Ruptura: Acknowledging The Lost Subjects Of The Service Learning Story, Tracy Hamler Carrick, Margaret Himley, Tobi Jacobi Jan 2000

Ruptura: Acknowledging The Lost Subjects Of The Service Learning Story, Tracy Hamler Carrick, Margaret Himley, Tobi Jacobi

Higher Education

As members of the Service Learning collective in the Writing Program at Syracuse University, we have been actively designing and teaching a sequence of undergraduate writing courses that integrate community service in various ways -by asking students to write about the nonprofit agencies where they participate, to write for those sites by producing brochures and websites, and to write with people as tutors in adult literacy programs or in local urban high schools. 1

Assessing The Effects Of Service-Learning On Student Writing, Adrian J. Wurr Jan 2000

Assessing The Effects Of Service-Learning On Student Writing, Adrian J. Wurr

Higher Education

This paper proposes methods to study the impact of service-learning on the writing performance cf native and non-native English speaking students in first-year college composition. Linguistic and rhetorical features commonly identified as affecting judgments of writing quality will be compared to holistic essay and portfolio ratings to describe the impact of different teaching and learning contexts on writing performance. The implications of the study will be of particular interest to L1 and L2 university composition instructors interested in learning more about service-learning and writing assessment.

Evaluating Experiential Teaching Methods In A Policy Practice Course: The Case For Service Learning To Increase Political Participation, Cynthia J. Rocha Jan 2000

Evaluating Experiential Teaching Methods In A Policy Practice Course: The Case For Service Learning To Increase Political Participation, Cynthia J. Rocha

Higher Education

This study compares the effects of experiential learning on policy-related values, competency, and activity levels of two groups of recent MSW graduates from one university. The study group received experiential service learning in the MSW program, primarily in an advanced policy course, while the comparison group did not. The author explains experiential teaching and service learning methods, as well the activities included in the policy course. Results indicate that both groups placed a high value on political skills. However, the experiential group was significantly more likely to perceive themselves as competent policy practitioners and to perform policy-related activities after graduation.

Crafting Multicultural Science Education With Preservice Teachers Through Service-Learning, Angela Calabrese Barton Jan 2000

Crafting Multicultural Science Education With Preservice Teachers Through Service-Learning, Angela Calabrese Barton

Higher Education

Many science educators, in the US and elsewhere, support the idea that all students should have fair and equal opportunities to become scientifically literate through authentic, real problem-based science education. However, this challenge requires teachers to find ways to help all students feel comfortable with, and connected to, science. Despite the general consensus around the ideal of science for all, science teacher education programmes have had little or no impact on pre-service teachers’ philosophies of teaching and learning, especially as it relates to serving under-served populations in science. In this paper, I explore community service-learning as one way of addressing …

How Service Works. Summary Of The W. K. Kellogg Foundation's "Service Works": A Retrospective Evaluation Of Higher Education Service Programs, Cynthis Koch, Mark Lelle, Robert Long, Michael Van Buren Jan 2000

How Service Works. Summary Of The W. K. Kellogg Foundation's "Service Works": A Retrospective Evaluation Of Higher Education Service Programs, Cynthis Koch, Mark Lelle, Robert Long, Michael Van Buren

Higher Education

Service learning is an undergraduate education strategy found across four program areas funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF). This cross-foundation, retrospective evaluation examines 35 projects of $100,000 or more funded between 1985-95. Study information was based on qualitative data and approaches, with the majority of project activities and results self-reported by grantees. Written surveys and review of annual progress reports submitted by grantees were augmented by follow-up telephone inquiries and e-mails. Four international projects are included in the evaluations. Most projects used approaches involving classroom learning, community service, and reflection on service within the context of coursework. The …

Virtual Teams In The Classroom: A Case Study, Nancy E. Landrum, Lori D. Paris Jan 2000

Virtual Teams In The Classroom: A Case Study, Nancy E. Landrum, Lori D. Paris

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

With the increase in technology and globalization, virtual teams are to the new century what self-managed work teams were to the past. Virtual teams are "cross-functional teams that operate across space, time, and organizational boundaries with members whocommunicate mainly through electronic technologies" (McShane & Von Glinow, 2000, p. 271). A virtual team is a tool that the organizations can employ to make quick decisions in a complex environment, especially, in an environment where employees are spreadacross the globe (Duarte & Snyder, 1999; Manz & Sims, 1987; McShane & Von Glinow, 2000).

Both traditional and self-managed work teams have long been …

Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler Jan 2000

Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

The practical concerns of an individual interested in learning about prayer in an academic context are interconnected with the practical concerns about teaching an academic course on prayer. A pilot study proposed to investigate and evaluate the context and content of academic courses on personal prayer from the perspective of teaching prayer, asking what proportion of institutions of higher education offer courses on prayer, in which department, and on what level. The search was limited to the Christian faith, and in particular to private colleges and universities of the Catholic denomination. An online Internet search yielded a sample of 126 …

An Analysis Of Teacher And Student Leadership And Gender Differentiation Within Academic Divisions At Three Virginia And Tennessee Liberal Arts Colleges, Mary L. Cole

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This quantitative study investigated a range of leadership behaviors by teachers (teacher characteristics) and students (student characteristics) inside their higher education classrooms and various aspects of those environments (classroom characteristics). The behaviors and environmental aspects examined are those determined by research findings to foster and enhance participant growth and development. Cluster sampling was used for this study of 25 classes representing 5 divisions of the curriculum at 3 institutions. The instruments were administered to 277 students and 25 teachers during the spring of 1999. The null hypotheses for main effects of teacher, student, and classroom characteristics were tested on the …

Pre- And Post-Matriculation Correlates Of Student Retention Within A Community College Setting, Pamela E. Goodman Dec 1999

Pre- And Post-Matriculation Correlates Of Student Retention Within A Community College Setting, Pamela E. Goodman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the 1990s, due in part to declining enrollment numbers and prolonged budget constraints, student retention became a primary focus in higher education. Aligned with the nationwide interest, this longitudinal, archival study focused on the correlates of student retention at Walters State Community College, located in Morristown, Tennessee. The population involved 17,497 students enrolled from the fall semester of 1992 through the fall semester of 1997. Four sets of variables were investigated--demographic variables, pre-matriculation variables, post-matriculation variables related to grades, and post-matriculation variables related to enrollment. The data were collected through the use of a computer program written to access …

An Examination Of Multi-Institutional Networks, Nancy L. Thomas Oct 1999

An Examination Of Multi-Institutional Networks, Nancy L. Thomas

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

The purpose of this paper is to identify techniques for designing and maintaining effective multi-institutional collaborative projects that will also encourage the success of each individual institution. It contains recommendations regarding the formation and management of the networks. First, it reviews project goals and desired outcomes, with consideration of whether collaboration should be a means or an end. Next, the paper turns to strategies for forming and managing networks, with particular attention to the selection and role of a “project leader.” It then considers the role and responsibility of institutional participants, reviewing criteria for network participation and arguing in favor …

The Virtual University: Lessons From A Virtual Cross-Cultural Learning Situation In International Management, Mikael Søndergaard, Jeanette Lemmergaard, Paul Donnelly, Marta B. Cálas

Conference papers

This paper addresses some issues regarding virtual learning and the future of traditional universities. Specifically, it considers these issues by reflecting on the following: First, it focuses on the repercussions of information technologies for teaching and learning in "cross-cultural" courses. It critically assesses, via three recent examples, how these approaches influence teaching and learning in the context of international management courses. Second, drawing from the above examples, the paper reflects more broadly on the implications of these technologies: (1) for new forms of knowing and knowledge production; and (2) for the future of institutional conditions of universities.
