professors, 2010, p.294) The American Association of University Professors’ 1915 Declaration of Principles on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure hold true for nearly all faculty members in higher education, with the exception of contingent faculty. Today, contingent faculty members make …

Measuring Employability Among College Students: A Validity Study, Megan Rodgers May 2012

Measuring Employability Among College Students: A Validity Study, Megan Rodgers

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The practice of assessment in higher education is often focused on measuring outcomes of student success. However, the potential for a student to obtain a job (i.e., their employability) after graduation is often not directly measured. This reality is unfortunate given the competitive job market and rising cost of an education. One scale, the Employability Skills Inventory (ESI) has been identified as a potential assessment instrument that purports to measure skills necessary for employment in most occupations. Before deciding to use any scale for a particular purpose, one must establish that the scale is both reliable and valid. The focus …

Three Key Challenges Facing Higher Education And Policymakers, Ellen Hazelkorn May 2012

Three Key Challenges Facing Higher Education And Policymakers, Ellen Hazelkorn

Articles

Our preoccupation with the relative standing of universities and national education systems—illustrated by the growing popularity and obsession with university rankings—reflects the consensus that higher education is essential for economic growth, global competitiveness and a civil society. Universities and nations are being measured according to indicators of global capacity and potential in which comparative and competitive advantages come into play. The more globalization drives a single market in education, as it does in most goods and services, the more higher education is a beacon for investment and talent—the more this kind of barometer is inevitable.

Engineering A Place For Women: A Study Of How Departmental Climate Influences The Career Satisfaction Of Female Mechanical Engineering Faculty Members, Monica J. Young

Teaching and Leadership - Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to better understand how female mechanical engineering faculty members' career experiences in academia affect their satisfaction. Specifically, the research considered differences in satisfaction reported by female and male mechanical engineering faculty members in terms of: a) departmental climate, b) nature of work, c) resource allocations, d) departmental policies/practices, and e) overall satisfaction. The study compared the levels of satisfaction reported in survey data collected from 2005-2010 with interview data collected from a subset of the survey population. The survey sample included 237 mechanical engineering faculty members who responded to an online survey developed …
