LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: In one of his Proverbs of Hell, the late-Enlightenment poet William Blake shows the devil recommending that we “Bring out number weight and measure in a year of dearth.” Blake’s advice, uttered by the Provost of Perdition, throws a bituminous light on our contemporary preoccupation with assessment. Academic people everywhere not only labor under, but amicably collaborate in the production of statistics, measurements, evaluations, “metrics,” and a menagerie of purportedly informative numbers. We have arithmetical estimates of everything—except assessment itself. The absence of evidence for the efficacy of assessment is, if not overwhelming, at least imposing. Faculty …

Minority Female Students And Graduates Perceived Value Of Their For-Profit College & University (Fpcu) Technical Education, Rashanda Rachelle Booker Jan 2015

Minority Female Students And Graduates Perceived Value Of Their For-Profit College & University (Fpcu) Technical Education, Rashanda Rachelle Booker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The higher education institutions of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCU) have been sources of much controversy the last few decades. Research on their inception, quality of education, government funding and their threat to the traditional educational models of higher education provides a wealth of knowledge regarding FPCU’s demographics and explains what they are, who they serve, how the function, and how they make money. This relevant and rich data explains the phenomena of FPCU’s and how they are integral tools within higher education. However, research is limited on why the population that they serve chooses to attend them. Current data …

Human Kaleidoscopes: Cultivating Success In Non-Traditional Students, Carolyn Coles Benton Jan 2015

Human Kaleidoscopes: Cultivating Success In Non-Traditional Students, Carolyn Coles Benton

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Non-traditional students are a growing population in higher education, yet our understandings of the unique factors that predict their success have not increased. This narrative inquiry examines the lived experiences of high school dropouts entering the college arena as non-traditional students, attempting to improve their personal and academic lifestyles by acquiring a General Education Diploma (GED) in addition to obtaining an associate’s degree from a for-profit postsecondary educational institution. The purpose of this study is to better understand the lives and circumstances of students, leading up to their dropping out of high school. Participants’ reflections of their own college experiences, …

From With–In The Black Diamond: The Intersections Of Masculinity, Ethnicity, And Identity–An Epistolary Autoethnographic Exploration Into The Lived Experiences Of A Black Male Graduate Student, Vincent Tarrell Harris

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

From With-In The Black Diamond: (Black Diamond) autoethnographically explores the lived experiences of a Black male who navigates his way through a predominately white higher education institutions while existing within marginalized spaces related to his gender, ethnicity, and identity. Black Diamond uses epistolary writing techniques to explore question research question: 1. How has a Black Gay male graduate student studying Higher Education negotiated his way to and through predominately white higher education institutions? In order to support the answering of this question I will argue that the most influential reasons higher education literature rarely addresses controversial topics related to GLBTQ …

This investigative project explores the abuses of for-profit colleges in New York City in the context of what federal, state and city bodies have done to regulate these schools. We focused on two for-profits in the city, ASA College and TCI College, whose practices typify the criticisms of for-profit schools: targeting low-income people of color, funding the school from mostly federal student loans and issuing pricey degrees that yield few field-specific jobs.

Faculty Senate Newsletter, Holiday 2014, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College

LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: Christmas, as it was called before it became a generic all-purpose “holiday,” is, at least in the propaganda of western cultures, all about universality: about the day when, so it seemed, the whole world lay at rest, when benefactions went out, if not to all mankind, at least to those on Santa’s good-person list. Christmas, indeed most any winter holiday, depends on the mass distribution of information: on everyone learning (a) that this is the day to keep calm and (b) what it is—what is the cultural and philosophical context—for at least a temporary peace. Everybody’s favorite …

University Peer Advisors Pursuing Careers In Educational Advising: A Phenomenological Study Examining The Influence Of Lived-Experiences On Vocational Purpose, Laurie Simpson Nov 2014

University Peer Advisors Pursuing Careers In Educational Advising: A Phenomenological Study Examining The Influence Of Lived-Experiences On Vocational Purpose, Laurie Simpson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Many studies have considered the impact college peer advising programs have on advisees, however, formal literature examining the lived-experience peer advising placements have on student advisors is limited. Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, this study seeks to examine the lived-experiences of former peer advisors in an advising center at a four-year university in Massachusetts. The goal of the research is to determine whether there are common themes in the lived-experiences of participant peer advisors. Additionally, employing Chickering's psychosocial theory of student development, this researcher seeks to discover how those lived-experiences may have contributed to participants' development of vocational purpose. …

Making It Work: Factors That Influence The Success Of Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Rebecca Calwell Jan 2014

Making It Work: Factors That Influence The Success Of Programs At Rural Community Colleges, Rebecca Calwell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Community colleges are expected to contribute to economic development efforts by implementing new programs that respond to the needs of business and industry. Program development is complex, especially for community colleges in rural areas where business and industry are scarce. This qualitative study explores the factors that influence successful occupational programs at rural community colleges. Participants included administrators, faculty members, and students associated with three rural community colleges in West Virginia, as well as one state-level administrator and a former community college president. This study indicates the importance of five factors that influence the success of occupational programs: demand for …

Neoliberalism And Public University Agendas: Tensions Along The Global/Local Divide, Peter Wanyenya, Donna Lester-Smith Jan 2014

Neoliberalism And Public University Agendas: Tensions Along The Global/Local Divide, Peter Wanyenya, Donna Lester-Smith

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Over the last decade, internationalization efforts have accelerated at leading postsecondary institutions in North America and elsewhere, with universities now aggressively competing for the most talented students worldwide. With the focus on recruiting international students, one of the major attendant objectives has seemingly been a social-justice-oriented agenda on tackling pressing global issues; the local has indeed become the global. However, not everyone is ostensibly benefiting from this new global focus. For some, their local issues and conditions are increasingly precarious and nonprioritized in institutional and broadening neoliberal governmental agendas. In the Canadian context, various Indigenous and low-income racialized communities, youth …

Queer Desires And Critical Pedagogies In Higher Education: Reflections On The Transformative Potential Of Non-Normative Learning Desires In The Classroom, Jennifer Fraser, Sarah Lamble Jan 2014

Queer Desires And Critical Pedagogies In Higher Education: Reflections On The Transformative Potential Of Non-Normative Learning Desires In The Classroom, Jennifer Fraser, Sarah Lamble

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This article considers what a queer approach might offer in addressing some of the challenges of higher education in the contemporary neoliberal landscape. Despite a rich literature on queer issues in the classroom, most of the existing scholarship has focused on engaging queer students, being a queer teacher, or teaching queer content in the curriculum. Very little work has focused on what it means to take a queer approach to pedagogic techniques or how such an approach might impact educational practices more broadly. We ask: What does it mean in theory and practice to “queer” our teaching methods? What role …

Student Conduct, Restorative Justice, And Student Development: Findings From The Starr Project (Student Accountability And Restorative Research Project), David R. Karp Phd, Casey Sacks Jan 2014

Student Conduct, Restorative Justice, And Student Development: Findings From The Starr Project (Student Accountability And Restorative Research Project), David R. Karp Phd, Casey Sacks

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The STudent Accountability and Restorative Research (STARR) Project is a multi-campus study of college student disciplinary practices in the United States, comparing traditional conduct hearings that use restorative justice practices with traditional college student misconduct hearings. This study provides a coherent set of learning goals in college student conduct administration and a robust data set capable of measuring student learning across different types of disciplinary practice, in particular, comparing traditional “model code” practice with emerging restorative justice processes. Integrating several student development theories, we identify six student development goals: just community/self authorship, active accountability, interpersonal competence, social ties to institution, …
