Career Technical Students And Post-Secondary Education: A Hidden Population In The Massachusetts Education System, Nicolette Haug
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
This research looks into Career-Technical Education in Massachusetts, and what makes these institutions successful. Five career-technical high schools in Massachusetts are highlighted in this capstone project, including Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton, MA, as well as all of the public high schools in the regions. By analyzing standardized test scores and demographics, this project seeks to understand the differences in the way each school is performing academically, and recognizes Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School as a positive outlier. The capstone concludes with recommendations of success factors other career-technical high schools can adopt in order …

Choose Your Own Adventure: An Analysis Of Gender Inequality In Higher Education, Topaz Szewczok, Bethany Parslow
Senior Honors Projects
This project explores how gender inequality in contemporary society impacts the individual’s experiences in their career path, especially in regards to higher education. We document experiences that gender minorities have in their academic disciplines and gain insight on how individuals overcome or do not overcome being the gender minority. Our data come from in-depth interviews with college professors and survey responses from college students in gender segregated fields such as nursing, STEM, early education, and family studies. For this study, according to information gathered and published by the university, a “gendered field” at URI is determined by two thirds or …
Institutional Processes To Determine Community Engagement Impact : A Collective Case Study., Amanda Marie Bowers
Institutional Processes To Determine Community Engagement Impact : A Collective Case Study., Amanda Marie Bowers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative, collective case study is designed to examine the processes by which urban, metropolitan institutions determine the impact their community engagement has within the local community. The study addresses the lack of research on community engagement at the institutional level, the processes that track and coordinate engagement, as well as the perspectives of community partners in this work. Research is more developed regarding individual engagement activities and student learning outcomes than it is to institutional accountability structures or community impact. Studies that center the institution as the unit of analysis are needed to address these limitations in research and …

Examining Generativity Development Among College Student Leaders Who Mentor, Hannah M. Sunderman
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine the influence, if any, of age cohort on generativity among college student leaders who mentor. While previous research has revealed that college student leaders who mentor tend to demonstrate higher levels of generativity than other college student leaders and general college students (Hastings, Griesen, Hoover, Creswell, & Dlugosh, 2015), research as to the development of generativity among college student leaders who mentor has not been determined. Additionally, a need exists for further research on the antecedents of generativity (McAdams, 2001, p. 434). The current study sought to fill these gaps in …

Examining Academic Success For Underrepresented Minority Science Technology Engineering And Mathematics Students Within Hispanic Serving Institutions And Predominantly White Institutions, Denise Romero
Master's Theses
With the higher enrollment among underrepresented minority students (URMs) in higher education, the unique challenges first generation students face has been highly studied, especially in regards to the issue of retention and academic success. That is, how do higher education institutions and professionals best academically support these students through the completion of their undergraduate degree? This paper seeks to compare the identity development of URMs within Hispanic serving institutions (HSI) and predominantly white institutions (PWI) by building on academic literature in higher education addressing identity development and achievement for URMs pursuing an education in STEM. Touro University Berlin
Introduction
Intercultural competence (IC) is an important skill to be gained from higher education. However, it remains unclear what IC means to students and what factors might influence their definitions of IC. The aim of the current study was to qualitatively assess how students at one higher education institution in the USA define IC and to quantitatively test for relationships among IC components and various demographic characteristics, including intercultural experience and study context. A further aim was to descriptively compare the IC definitions from the US sample with the definitions obtained from another sample of university students in Germany.

Self-Perceived Success Of First-Generation College-Going Latinx Students, Sarah Mongillo
Honors Scholar Theses
This exploratory study aims to address the unique experiences of Latinx first-generation college-going students during their undergraduate careers. Literature has emphasized the obstacles Latinx students face during admission phase to college; this research examines the experiences of students attending a predominantly white institution (PWI) in the northeast. Latinx individuals are the most underrepresented ethnic group on college campuses, and those whose parents lack knowledge of the US education system must overcome additional struggles. Through qualitative data analysis of 20 undergraduate students’ survey responses, this study finds that first-generation college-going Latinx students feel isolated in their college experience and prioritize non-traditional …

Part I of this Note highlights the key affirmative action cases leading up to Fisher I. Part II of this Note focuses on Fisher I and the Fifth Circuit’s dicta in Fisher II about the unsolved arena of class-based affirmative action. Part III of this Note details how race-based affirmative action does not capture a critical mass of economic and racial diversity in higher education. Part IV of this Note argues that class-based affirmative action will bolster economic and racial diversity in higher education by focusing more on class characteristics in the holistic review process. This change will capture …

A Proposal For A Minor In Sustainability, Quinn Egner
Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects
It is nearly undeniable that humans are altering the earth and rapidly depleting natural resources, compromising the future of generations to come. While the world is working to innovate and prioritize sustainability, it is important that the University of Richmond must do the same. This proposal is for the addition of a minor in sustainability added to the university’s available education opportunities. The minor will be a total of six classes; three core sustainability classes and three additional classes to effectively cover the three pillars of …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Beyoncé’S “Freedom”: An Examination Of Black College Women’S Experiences At Predominately White Institutions, Robin Phelps-Ward, Courtney Allen, Jimmy L. Howard
Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education
In this article we discuss the illusions of freedom and the complicated relationship Black women have with institutions of higher education. We suggest Beyoncé’s performance of “Freedom” at the 2016 BET Awards metaphorically and symbolically underscores the experiences of Black women in college. Through a rhetorical analysis of Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar’s BET Music Awards performance of “Freedom.” we explore how the venue, visual style, and lyrics symbolize the feelings of unity, frustration, resistance, resilience, struggle, and disposability embodied in the experiences of Black women enrolled at colleges and universities in the United States. Using Black feminist thought and intersectional …

Collaborative Engagement From Within The Academy: A Self-Reflexive Narrative, Danielle L. Lake
Collaborative Engagement From Within The Academy: A Self-Reflexive Narrative, Danielle L. Lake
eJournal of Public Affairs
This essay builds upon the current movement around publicly engaged scholarship, seeking to illuminate its challenges, risks, and rewards through a self-reflexive narrative. The author, as a community engaged scholar midway to tenure within the academy, attempts to situate herself within this larger milieu, uncover the assumptions under which she has operated, explore the impact of the publicly engaged work she has done, and clarify the impact she hopes this work has. The narrative extends recent discussions within the field, narrowing a gap in the service-learning and community engagement scholarship by drawing attention to the impact of collaborative engagement on …

Education Presentations at National and International Conferences
The population of the U.S. is becoming increasingly diverse in language and culture. And, the population of students in elementary and secondary schools is becoming more diverse, as well. Therefore, it is critical that pre-service teachers (PSTs) experience and understand other cultures. Teachers will need to become more inter-culturally competent (ICC). According to Hammer & Bennett (2010), ICC is "the capability to accurately understand and adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonality.” One way to do this is for PSTs to participate in Service Learning. According to the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse (NSLC), service learning is “a teaching and learning strategy …
