Digital Victim: Castellian Perspective On Education In Rural Indonesia, Rina Juwita, Silviana Purwanti, Ainun Nimatu Rohmah

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

Covid-19 has presented a new set of challenges in every area; higher education is one of them. The pandemic has resulted in a shift in teaching and learning communication methods, creating a new structure for digital-based education. This study investigates this phenomenon through the perspective of Castells’ Network Society Theory to see the relational capacity of education in rural Indonesia. In his view, Castells summarized a distinctive concept between the flow of time and space in a networked society. The current space deals specifically with the center of social organization today where places around the world have been connected in …

“You Sound Like A Good Program Manager”: An Analysis Of Gender In Women’S Computing Life Histories, Rose K. Pozos, Michelle Friend

Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Through the eyes of professional women in computing, we can better understand the impact of workplace structures, higher education pathways, and the particular closed nature of the tech industry. This study of women’s life histories contributes to the work of in-depth qualitative examinations of CS learning contexts and psychological studies investigating phenomena such stereotype threat which contextualize the experience of women in computing environments. Drawing inspiration from Margolis and Fisher’s work drawing the “blueprints” of the “boy’s clubhouse” of computing education [20], as well as McDermott and Webber’s analysis of when math learning occurs [22], we ask when, where, and …

A Qualitative Description Investigation Of U.S. Higher Education Quantitative Datasets, Mia Ocean, Karon T. Hicks Mar 2021

A Qualitative Description Investigation Of U.S. Higher Education Quantitative Datasets, Mia Ocean, Karon T. Hicks

The Qualitative Report

Currently, the U.S. system of higher education is almost exclusively evaluated by quantitative data based on traditional student trajectories and university structured programs. This could be problematic for community colleges and post-traditional students, who are a growing population at all institutions. Therefore, we conducted a pilot, qualitative description analysis of three U.S. quantitative national datasets to assess their accuracy and identify factors that influence classifications. We interviewed individuals (n=13) who would qualitatively be considered success stories, specifically individuals who attended community colleges during their undergraduate studies and ultimately high ranking graduate programs, to gather information about their educational timelines. In …

UAEU Law Journal

Higher education represents an essential need for society, enabling its comprehensive revival. Furthermore, money forms the foundation upon which people’s worldly lives are based, affirming the meaning of the Quranic verse: “Al Nisaa”:5. In fact, money only becomes worthwhile when it contributes to providing an education to its seekers, especially higher education as it the means of elevating the nation and lead it from darkness to enlightenment.

To achieve the noble goals of financing education and benefit all involved parties - the university, financial institute and the student - appropriate investment modes should exist. The researcher shows that the ijarah …

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

Supporting the academic advising needs of adult learners is paramount for colleges and universities. Research suggests that the faculty advisor's role is pivotal in students' academic progress. How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler Feb 2021

How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler

Education Doctorate Dissertations

A designer’s professional identity is constructed throughout a designer’s life and is developed through life experiences and education. While understanding the general importance of a professional identity is often clear to recent design graduates, developing it requires becoming self-aware of what traits constitutes designer professional identity (DPI). Kunrath, Cash and Yi-ling (2016) define DPI as the synthesis of personal attributes and design skills. However, the development of this full complement of DPI traits is often ignored and ill-supported in design education curriculum. A student’s DPI, if under-developed, can be a barrier to successfully transitioning from student to professional. Design educators …

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Community and connectedness are important concepts in online higher education. However, researchers debate how they are defined, operationalized, or enacted in practice. A scoping study was conducted to review the research literature on the extent, range, and nature of research in community and connectedness in online higher education. A total of 66 studies published from 2001 through 2018 were identified for review. The findings illustrate how research on community and connectedness has focused on areas such as course design, technology tools, faculty, and students as well as highlight the important role these concepts have played in the last two decades …

The concentration, Racial Justice and Education, is grounded in four pillars of knowledge, love, solidarity and justice. The concentration allows doctoral students to study critical race theory and critical Whiteness studies. In addition, students take two ethnic studies courses that focus on the educational experiences of different racial and ethnic groups, as well as relational histories and shared solidarities across groups. During multiple pandemics that disparately harm Black communities (including state-sanctioned violence against Black communities …

Packing: A Poem, Qazi M. Noor Feb 2021

Packing: A Poem, Qazi M. Noor

Journal of International Women's Studies

For the student planning to venture out of their home and set sail for higher studies, the busiest time of the year is in the Fall. University application season is hard, but it is harder still to pack one’s bags and leave everything familiar behind. The international student feels especially divided at a time like this: the excitement of experiencing something new and the feeling of bereavement while leaving their world behind. “Packing” speaks of the act of taking with one the things that are important, special, and worthwhile. Though it is virtually impossible to carry one’s whole world in …
