Undocumented Students In Higher Education: A Case Study Exploring Street-Level Bureaucracy In Academic Advising, Fai Howard
Theses and Dissertations
Immigration is arguably among the most divisive global and national issues at present. In the U.S., undocumented persons (the DREAMers) who arrived to the U.S. as children have been the central focus of legislation and debate. As of 2013, the undocumented population has increased from less than a million in 1980, then reaching 12.2 million in 2006, to an estimated population of 11.3 million (Passel, Cohn, Krogstand, & Gonzalez-Barerra, 2014) just a few short years ago. For the numerous undocumented students who have excelled academically and socially, and make positive contributions to their communities, the goal of obtaining a college …

Evaluating The Special Needs Doctrine In The Context Of Higher Education, Ryan Prsha
Missouri Law Review
Part II of this Note discusses the legal context in which this issue must be framed and gives a brief history of how the courts have handled public school drug-testing policies to this point. Part III examines the current state of drug testing in the academic setting – specifically focusing on the ongoing legal situation at Linn State. Part IV delves into questions concerning the Eighth Circuit’s current treatment of the Linn State situation, as well as the potential approaches that the judiciary could take in future cases.

One could argue that universities originated
from places like the Library of Alexandria, established
23 centuries ago in Egypt. Libraries like
the one in Alexandria attracted the most talented
intellectuals.
They contained not only a large number of
papyrus scrolls but also served as botanical gardens,
collections of art and places of residence
for scholars.
When modern universities were built, libraries
occupied a distinctive place where students and
faculty went on an almost daily basis to seek the
information they needed for their studies. But
over the last few decades their role has transformed
and lessened. One reason for this …

What Democrats Have Planned For Higher Education., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

The Democrats have made a number of concrete
promises regarding higher education if they win
the presidential elections. They promise concerted
actions against sexual assaults on campuses that
include comprehensive support for survivors, fair
judicial processes that prevent the use of cultural
biases against females as “inciters,” and increased
prevention efforts through education programs.
The Clinton campaign also promises support for
net neutrality, the idea that Internet service providers
should enable access to all content and applications
regardless of the source without favoring or blocking
particular products or websites. The Democratic plan
also proposes expanding availability of fiber-optic
broadband Internet …

Last week we reported that when it comes to
higher education, the Republican platform for this
election was a single paragraph with no real details
of what they propose to do for the next four years.
Given that, the only thing we can do to discern what
their policies will be for the sector is to analyze their
speeches and past policies and stances.
For example, during their Cleveland convention
Republican leaders propose to decouple accreditation
from federal financial aid. That means that a lot
of colleges and universities will feel no pressure to
maintain a minimum of standards and …
The Portuguesinhos: Experiences Of Return And Reintegration Of Angolan Police Commissioned Officers Who Studied In Portugal, Cristina Udelsmann Rodrigues
The Portuguesinhos: Experiences Of Return And Reintegration Of Angolan Police Commissioned Officers Who Studied In Portugal, Cristina Udelsmann Rodrigues
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This paper analyses individual pathways of Angolan commissioned officers educated in Portugal, focusing specifically on their return to their country of origin and on the features of their reinsertion in the professional life. It aims at contributing to the discussion of anthropological theories of mobility and migration, discussing issues of qualification and circulation of ‘brains’ between developed and developing countries. The analysis is based on quantitative and qualitative data obtained by conducting desk and field research. Before focusing on the strategies of these migrants returning to Angola and on the forms of (re)inclusion they mobilise particularly under the designation of …

One of the loudest hypes in the history of higher
education has been all the chat about MOOCs.
The idea of Massive Open Online Courses was
launched five years ago when Stanford University
announced that by using Internet-based technologies
they would be able to offer college classes
for free.
Imagine, a world-class university offering a free
education from the comfort of your home, one that
didn’t require any admission tests or high school
transcripts. The possibilities were so exciting that
immediately there was talk about the final revolution
in higher education – the end of colleges and
universities as we …

The Climate Of Opinion In Illinois 2008- 2016: Roots Of Gridlock, John Jackson, Charles W. Leonard, Shiloh L. Deitz
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
Since January 1, 2015, Illinois has been frozen in a governmental and political gridlock that has dominated the state’s political discourse, consumed the energies of all involved, and created chaos in governmental and non-profit agencies that normally deliver state services. It has also created untold hardship and suffering among those who are most dependent on state services. The conflict has especially threatened to drastically reduce the quality and missions of the institutions of public higher education in Illinois, a state system that was widely recognized as one of the best in the nation and the world.

Assessing Understanding Of Sexual Assault Resources And Response Among Health Sciences Students, Michelle M. Pappalardo
Assessing Understanding Of Sexual Assault Resources And Response Among Health Sciences Students, Michelle M. Pappalardo
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Background: The widely published statistic of 1 in 5 represents the number of women on college campuses who have been sexually assaulted (White House Office of the Press Secretary, 2014). Many colleges and universities have been attempting to address the sensitive topic of sexual assault for quite some time; however, sexual violence still remains prevalent on campuses throughout the United States (Allen, Ridgeway, & Swan, 2015). Many of the roadblocks an institution faces in its efforts may stem from a lack of understanding of the true nature of student attitudes surrounding the topic of sexual assault. The specific needs of …

Examining The Motivations And Benefits Of Student-Athletes Performing Community Service., Matthew Ryan Huml
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With over 460,000 active student-athletes (NCAA, n.d.), the student sub-population is large enough to investigate potential options for institutions to increase their academic achievement. Additionally, participating in academic-related activities is especially important because of concerns about student-athletes spending more than the 20 hours per week the NCAA allows for working on their sport (Wolverton, 2008). Studies frequently highlight a lack of effort by student-athletes to adjust to academic opportunities and expectations within higher education (Adler & Adler, 1991; Lally & Kerr, 2005; Levine, Etchison, & Oppenheimer, 2014; Miller & Kerr, 2003). To combat this adjustment to higher education, community service …

Not Just A Watered-Down Version Of A Freshman Orientation, Emily Skibski
Not Just A Watered-Down Version Of A Freshman Orientation, Emily Skibski
Honors Projects
I developed and piloted two 40 minute sessions for Bowling Green State University’s (BGSU) Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) Program, a one-day intesenive orientation program. After developing facilitation guides for these sessions, I trained a group of eight Orientation Leaders (OLs) to facilitate sessions for nontraditional and transfer students during SOAR, which occurred on January 8, 2016. Depending on how a student self-identified, the student attended among sessions for nontraditional, transfer, or traditional students. A facilitator’s guide for a session for traditional students was already developed and in use. The facilitation guides created for this honors project were designed …
