Communication Arts And Sciences In Transition, Douglas M. Trank, Sanuel L. Becker, Barbara Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This study presents a comprehensive appraisal of the state of communication arts and sciences departments in U.S. higher education during the mid-1980s. Drawing on survey data from 373 institutions, the research examines departmental organization, faculty demographics, curricular emphases, and budgetary trends. Findings reveal a field in ongoing transition, marked by diverse departmental structures and naming conventions, frequent reorganizations, and the separation of traditional areas such as theatre, mass communication, and speech pathology into independent units. Faculty data indicate modest levels of tenure and continuing gender disparities, though representation of women and minorities is increasing. Salary levels and resource distributions vary …

An Analysis Of Perceptual Differences And Congruities Between California Community College Chancellors And Presidents In Multi-College Districts Regarding The Decision-Making Role Of The Presidents, Jeanne Davis Atherton Edd

Purpose This study was designed to provide foundational information concerning the perceptions of California community college chancellors and presidents in multi-college districts, regarding the presidents' decision-making role, at both the college and districtwide levels. Factors pertaining to the chancellors and presidents' professional background, and to district characteristics were reviewed for possible relationships to perceptual congruities and differences. Methodology Survey research methodology provided the basis for the design of the study. Eleven district chancellors and 28 presidents responded to a 24 item, two level Likert-type instrument and a professional background questionnaire. Focused on communication departments in higher education, this article considers Theory Z as a framework for administrative management during periods of limited resources. It describes Theory Z as an approach grounded in participatory decision making, egalitarian relationships, delegation, shared philosophy, and attention to human resources. The discussion links these principles to communication administration by emphasizing consensus, quality circles, departmental self study, consumer definitions of program quality, and long range planning. It also addresses hiring, evaluation, rewards, recognition, and the influence of individual interests on departmental objectives. The purpose of this research was to study the transition process of office automation and its impact on clerical workers. The objective was to provide computer-naive managers with recommendations on factors to consider when managing the office automation change process. The topic was investigated using a case study approach. The setting was a large, multi-function, research-oriented, urban university on the west coast. Data were gathered through interviews, observations and examination of documents. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine selected demographic characteristics of master degree graduates, who majored in school administration, and who graduated from the Graduate Division of Education since the 1976 Summer quarter through the 1981 Summer quarter; (2) to ascertain the extent to which these graduates perceived the courses of instruction in their academic preparationas being relevant to subsequent educational administration functions; and (3) to determine additional courses of instruction, not in the present curriculum, that these selected graduates perceived would be professionally relevant to current educational administrative functions.
