Perceptions Of Institutional Quality: Evidence Of Limited Attention To Higher Education Rankings, Andrew G. Meyer, Andrew R. Hanson, Daniel C. Hickman Oct 2017

Perceptions Of Institutional Quality: Evidence Of Limited Attention To Higher Education Rankings, Andrew G. Meyer, Andrew R. Hanson, Daniel C. Hickman

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Rankings of colleges and universities provide information about quality and potentially affect where prospective students send applications for admission. We find evidence of limited attention to the popular U.S. News and World Report rankings of America’s Best Colleges. We estimate that applications discontinuously drop by 2%–6% when the rank moves from inside the top 50 to outside the top 50 whereas there is no evidence of a corresponding discontinuous drop in institutional quality. Notably, the ranking of 50 corresponds to the first page cutoff of the printed U.S. News guides. The choice of college is typically a one-time decision with …

The Relentless Pursuit Of University Rankings Is Creating A Two-Track System, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Lim Oct 2017

The Relentless Pursuit Of University Rankings Is Creating A Two-Track System, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Lim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Global university rankings constructed mainly by Western commercial media outlets, like this week’s Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings, seem to be a perennial sourceof interest in Singapore.Yet, rankings have well-known limitations. The Ministry of Education (MOE) and university leaders frequently deny that they motivate policy orare a basis for institutional evaluation. But they do provide a convenient way to ascertain ifuniversities meet our aspirations for world-class status. At the same time, because rankings tend to emphasise research publications of global significance, there is some skepticism among academics and the general public everywhere of their value to localcommunities.

Review Of The Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (Preq): Final Report, Ali Radloff, Darren Matthews, Yan Bibby, Daniel Edwards

Higher education research

A review of the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ) was conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Education and Training. The PREQ was developed in 1999 to collect information on core aspects of the HDR experience, and is currently administered as part of the Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) which is conducted with recent graduates from Australian higher education institutions. The PREQ currently provides information to government, universities and other stakeholders that help inform improvements to the quality of HDR training. This project was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 of the …

A Rationale For Requiring Philosophy Of Education In Preservice Teacher Programs, Jeffrey Labelle, Gabrielle Belknap Oct 2017

A Rationale For Requiring Philosophy Of Education In Preservice Teacher Programs, Jeffrey Labelle, Gabrielle Belknap

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

To develop a rationale for requiring a free-standing philosophy of education course in preservice teacher programs, the researchers reviewed prior literature to construct a framework to establish such a requirement. A review of required course content in non-Catholic (private and public) colleges and universities with preservice teacher programs in five Midwestern states in the United States revealed that most do not require such a course, hence the need for programs to reconsider how licensure candidates develop their teaching philosophies and review program articulation and course content. This study proposes a fourfold theoretical rationale for requiring philosophy of education of preservice …

Charles Ballard Interview, Justin Carinci Sep 2017

Charles Ballard Interview, Justin Carinci

External Papers and Reports

Professor Charles Ballard of Michigan State University delivered the lecture “The Fall and Rise of Income Equality in the United States” Sept. 27, 2017 as part of the Werner Sichel Lecture Series at Western Michigan University. Ballard detailed the “Great Convergence” of income equality in the United States that grew out of policies of the 1930s and 1940s and a “Great Divergence” of inequality starting about 1980. Ballard called this income gap, which is now greater than during the Gilded Age, “the largest economic phenomenon of our lifetimes.”

Against The Clock, Trey Conatser

Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning

In The Slow Professor, Maggie Berg and Barbara K. Seeber's thoughtful contribution to the conversation on academic labor is to challenge what often goes without saying: that it's good to be more efficient, to be faster, to manage as many tasks as possible at once. How can we practice slowness and pleasure in thoughtful ways for the good of our disciplines and colleagues and, more importantly, for those whom our decisions and actions affect profoundly?

Facilitating An Intergenerational Classroom, Lee Ferrell Sep 2017

Facilitating An Intergenerational Classroom, Lee Ferrell

Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning

At the beginning of the 2016-17 academic year, Needham Yancey Gulley published an Inside Higher Edarticle challenging educators to move away from a seemingly dated term—nontraditional—because it labeled students in a way that could harm their opportunities in the classroom. At the same time, there really are differences among and between the generations, as both the academic literature and popular culture attest. Rather than enjoying a cohesive or intergenerational approach, Millennials, Gen Xers, and Baby Boomers are often pitted against one another in what The Washington Post calls “generational warfare.” This essay considers ways to facilitate an intergenerational classroom …

Why Black Lives (Must) Matter At Uk, Nicole Martin

Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning

As a university committed to creating inclusive learning environments, we must remember that our pedagogical practices and philosophies are not crafted in insolation from our social, political, and cultural environments. The psychic and emotional injury spurred by the events of the summer of 2016 will continue to reverberate across campus as we move into the fall semester. When we boldly address the lingering effects of trauma through our pedagogical practices, we demonstrate how the campus actively creates space for the civic development of students, staff, faculty, and administration.

Are Postgraduate Qualifications The ‘New Frontier Of Social Mobility’?, P. Wakeling, Daniel Laurison Sep 2017

Are Postgraduate Qualifications The ‘New Frontier Of Social Mobility’?, P. Wakeling, Daniel Laurison

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Works

We investigate the relationship between social origin, postgraduate degree attainment, and occupational outcomes across five British age-group cohorts. We use recently-available UK Labour Force Survey data to conduct a series of logistic regressions of postgraduate (masters or doctorate) degree attainment among those with first degrees, with controls for measures of degree classification, degree subject, age, gender, ethnicity and national origin. We find a marked strengthening of the effect of class origin on degree- and occupational attainment across age cohorts. While for older generations there is little or no difference by class origin in the rates at which first-degree graduates attain …

Stretching The Circle: First-Generation College Students Navigate Their Educational Journey, Nicole Zervas Adsitt Aug 2017

Stretching The Circle: First-Generation College Students Navigate Their Educational Journey, Nicole Zervas Adsitt

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation is a qualitative study that explores how first-generation college students experienced their educational journey in a private four-year institution of higher education. Using data from in depth interviews with 19 first generation college students from three private four year institutions, this study looked at how participants made sense of race, class, gender, and Socioeconomic Status (SES) as it intersects with their first-generation status as part of their lived experience within a private educational setting. It also examined how first-generation students traversed the borders and margins of different communities as they pursue higher education and the kinds of cultural …

Navigating The Waters: Vertical Transfer To Four Year Institutions, Carmen Robinson Robinson Aug 2017

Navigating The Waters: Vertical Transfer To Four Year Institutions, Carmen Robinson Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges provide access, preparation and pathways to the four year institution. Transfer students from community colleges are deeply embedded in the higher education system though many have to face the issues of being academically unprepared, varying expectations of the transfer institution, and the stigma of being a transfer student. The study is driven by the following research questions: (1) What is the likelihood of completion for students transferring to a four-year institution from community colleges (2) is there a difference between native students and vertical transfer students in mean completion time? This secondary analysis attained data through the Arkansas …

The War On Higher Education Is Now Underway., Aldemaro Romero Jr. Aug 2017

The War On Higher Education Is Now Underway., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

In 1969, President Richard Nixon formally declared

a “war on drugs” that would be directed to combat the

use of illicit drugs in the U.S. This and other “wars,”

such as the “war on gangs” or “war on cancer” have

come to signify major efforts by the federal government

against something they perceive as a threat.

In past articles in this column I have written about

concerted efforts by some groups and conservative

media to diminish funding for higher education, defame

college education as a passport to better standards

of living, portray colleges and universities as “liberal

nests” out of …
