Understanding The Role Of Cultural Competence In Peer Mentorship Programs For International Students: A Student Development Theory Perspective, Nikheal Patel, Daniel Calhoun, Steven Tolman
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
International students often face challenges while pursuing higher education in a foreign country. These challenges can negatively impact their sense of belonging and community, resulting in social disconnection. Examining the role of culturally competent peer mentoring programs for international students can foster a sense of belonging among international students. Peer mentorship may provide international students with a supportive environment and community, helping them navigate university life. In contrast, student development theory can inform the design of programs and services that support international students in their transition to American higher education. These strategies can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment …

Reimagining Higher Education, Jasmine Campos
Reimagining Higher Education, Jasmine Campos
Pepperdine Policy Review
The higher education system in America has taken on a different role over the course of the last two centuries. The shift from an institution only available to young men to a means of economic mobility for everyone has resulted in strain on the system leading to soaring prices, burdened students, and an unprepared economy. After a thorough review of the data, the cost of education along with a confusing marketplace has led students to feel wary about four-year institutions. Furthermore, the change in the very purpose of higher education has led to small universities fighting larger ones on the …

Mandated Sexual Violence Prevention In Higher Education: A Quantitative Analysis Of Student Response To Sexual Harassment And Violence Through A Framework Of Organizational Culture, Andrew L. Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Sexual violence (SV) is a global public health crisis of pandemic proportions. Sexual harassment (SH) and violence are pervasive on college campuses, negatively impacting students, faculty, and staff. To address this, U.S. universities are required by federal law to implement EBP programs to foster awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and skills/behaviors (competencies) to prevent or mitigate sexual misconduct. Improving these competencies can increase students’ capacity to respond to SH and SV they experience or witness positively impacting retention, health, wellness, and graduation outcomes. Additionally, recent empirical evidence has linked organizational culture (i.e., values, shared beliefs, and artifacts) and competencies to effectively responding …

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a policy that provides temporary relief from deportation to young undocumented immigrants, as well as social security cards and legal work authorization to qualifying individuals. Students with DACA encounter a variety of barriers to completing higher education due to the nature of the DACA policy. DACA places restrictions on access to federal resources and state resources, inhibiting access to financial aid opportunities. DACA does not provide lawful status to recipients—this breeds uncertainty about the future, preventing DACA students from scholastic planning. The uncertainty of the future is exacerbated by the fact that DACA …
