Differences And Similarities Between U.S. And Non-U.S. Citizens In Graduate School Perceptions, Experiences And Career Preparation, Fred Cline

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

International students account for a significant percentage of enrollees in graduate programs in the United States. Nearly 30% of the doctoral degrees awarded in the U.S. go to non-U.S. citizens, and about two-thirds remain in the U.S. for their career. This study compares survey results from 1,000 international and 4,200 U.S. respondents on their beliefs about the value of a graduate degree, the quality and sources of information they received about graduate school and careers, and their job satisfaction after completing their degree. Findings suggest that international students need additional support and information when considering careers related to graduate degrees.

Difficult Dialogues (2006-2013)

Difficult Dialogues course offerings for the Fall 2013 semester. While each semester's Difficult Dialogues programming centered around a theme, the initiative's course offerings covered a broader range of topic approaching the process of dialogues in a variety of ways and across a number of disciplines.

Clark University's Difficult Dialogues initiative was launched in 2006 and ran through 2013. The initiative aimed to raise awareness and develop skills of dialogue as a distinct approach to discourse, as well as encourage its practice among faculty, staff, and students.

Not A Hearing Loss, A Deaf Gain: Power, Self-Naming, And The Deaf Community, David J. Thomas

Self-naming has long stood as the primary assertion of power for disenfranchised communities in the western world. While person first language (e.g. person who is deaf) has been the preferred language of disability and disability services for the last 20 years, members of the Deaf community have asserted their cultural capital, and indeed, their Deafhood, or defining the experience of being ‘deaf in the world’, through the power of self-naming. This research examines attitudes toward language, self-naming, and disability in the Deaf community and seeks to move toward a more attentive, sensitive, and responsive language policy in the academy.

The integration of sustainability into higher education academic programs is occurring at an accelerated pace in response to international and national imperatives to rethink the way it serves the needs of society. Three case studies from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, Northern Arizona University, and Kean University (NJ) outlines the academic structure, program, resources, the motivation and mechanisms for curricular change, key sustainability-learning outcomes and program goals, curricular changes, and assessment strategies these institutions used to integrate sustainability into their undergraduate curriculum. International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Boyer’s model of four scholarships as an integrated system engaging and integrating the scholarships of discovery, integration, application, and teaching is being increasingly adopted both by individual scholars and institutions. Here I reflect on my own adoption of this approach almost a decade ago, and I describe one application, its use in defining my professional academic profile. While this does not directly address issues of pedagogy, it provides a sound basis for improved pedagogical practice in higher education. The words “knowledge” and “information” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the connection between them is complex and problematic. Knowledge is a mental product gained from engaging with information. All educational subjects, scholarly disciplines, occupations, and activities produce knowledge as well as information. Because libraries encompass potentially all subjects, professional vision in librarianship would benefit from an examination of knowledge that transcends the methods and topical concerns of individual disciplines. An interdisciplinary (or transdisciplinary) framework in which to view knowledge was pioneered in the post-Sputnik age by Fritz Machlup and Michael Polanyi. Through the voices and experiences of LGBTQ+ students on three campuses, this study provides evidence of the essential value of LGBT Centers as they advocate for and empower LGBTQ+ students. Grounded in theories of college student development, identity development, and Queer theory, the qualitative study draws on 35 semi-structured interviews with students and staff involved with LGBT Centers on three campuses that broadly reflect the diversity of higher education in the United States.
