Popular music programs continue to expand into higher education in the United States. By examining the who, what, when, where, how, and why of existing higher education popular music programs, information for future development and assessment can be provided. This qualitative multiple case study explored the creation, implementation and operation of two popular music performance programs in higher education in the United States: The Musicianship, Artistry Development and Entrepreneurship (MADE) Music Program at The University of Miami, Frost School of Music, and the Bachelor of Popular Music Program at The University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music. The case study presented here is different from others that have been written in that it measures the number of courses offered, student registrations, and professional developments available to local residents. The data was collected and triangulated using different methods, such as structured interviews, archival records, newspaper articles, University websites, and participant-observations. The study included colleges and universities with either main campuses or satellite locations in Southwest Virginia and …

The Unheard Voices: A Critical Look At Black Women, Voice And Education, Ariel E. Seay
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2017), Black women are among the most educated women in the United States. However, these dominant narratives about the educational achievements of Black women could be considered “rosy portrayals”. The purpose of this study is to understand, locate, and acknowledge the experiences and conditions of African American women in higher educational institutions through a thematic analysis and a curated Twitter chat. Dolores Delgado Bernal’s (1998) concept of “cultural intuition” was used to build a framework. The following research questions are addressed: What methods are useful for understanding the collective experiences of Black …

Using Blended Learning To Enhance The Experience Of Students In Built Environment Related Degree Programs, Ruari Hayden, Philip Russell
Using Blended Learning To Enhance The Experience Of Students In Built Environment Related Degree Programs, Ruari Hayden, Philip Russell
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Blended learning was introduced into the Construction Management programme in the School of Surveying and Construction Management at the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2016. The module has traditionally been delivered by face-to-face teaching but online delivery has been facilitated using the Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) which has enabled a more blended approach to academic instruction. This innovative change to module provision has also provided an opportunity to enhance the student learning experience within the School through a more flexible teaching and learning environment.
In this paper, the design, development and implementation of blended learning into a Construction Technology module …

Why Black Lives (Must) Matter At Uk, Nicole Martin
Why Black Lives (Must) Matter At Uk, Nicole Martin
Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning
As a university committed to creating inclusive learning environments, we must remember that our pedagogical practices and philosophies are not crafted in insolation from our social, political, and cultural environments. The psychic and emotional injury spurred by the events of the summer of 2016 will continue to reverberate across campus as we move into the fall semester. When we boldly address the lingering effects of trauma through our pedagogical practices, we demonstrate how the campus actively creates space for the civic development of students, staff, faculty, and administration.

The War On Higher Education Is Now Underway., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
The War On Higher Education Is Now Underway., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
In 1969, President Richard Nixon formally declared
a “war on drugs” that would be directed to combat the
use of illicit drugs in the U.S. This and other “wars,”
such as the “war on gangs” or “war on cancer” have
come to signify major efforts by the federal government
against something they perceive as a threat.
In past articles in this column I have written about
concerted efforts by some groups and conservative
media to diminish funding for higher education, defame
college education as a passport to better standards
of living, portray colleges and universities as “liberal
nests” out of …

Effective Teaching And Learning In Higher Education: A United Kingdom Perspective, Pat O'Connor
Effective Teaching And Learning In Higher Education: A United Kingdom Perspective, Pat O'Connor
The ITB Journal
This paper explores the current teaching and learning environment in higher education in the UK, concentrating on England. We ask: Is there a positive and supportive environment for learning and teaching in the UK? The conceptual and theoretical foundations underpinning practice in higher education teaching and learning are examined as is the support and impetus provided by government and policy. The nature of academic identities and the structure and engagement in academic development is also assessed. We pose a series of important questions within this paper, of significance to the Irish Higher Education sector.
