“Have A Seat At Our Table: Uncovering The Experiences Of Black Students Attending A ‘Racially Diverse’ University”, Diamond Briggs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recently, the diversity rates at universities in the United States have been increasing (Ortiz-Frontera 2013). With more minorities enrolling into predominantly white institutions (PWIs), one might infer that this signals a major step of progression for the United States. However, it is essential to understand the experiences and challenges that minorities may face when attending these institutions. Understanding these challenges are important because they are often minimized and ignored due to the ambiguity of microaggressions. This can be harmful for Black students psychologically and may impact their self confidence in many ways. In many instances, Black students face many forms …

So how can librarians maintain information literacy instruction throughout a student's academic career? Data collected by the Rivier University librarians showcases the ability to implement information literacy more effectively by streamlining and leveling it out over a four-year period.

The present study addressed concerns over the high risk of university students’ academic failure. It examined how perceived academic control and academic emotions predict undergraduate students’ academic success, conceptualized as both low dropout intention and high achievement (indicated by GPA). A cross-sectional survey was administered to 883 undergraduate students across all disciplines of a German STEM orientated university. The study additionally compared freshman students (N = 597) vs. second-year students (N = 286). Using structural equation modeling, for the overall sample of undergraduate students we found that perceived academic control positively predicted enjoyment and achievement, as well as negatively predicted …

Inspire-On: Stereotype Threat Taught As A Motivation For College/Success, Benjamin Concepcion, Coral Maack

Senior Honors Projects

Stereotype threat refers to being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one’s group (Steele & Aronson, 1995). Stereotype threat is the idea that a person from a stereotyped identity needs to conform to stereotyped behaviors of their identity group. The identities one holds may hinder or enhance performance in many aspects of life.

According to Collegeboard.org, “The gap between earning the opportunity and seizing it is most pronounced among traditionally underserved minority populations. For example, only 3 out of 10 African-American students with high potential for success in AP science course work take an AP science …

The Language Of Information Literacy: Do Students Understand?, Gayle Schaub, Patricia Bravender, Cara Cadena, Christopher Kierkus

Scholarly Papers and Articles

In order to effectively access and utilize the resources of the academic library and to become information literate, students must understand the language of information literacy. This study analyzes undergraduate students’ understanding of fourteen commonly used information literacy terms. It was found that some of the terms least understood by students are those most frequently found in faculty-created research assignments and syllabi and which are used by librarians during library instruction. It is recommended that librarians work with faculty to make them aware of students’ lack of understanding of information literacy terms and that librarians also reinforce their meaning during …

Title Ix Sexual Assault Investigations In Public Institutions Of Higher Education: Constitutional Due Process Implications Of The Evidentiary Standard Set Forth In The Department Of Education's 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, Lance Toron Houston

Hofstra Labor & Employment Law Journal

This Article examines the constitutional due process impact of the vastly opposite and conflicting standards of review in Title IX sexual assault investigations. Thousands of unionized public employees are subject to the terms and conditions of a public university collective bargaining agreement, which requires a heightened standard of "clear and convincing evidence" to discipline employees. At the same timeperhaps unknowingly-the employee is also held to the strict federally mandated standard of a "preponderance of the evidence," which has a lower standard of review. In short, under the same facts and within the same Title IX investigation, the employee is subject …
