George Yancey, a professor of sociology at the University of North Texas, has focused his research on racial and ethnic bias. His recent books include Interracial Families: Current Concepts and Controversies and Interracial Contact and Social Change. Yancey's newest study in Compromising Scholarship documents the bias of university faculty against members of various groups. Professor Yancey, aware that scientists, just like other Americans, are hesitant to reveal any prejudice or bias, focused his study on "collegiality" in an attempt to distract respondents from the research interest in bias. Research in undergraduate statistics education often centers on the introductory course required for a large percentage of college students. While acknowledging the diverse setting, audience, and purpose of introductory courses, existing research assumes that courses offered by different disciplines share the same goals and teaching practices. The purpose of this study is to examine the objectives for student outcomes and pedagogical delivery of introductory statistics courses in various academic departments to provide explicit evidence for this assumption. The American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) are meant to apply to all introductory courses. The College …

Student Opinions And Preferences Regarding Personal Response Systems In The Graduate Physical Therapy Classroom: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry, Andi Beth Mincer, Anne W. Thompson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Little investigation has been conducted on the use of Personal Response Systems (PRS) in either graduate-level courses or health professions education. Through anonymous participation in focus groups, graduate physical therapy students described specific aspects of PRS that they felt facilitated their learning, as well as aspects that hindered their learning. A Likert-type survey was constructed based on focus group outcomes and was offered to the entire population of physical therapy students at our institution. Results indicated that PRS was perceived to be useful for examination preparation, application of concepts, facilitation of discussion, and immediate feedback. The Impact Of Educational Programs And Support Structures On Success In The Classroom For College Students With Learning Disabilities, Kendra Wynne Scott

This research explores and examines 1) the effectiveness of university sponsored educational strategies (formal and informal) for students with learning disabilities and 2) how individuals react to and manage their learning disability. This study is a mixed- methods design and uses surveys and interviews to collect data. Participants are college students registered with the Office of Disability Services (ODS) for academic assistance at a four-year liberal Southeastern mid-sized university. Results showed that when students’ utilized university sponsored educational strategies, such as assistive technology, note-taking skills, and other accommodations their self-efficacy and confidence increased in relation to personal classroom achievements. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to better understand how female mechanical engineering faculty members' career experiences in academia affect their satisfaction. Specifically, the research considered differences in satisfaction reported by female and male mechanical engineering faculty members in terms of: a) departmental climate, b) nature of work, c) resource allocations, d) departmental policies/practices, and e) overall satisfaction. The study compared the levels of satisfaction reported in survey data collected from 2005-2010 with interview data collected from a subset of the survey population. Since the mid-twentieth century, a shift in demographics of those attending higher education institutions has resulted in increased attention to underrepresented students and their development, specifically their social identities, including race (Cross, 1991), gender (Gilligan, 1982), and sexual orientation (Cass, 1979; D'Augelli, 1994; Fassinger, 1998). However, many theories have compartmentalized aspects of one's overall identity with little understanding of how one's social identity may influence the development of other identities. The probability that students will make a successful transition from high school to college is linked to the degree to which their secondary educational experiences have prepared them for the expectations and demands they will encounter in college. National findings provide continuing evidence that focusing on improving student achievement in mathematics will positively impact college readiness. This study examined the role of critical thinking in regards to environmental ethical issues. First, an instrument was developed and validated to quantitatively measure students’ ability to apply critical thinking skills to various environmental ethical issues. Next, the instrument and a qualitative assessment were used to examine critical thinking capabilities of freshmen upon entry to a large introductory course. Last, the Environmental Ethics Critical Thinking Assessment, in conjunction with the qualitative assessment, were used to examine the change in critical thinking ability of all students in a large introductory course from pre to post-semester. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore higher education faculty and staff perspectives on sustainability initiatives within their respective institutions. Subjects of this study were faculty and staff members from three rural two year institutions of higher education in Arkansas. Data was gathered using an electronically delivered survey instrument. In this project I examine the ability of undergraduate students to articulate a working definition of culture and cross-culture. The students were predominately elementary education majors, enrolled in one of two culture-based elective courses at the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the 2010-2011 school year. Through the use of semi-structured interviewing and participatory/observational autoethnographic fieldwork, I provide several viewpoints from which to look at this complex issue.
