Exploring The Impact On Students Of Western Universities On Foreign Soil: A Case Study Of Qatar, Richard Bakken Phd
Exploring The Impact On Students Of Western Universities On Foreign Soil: A Case Study Of Qatar, Richard Bakken Phd
Dissertations
The development of branch campuses in higher education is not a new phenomenon. Over the past decades, however, branch campuses have expanded throughout the world as Western universities have begun to deliver their programs and course offerings in countries that expect the West to provide educational (and, by implication, economic) success. Middle Eastern countries in particular have rapidly expanded the number of Western-style branch campuses for native students in their countries. This qualitative research study focused on one specific Middle Eastern country, Qatar, and explored how native students respond to attending a Western university that has been transplanted from the …

Advisory Councils In Executive Education: Insights From Practice, Kevin J. Rose, Théres W. Stiefer
Advisory Councils In Executive Education: Insights From Practice, Kevin J. Rose, Théres W. Stiefer
Journal of Executive Education
Various units within higher education rely on an advisory council to help guide policy, practice, and strategy. These boards usually consist of external business contacts or subject matter experts. In this article, we present a review of the use of advisory councils in higher education, with particular attention given to business education. We then provide advice and information based on our own experience with developing and maintaining an advisory council for an executive education unit. While there is no single best way to engage an advisory board for productive academic benefit, we provide several ideas for consideration in the hopes …
Opportunities And Challenges Of Shifting Identities For Women Leaders In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen
Opportunities And Challenges Of Shifting Identities For Women Leaders In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
It is clear that there are differing cultures, contexts, and complexities among the various groups within higher education, creating a “great divide” on many campuses across the globe. This includes the divide between current faculty and faculty who have transitioned into administration. This panelist has conducted in-depth research on the lived experiences of women university presidents in developing the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies throughout their lives that are required for success leadership in higher education. Within this larger study, data were collected, using the phenomenological research approach, on the educational backgrounds, employment positions, career paths, and related struggles and …

Learners’ Acceptance Of The Use Of Mobile Phones To Deliver Tutorials In A Distance Learning Context: A Case Study At The University Of Ibadan, Gloria Adedoja, Omobola Adelore, Francis Egbokhare, Ayodeji Oluleye
The African Journal of Information Systems
This case study focuses on students’ acceptance of mobile phones for learning purposes within a project that aims to support and engage distance education students by using mobile phones for distance learning tutorials, rather than using technology merely to communicate information or create access to learning resources. The research design is based on Davis's Technology Acceptance Model and tests multiple hypotheses concerning the effects of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, interest in the technology and technology self-efficacy on the use of the mobile tutorials. The evidence gathered confirms that the mobile tutorials enhanced teaching and learning. However, it also …

The intention of this piece is to push thinking beyond NCLB and offer a fresh perspective on how the U.S. educational system might progress in the future. Consider this a call to action to inspire and promote real change in a profession that has been restrained by federal regulations, standardization, and modest funding.

A Foreign Affair: A Phenomenological Study Of Barriers To Adult Liberian Refugees' Success In The American College Classroom, Carla White Ellis
A Foreign Affair: A Phenomenological Study Of Barriers To Adult Liberian Refugees' Success In The American College Classroom, Carla White Ellis
English as a Second Language Faculty Publications & Research
Liberia has survived a fourteen-year civil war. Within this time, many Liberians were forced to flee their countries and seek refuge. The United States and Liberia have held a long-standing friendly relationship; hence, there are thousands of Liberian refugees living within the United States. The educational issues of refugees worldwide is lacking in research. Consequently, the purpose of this dissertation is to gain an understanding of the lived experiences of adult Liberian refugees matriculating within American college classrooms. Through phenomenological methodology, the lived experiences of ten Liberian refugees enrolled within American college classrooms produced valuable results. Three major themes were …

Explaining China’S Economic Performance From The Perspective Of Non-Conventional Determinants, Jingjing Yang, Sana Khalil
Explaining China’S Economic Performance From The Perspective Of Non-Conventional Determinants, Jingjing Yang, Sana Khalil
Business Review
We analyze forecasts concerning China’s growth slow-down and future prospects concerning its economic performance. Extending the discussion on China’s possibility of going through a slow-down in future, we focus on the avoidance of such a possibility by drawing forth the role of gross capital formation, trade openness, higher education enrollment ratio, higher education expenditure, R&D expenditure, population growth and number of inventions in determining per capita income. These non-conventional determinants: number of inventions, government R&D expenditure, higher education enrollment ratio and higher education expenditure, show not only significantly positive link with per capita income but also exhibit strong explanatory power …

Student-Faculty Co-Inquiry Into Student Reading: Recognising Sotl As Pedagogic Practice, Saranne Weller, Grete Kotryna Domarkaite, Joseph Lam Chung Lam, Lidya Utari Metta
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This paper reports the evaluation of a student-faculty collaborative study investigating international students’ perceptions of the role of reading in higher education. The study examined the academic reading and source-use practices of ten undergraduate students in a range of disciplines in one UK university. In previous research on student literacy practices, students are often positioned as research “objects” rather than as active participants with an investment in enhancing the student experience through engagement in pedagogic research. In this paper we present a case study of student faculty collaboration in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). Drawing on the analysis …

Does Boyer’S Integrated Scholarships Model Work On The Ground? An Adaption Of Boyer’S Model For Scholarly Professional Development, William E. Boyd
Does Boyer’S Integrated Scholarships Model Work On The Ground? An Adaption Of Boyer’S Model For Scholarly Professional Development, William E. Boyd
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Boyer’s model of four scholarships as an integrated system engaging and integrating the scholarships of discovery, integration, application, and teaching is being increasingly adopted both by individual scholars and institutions. Here I reflect on my own adoption of this approach almost a decade ago, and I describe one application, its use in defining my professional academic profile. While this does not directly address issues of pedagogy, it provides a sound basis for improved pedagogical practice in higher education. I assess my adoption of Boyer’s model against several benchmarks grounded in the social life of academe: success of promotion; mentoring peers …
An Instrument Validation For A Three-Dimensional Worldview Survey Among Undergraduate Christian University Students Using Principal Components Analysis, Kathy Morales
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the structure, validity, and reliability of the Three-Dimensional Worldview Survey-Form C (3DWS-Form C) for potential use in postsecondary Christian institutions. This instrument delineates from other worldview instruments in that it purports to measure three components of a person's worldview: propositions, behaviors, and heart-orientation. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to examine the underlying component structure and construct validity of the instrument. Cronbach's alpha and the Spearman-Brown prophecy formula were used to assess the internal consistency and reliability of the instrument. Participants were first-year university students attending a large Christian university in Virginia. Results of the study …

The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein
The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
The words “knowledge” and “information” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the connection between them is complex and problematic. Knowledge is a mental product gained from engaging with information. All educational subjects, scholarly disciplines, occupations, and activities produce knowledge as well as information. Because libraries encompass potentially all subjects, professional vision in librarianship would benefit from an examination of knowledge that transcends the methods and topical concerns of individual disciplines. An interdisciplinary (or transdisciplinary) framework in which to view knowledge was pioneered in the post-Sputnik age by Fritz Machlup and Michael Polanyi. Their insights have stimulated scholars to develop research, publications, …

The Essential Value Of Lgbt Resource Centers, Matthew Raymond Damschroder
Theses and Dissertations
Through the voices and experiences of LGBTQ+ students on three campuses, this study provides evidence of the essential value of LGBT Centers as they advocate for and empower LGBTQ+ students. Grounded in theories of college student development, identity development, and Queer theory, the qualitative study draws on 35 semi-structured interviews with students and staff involved with LGBT Centers on three campuses that broadly reflect the diversity of higher education in the United States. In particular, the study answers the following questions: What are historical and current contexts of LGBT Centers? What is the nature of campus climate contexts for LGBTQ+ …

Juveniles And College: Inside Out As A Way Forward, Anne M. Nurse
All Faculty Articles
In this article the author argues that the Inside Out model is ideally suited to help incarcerated juveniles considering enrolling in college postrelease. The transition to college can be extremely difficult for such youth who may lack the cultural capital needed to succeed in higher education. This is unfortunate as research suggests that college can have a range of positive effects, including reduced criminality and increased earnings. With some adaptations to its curriculum, Inside Out classes can provide students with much of what they need to succeed. Best practices are described at the end of the article. © 2013 SAGE …

Profiling Diversity Of Australian Universities, Hamish Coates, Daniel Edwards, Leo Goedegebuure, Marian Thakur, Eva Van Der Brugge, Frans Van Vught
Higher education research
There is a good deal of consensus that institutional diversity in higher education is a good thing. Simply put, systems with more diverse institutions perform better than systems with less diverse institutions. Yet the overall diversity of Australia’s higher education system remains unclear. Significant questions and opportunities remain unresolved. How diverse are Australia’s institutions today? How can stakeholders— particularly institutions and policymakers—understand and manage this diversity? This LH Martin Institute and ACER research briefing seeks to shift discussion of diversity to a more considered level. The analysis moves beyond extant sectoral partitionings and contingent policy interventions to expose emerging dynamics …
A Class Act? Social Class Affirmative Action And Higher Education, Maimon Schwarzschild
A Class Act? Social Class Affirmative Action And Higher Education, Maimon Schwarzschild
San Diego Law Review
Comparing class preferences with racial preferences helps to point up some of the reasons for the allure of class preferences but also points up some of the problems. A crucial consideration is the question of who is to receive class preference. For example, what about immigrants and their children? In general, social class is difficult to define, and this very difficulty would confer great discretion and power on faculties and academic administrators who undertake to bestow class preferences: discretion that would be open to abuse for political, ideological, and other ends. Finally, there is the question of whether preferential treatment …
