Determining The Impact Of Biographical And Situational Variables On The Leadership Styles And Effectiveness Of Community/Junior College Administrators, Steven W. Jones
Determining The Impact Of Biographical And Situational Variables On The Leadership Styles And Effectiveness Of Community/Junior College Administrators, Steven W. Jones
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Despite recently reported increases in the number of female administrators in higher education, the fact remains that men significantly outnumber women in senior level administrative positions in America’s community/ junior colleges. Employment pattern similar to those at Phillips County Community College (Arkansas), where no female has ever held a senior level administrative position, are common in higher education.
Criteria used to select individuals for administrative positions have led to an underutilization of females at the top levels of college management. Often central to these selection criteria are the assumptions that men and women manage differently, that men are better suited …

The Development Of A Model Plan For Support-Services Programs For Reentry Students In The California Community Colleges, Elizabeth Hansen Wright
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Large numbers of students who are 26 years of age or older, are enrolling in California community colleges to seek educational opportunities that will bring them job and coping skills, employment training, financial security, and emotional stability. These students, many of whom are between the ages of 26 and 49, may be classified as reentry students. The definition used in this study for a reentry student is a student 26 years of age or older who returns to or enters an institution of higher education after an absence of five or more years from a formal educational program.
The purpose …

Evaluating Art: Policies And Practices, Samuel L. Becker, Geprge Gunkel, Rebecca Arbogast, Lisette Sell
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article presents the results of a national survey that examined how colleges and universities evaluated artistic work produced by theatre faculty in promotion and tenure decisions. The study gathered responses from 304 institutions representing two year colleges, four year institutions, master’s level programs, and PhD granting universities. The authors document considerable variation in theatre curricula across institutional types and identify systematic differences in the availability of theatre degrees. The findings indicate that institutions lacked consistent procedures for assessing artistic work and rarely maintained written guidelines for evaluators. Many departments kept incomplete or irregular records of production evaluations, and the …

Analysis Of Teaching Evaluation Instruments Collected By Aca, Betty Jo Welch
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article analyzes twenty nine student evaluation instruments collected from seventy five higher education institutions in the United States and Canada in order to determine how teaching effectiveness is conceptualized and measured. The study identifies substantial variation in instrument design yet finds seven recurring dimensions: organization, student teacher interaction and rapport, classroom skill and lecturing ability, workload and course difficulty, grading and evaluation, personal satisfaction, and course content. Representative literature is reviewed to assess the strengths and limitations of evaluation approaches such as alumni surveys, self evaluation, student achievement measures, classroom visitation, and peer review. Research evidence indicates that well …
