Marianist Educational Associates: Advancing And Promoting The Mission Of Catholic And Marianist Universities, Corinne Brion, Allison Leigh Dec 2021

Marianist Educational Associates: Advancing And Promoting The Mission Of Catholic And Marianist Universities, Corinne Brion, Allison Leigh

Journal of Catholic Education

Preparing employees to become stewards of the Marianist values and charisms has become a priority at a Marianist institution because employees impact the institution’s environment and faculty and staff directly impact student learning. To date, there is a lack of research conducted among employees of a Marianist institution on how new understandings of institutional mission get transferred to their jobs. Additionally, there is a lack of empirical studies that examine what enhances and hinders the transfer of such understanding. Using the Multidimensional Model of Learning Transfer as a theoretical framework, the purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the …

Video Communication: Explorations Of Community And Connectedness, And Closeness In Online Courses, Eric S. Belt Dec 2021

Video Communication: Explorations Of Community And Connectedness, And Closeness In Online Courses, Eric S. Belt

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Educators and students are using synchronous and asynchronous video communication technologies in unprecedented ways given the ongoing global pandemic. Despite continued educational research on video communication technology, less is known about the social implications of these forms of communication. Online learning has faced challenges (e.g., learner isolation, technological competency, and time management) since its inception; these challenges have been exacerbated in the rapid transition to emergency remote teaching. Given problems like these, additional research is needed to better understand how video communication technology can be used to improve communication and interaction in online learning. The following dissertation presents a series …

The Challenges Faced By University Educators In Singapore When Referring Students To Counsellors: An Instrumental Case Study, Poh Yaip, Steven Ng, Yee Lin Chung

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study examines the difficulties faced by two university professors working in a public, autonomous university in Singapore, when referring students to counselling services. Educators typically observe how students interact and behave in class, and may refer students to counselling services. However, there is little research into how educators experience and view this role, particularly in higher education in Asia. Two university professors who had referred students to their university’s counselling centre took part in semi-structured interviews for the study. From these interviews, the study revealed educators can face a range of challenges in their referral role, such as lack …

Applying Concepts Of Cultural Humility In Csd Education, Sarah M. Ginsberg, Bernadette Mayfield-Clarke

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Cultural humility represents a set of concepts that extend the core notion of cultural competence required for licensed professionals in audiology and speech-language pathology (ASHA, n.d.). A cultural humility mindset includes self-evaluation, addressing power imbalances, and fostering productive partnerships (Tervalon & Murray-Garcia, 1998). This paper examines each of these aspects of cultural humility and discusses possible ways to apply them in communicative sciences and disorders education.

Preparing Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students To Work With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Populations: A Program Design And Student Outcomes Study, Alliete R. Alfano, Angela M. Medina, Stefanie Moore

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Adequate service provision for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) clients has been an issue the field of speech-language pathology (SLP) has been grappling with. At the root of this issue is a lack of professional CLD training in SLP programs and a lack of diversity among the students enrolled in these programs. The current study described the MS-SLP bilingual emphasis curriculum and recruitment practices at Florida International University (FIU). Outcomes for the MS-SLP graduates were also explored. The FIU MS-SLP program entails three dedicated courses on bilingual clientele with communication disorders across the lifespan, infusion of CLD concepts across all …

Higher Education's Contributions To The U.S. Democratic Society, Robert L. Williams, Charaya C. Upton Sep 2021

Higher Education's Contributions To The U.S. Democratic Society, Robert L. Williams, Charaya C. Upton

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

College experiences can contribute to teaching, learning, and instruction within higher education. The framework for this essay treats the college community as prototypic of the U.S. political society. Several aspects of the national political culture have been approximated within a collegiate culture. For example, every political problem within our society can be represented in a miniature fashion within a program of studies in a university. Much of students’ political information can come from the interaction between teachers and students. However, a sizable portion of this learned information can extend through interaction among students. At that point, teachers would point students …

The Multiracial Student Experience With College Counselor Support, Asianna Harris

Great Plains Graduate Review

This narrative study presents the lived and told stories of multiracial college students with specific consideration for how they perceive the support they receive from college counselors and why they are sometimes hesitant to go to college counselors. The intention is to assist LPCs working in the college setting to become multiracially orientated. Critical Race Theory is used as a lens to understand racial microaggressions and make meaning of the inequalities that can stand as barriers to multiracial student success and social, emotional, and academic support. Individual interviews with five students affirm the presence of patterns and barriers within the …

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact worldwide, affecting 600 million students in higher education institutions across 200 countries. However, comparative studies by country on this topic are limited. In this paper, we explore the question: how has the COVID-19 pandemic affected higher education students and which ones have been impacted the most? Indonesia and Vietnam are our focus. We leveraged a rich set of data collected online from college/university students from both countries involving over 2600 participants, and used regression analyses to measure the students' outcomes, including the dimensions of their wellbeing, financial hardships, access to technology, and …

Different Strokes: A Critical Race Discourse Analysis Of The Experiences Of Four Black Women Rowing For A Predominantly White Institution (Pwi), Carol Schoenecker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Collegiate athletics has the remarkable ability to serve as a catalyst for positive and widespread social change and identity formation. For Black women, the formation of identity comes with the added intersections of race and gender in addition to sport. Collegiate rowing is one of the most heavily scholarshipped sports coming out of the passing of Title IX legislation in 1972 and requires no previous rowing experience for participation (Garran, 2012). Despite the opportunity for rowing to serve as an access point for innumerable young athletes to obtain financial and social support through a pathway to higher education, there remains …

Video Use In Online And Blended Courses: A Qualitative Synthesis, Eric S. Belt, Patrick R. Lowenthal

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of video has become commonplace in education today. Educators are engaging students with video communication technology more frequently than ever before, given COVID-19. However, questions remain on how instructors use video as a communication and teaching tool in online and blended courses. The purpose of this literature review was to synthesize research on the use of video as a teaching tool in online and blended courses. A systematic approach was used to identify 64 peer-reviewed studies published from 2010 to 2020. A qualitative synthesis of the studies resulted in four themes: delivering video lectures, fostering discussions with video, …

Perceptions Of Resilience-Informed Education In Postsecondary Instructors, Chelsea L. Robertson Aug 2021

Perceptions Of Resilience-Informed Education In Postsecondary Instructors, Chelsea L. Robertson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have noted the detrimental impact adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can have on individuals’ developmental trajectories and, as a result, the utilization of trauma-informed practices has been of increasing interest within the field of education. Most research on trauma-informed pedagogy is derived from samples of children in grades K-12, whereas research on trauma-informed teaching practices within higher education is comparatively scarce. The specific aims of the current investigation are two-fold. The first aim is to explore the effect of postsecondary instructors’ disciplinary specialization (i.e., person-thing orientation) on their receptivity to compassionate teaching practices. The second aim is to implement …

Integrating Empathy Pedagogy With Feminist Thought And Social Justice Praxis, Ashlyn Elizabeth Brown Jul 2021

Integrating Empathy Pedagogy With Feminist Thought And Social Justice Praxis, Ashlyn Elizabeth Brown

Institute for the Humanities Theses

This thesis outlines the need for empathy pedagogy in higher education. It will examine how empathy pedagogy can be integrated with feminist thought and social justice praxis. I argue that when we integrate empathy pedagogy with feminist thought and social justice, we are building the capacity for students to understand others’ lives in oppression. Furthermore, an integrated modality of teaching empathy will allow students to foster the traits of empathy within themselves; students are then better able to act as agents of social change by utilizing the traits of empathy to actively listen, self-reflect, and mindfully engage with other lived …

Sustainability Of Community Engagement At Institutions Of Higher Education: A Look At Compassion Fatigue And The College Student Mental Health Crisis, Katherine A. Chiu, Briana G. Craig, Naomi L. Rabago Jun 2021

Sustainability Of Community Engagement At Institutions Of Higher Education: A Look At Compassion Fatigue And The College Student Mental Health Crisis, Katherine A. Chiu, Briana G. Craig, Naomi L. Rabago

VA Engage Journal

This study investigated one of the many factors contributing to the sustainability of community engagement efforts at institutions of higher education. Extensive literature shows that burnout and compassion fatigue disproportionately affect those in caring roles and helping professions. Moreover, studies have found significant correlations between levels of burnout and compassion fatigue and the likelihood of human error, which directly affects the safety and long-term outcomes of people within their care. However, there is still limited exploration of how these phenomena may manifest, and similarly, cause unintentional harm to vulnerable populations, in the context of student community engagement efforts. This paper …

Quick Tips For Teaching Students How To Reflect, Jennifer Dobbs-Oates May 2021

Quick Tips For Teaching Students How To Reflect, Jennifer Dobbs-Oates

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

When you ask your students to reflect, do they know what you mean? Do you tell them “go deeper; give me more,” but see blank faces in response? This was my experience when I first began to use reflection-based assignments. It took me some time to realize that I couldn’t assume my students knew how to reflect in the way I meant. I needed to teach my students directly about the skill of reflection. Here, I share quick tips for helping students understand what reflection is, why we require it, and how to do it well.

An Exploratory Descriptive Study Of The Bridge Scholars Program At A Private, Faith-Based University, Susan Lewis King May 2021

An Exploratory Descriptive Study Of The Bridge Scholars Program At A Private, Faith-Based University, Susan Lewis King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An exploratory descriptive study was completed regarding the Bridge Scholars program in a private, faith-based university setting. The program was described as bridge because it was created to be a flexible consideration in the student admissions process, as the required metrics for admittance were modified for students that would not have otherwise been admitted to the university. Admitted provisionally, these students had to earn a 2.5 GPA or above before they were considered fully assimilated students. This admissions exception has been in place since 2016, when the program was initiated.

Three student cohorts were analyzed with particular emphasis on academic …
