Collected Faculty Scholarship

We offered undergraduate students an interdisciplinary course Patterns of Life that develops mathematical reasoning strategies to solve complex problems. In its most essential form, mathematics is the study of patterns; and mathematical (patterned) reasoning is the ability to think with a plan and a purpose. Students personally experience and use patterns of reasoning in diverse disciplines, and then work in groups to form a valid strategy for solving a selected problem. Patterns of Life is designed as guided, on-site, active-learning experiences, in cooperation with local scientific, cultural and fine arts communities. Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of Assessment Plans In The Improvement And Sustainment Phase In Colleges And Universities, Christopher A. Mccullough

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Assessment in higher education has become increasingly important throughout the past 20 years. Institutions of higher education engage in student outcomes assessment for a plethora of purposes.;The researcher conducted this study to investigate current assessment practices at the undergraduate program level. The researcher determined the effectiveness of assessment plans within specific disciplines at institutions that have implemented and sustained their assessment plans. The researcher also identified the degree to which related institutional commitments and resources were provided to support assessment the assessment process. Faculty satisfaction with the assessment plan was also examined.

In Fall 2004, the Chair of the Department of Communication and Fine Arts was charged with customizing the TROY University Orientation course (TROY 1101) curriculum and activities for the Montgomery Campus student population. After talking with the Montgomery Campus library director about the need for including a comprehensive library component, the Chair began working with two librarians to create a library orientation component for TROY 1101, a one-semester hour course that would be required for all new and transfer students effective Fall Semester 2005.

In California community colleges, fewer than half of students who enroll in basic algebra courses finish with a grade of C or better. Such a low success rate creates an intense demand on institutional resources, including faculty efforts, tutorial services, classroom availability, and financial aid. Furthermore, students who do poorly in algebra also tend to struggle in other quantitative courses. While research suggests that child algebra learners tend to exhibit specific misconceptions, not much is known about misconceptions held by adult algebra learners. Research does indicate, however, that certain general learning characteristics are common among adult learners. The present study …

This study explores how faculty in the social sciences experience and respond to academic capitalism. Academic capitalism is about market and market-like activity at the university and professorial efforts to secure external money. This research expands existing literature which has focused on the hard or natural sciences, and other areas more closely aligned with the market.

Thirty-seven qualitative research interviews were conducted between March and July of 2006 with professors of sociology, criminology, economics at the University of Florida, Florida State University, and the University of South Florida. A broadly diverse faculty is critical to MIT’s educational mission, and significant efforts have been made to achieve a faculty whose diversity reflects that of the students we train. To assess the success of some of these efforts, I examined the percentage of women faculty in the Schools of Science and Engineering over time. This article examines possible reasons why women are still not making it to the top in the hard sciences in academia. It considers two major difficulties that women face. The first concerns the psychological nature of women, which is alleged to be unsuited to the competitive and aggressive mindset considered necessary for scientific achievement. The second concerns the childbearing and child-nurturing roles of women, which make it difficult for them to conform to the intense, time-consuming demands of an academic career in science. Women are now the majority of students in institutions of higher education in the United States, and in many ways women as students and faculty have seen significant progress. But numbers do not tell the whole story. Subtle forms of discrimination continue to exist, and the higher up the pyramid you go, the fewer women are to be found, whether among tenured faculty, as presidents and provosts or as board members and board chairs. Nearly all colleges and universities are using some form of e-learning system, usually an expensive course management system (CMS), to create online course offerings or to enhance regular, classroom-oriented courses.
