Some Concerns In Implementing The New Education Requirements For Accounting Graduates, James A. Schweikart, Phillip A. Jones Sr. Jan 1989

Some Concerns In Implementing The New Education Requirements For Accounting Graduates, James A. Schweikart, Phillip A. Jones Sr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Graduates in accounting expecting to enter the profession of public accounting in the United States will soon be required to have five years of college education. While the education of accounting graduates may be enhanced, there are several repercussions of this requirement on colleges and universities as well as on the accounting profession in general. Some of these consequences may actually impair accounting education for those entering fields other than public accounting, as college and university resources will be unable to support the needs of all accounting fields.

The Ill Effects Of Mid - 1980s Tax Policy On Higher Education, J. Timothy Phillips, Robert A. Bullivant Jan 1989

The Ill Effects Of Mid - 1980s Tax Policy On Higher Education, J. Timothy Phillips, Robert A. Bullivant

Akron Tax Journal

This article will focus on the provisions of the 1984 and 1986 Acts that most directly affect higher education in an adverse way. While tax legislation in the early 1980s left higher education relatively unscathed, these two acts of the mid- 1980s had major detrimental effects on higher education.

This article will catalog and assess the impact on higher education of several tax law provisions enacted in the mid-1980s. It is the thesis of this article that the individual pieces of legislation are a de facto (and probably unwitting) educational policy that adversely affects higher education. This article will not …

A Delphi Study Of California Community College Counselors' Responsibilities And Competencies For The 1990'S As Perceived By Chief Student Services Administrators, Noelia Vela Edd

Dissertations

California's demographic changes and recent legislative reform mandates will impact what community college counselors will be expected to do in the 1990's. The purpose of this study was to identify the responsibilities and competencies of California community college counselors in light of the changes. The Delphi Method, selected for its consensus-building and forecasting qualities, was used for this study. A panel of 23 chief student services administrators, identified as experts in student services and counseling, completed three rounds of surveys. The Delphi instruments were developed to address counselor responsibilities and associated competencies for the 1990's, staff development needs of currently …

Significance Of Characteristic Psychological Indicators For Eating Disorders To Student Achievement Expectations And Student Success In Discrete University Student Populations, Susan L. Raab Jan 1989

Significance Of Characteristic Psychological Indicators For Eating Disorders To Student Achievement Expectations And Student Success In Discrete University Student Populations, Susan L. Raab

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Eating disorders are known to prevail in populations of college-aged women. Estimates of female university students who suffer from the disorder range from 4 to 20%, although cause and treatment are as yet controversial, deleterious effects have been documented. Selected psychological traits have commonly been found in individuals with eating disorders, affording an opportunity to profile these traits for potential dedication of effective individuals. Because these inventories are lengthy, time-consuming, and costly, the administration of these inventories is not feasible for large-scale screening. An alternative method of screening college students might be desirable.

The incidence of eating disorders have never …

The Economics Of Higher Education In Virginia, Phillip A. Jones, Clarence R. Jung Jr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This study is based primarily on financial data from colleges and universities in Virginia for the two academic years 1986-1987 and 1987-1988. The database stems from detailed data submitted by virtually all colleges and universities to the federal and state governments and reported in the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data survey (IPEDS). The data were accessed by Professor Jones from the State Council of Higher Education using the Bitnet computer program.

The aim of the study is to gain an understanding of the matrix of financial, economic and academic factors which determine the nature of a college or university; and to …

The Consequences Of Fas 93: Depreciation In Higher Education, Phillip A. Jones, Clarence R. Jung Jr.

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

The absence of depreciation accounting in the financial statements of colleges and universities is an issue of relevance to managerial accountants, both professionally and personally. It is of professional relevance not only because of the impact on the financial statements but also because of the impact this has had on management and accounting practices in higher education. It is of personal relevance because of the impact that the adoption of depreciation accounting will have on the cost of higher education to managerial accountants and their families. The convergence of the results of our study of colleges and universities in Virginia, …

Development And Implementation Of A Faculty Evaluation System For Clinical Nursing, Mary M. Reeve Jan 1989

Development And Implementation Of A Faculty Evaluation System For Clinical Nursing, Mary M. Reeve

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Evaluation of teacher effectiveness is a major issue in higher education today. Many external forces contribute to the urgency with which institutions of higher learning attempt to evaluate teachers. These forces include inflation, decreased resources, fewer students that results in a need for fewer faculty, and accountability. In addition, faculty are demanding codified policies and procedures so that they have a standard by which they can protect themselves in negotiations for promotion or merit increases and in courts of law if a dispute arises over promotion or academic decisions. Faculty can also use evaluation results for the improvement of teacher …

Star: A Computerized Tutorial In General Psychology, Barbara S. Chaparro, Charles G. Halcomb

Publications

This study investigated the use of a computerized tutorial--Self-Test and Review (STAR)--in a computer-managed general psychology course. STAR consists of four major modules which provide the student with a variety of learning exercises, including practice quizzes, practice final exams, performance reviews, and structured study questions. The purpose of the study was to determine whether students would choose STAR as a study tool, the effect of lecture versus self-paced settings on the use of STAR, whether students who used STAR would perform better than those who did not, and the effect of the timing of feedback in STAR on performance. Students …

The Labyrinth Of Challenge To Change: An Analysis Of Community College Leaders' Thinking Styles And Behavioral Practices In The Current Environment, Mary Elizabeth Scott Edd Jan 1989

The Labyrinth Of Challenge To Change: An Analysis Of Community College Leaders' Thinking Styles And Behavioral Practices In The Current Environment, Mary Elizabeth Scott Edd

Dissertations

The present research addressed a concern of both urgent and profound dimensions in the modern world: the current and compelling need for a radically different kind of leadership to meet the challenge of turbulent change. This need has been crystallized by a new and emerging paradigm shift which at once reflects, confronts and shapes the realities experienced today. This study sought to set in relief the current thinking styles of nominated California community college leaders and to see if and how these correlated with their leadership behavioral practices. The Human Information Processing Survey (HIPS) and the Leadership Practices Inventory-Self (LPI-S) …

The Effect Of Art Education On Self-Concept Of Disabled Adult Students In A Community College Setting, James Joseph Harrington Edd Jan 1989

The Effect Of Art Education On Self-Concept Of Disabled Adult Students In A Community College Setting, James Joseph Harrington Edd

Dissertations

This study examined the effect of art education on self-concept of disabled adult students in a community college setting. An experimental, pretest-posttest, control group design was utilized to carry out the study. The treatment provided was a college art class involving painting, clay sculpturing, and drawing. The null hypothesis tested was that art education has no effect on self-concept in disabled adult students. The alternative hypothesis was that art education improves self-concept in disabled adult students. A non-replacement random sample of 30 participants from a population of 250 disabled adult volunteers was selected and divided into an experimental and a …
