A Study To Determine Webster University-Kansas City Curriculum And Program Needs For The 1990’S, Richard D.J. St. Clair Aug 1989

A Study To Determine Webster University-Kansas City Curriculum And Program Needs For The 1990’S, Richard D.J. St. Clair

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Kansas City is one of the forty-five extended centers operated by Webster University (WU) located in St. Louis, Missouri. The Kansas City center, which has approximately one thousand student enrollments, is the sixth largest provider of higher education programs in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Income generated annually at the center is substantial, and is important to the university as it helps defray operational and administrative costs within the Webster system.

The purpose of this major applied research project was to determine what, if any, curriculum and/or program changes should be made in anticipation of a changing workplace, specifically as …

The Hand That Pushes The Rock, Paula Rothenberg Jun 1989

The Hand That Pushes The Rock, Paula Rothenberg

Trotter Review

Only a very few schools in this country actually require all students to spend an entire semester thinking about issues of race and gender. Many more have found a way to incorporate these issues in required courses in “social problems” where racism and sexism get their two weeks along with environmental pollution and other current issues. I think this approach is dead wrong. Racism and sexism are not “problems” or “topics.” They are ways of defining reality and living our lives that most of us have learned along with learning how to tie our shoes and how to drink from …

System-Wide Title Vi Regulation Of Higher Education, 1968-1988: Implications For Increased Minority Participation, John B. Williams

Trotter Review

In 1964, 300,000 blacks were enrolled in the nation’s higher education system, most of them attending black colleges and universities in the South; 4,700,000 whites attended colleges during the same year. With passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Law, the federal government acknowledged an inequity in blacks’ opportunity to attend college and gave promise of becoming a major source of pressure for desegregating higher education. But the potential of Title VI, the promise of government intervention to accomplish greater equity, has never been fulfilled.

Specifically, Title VI renders discriminatory agencies and institutions, including colleges and universities, ineligible to receive federal …

The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman Jun 1989

The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman

New England Journal of Public Policy

Why are faculty becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of the academic workplace? What accounts for burnout and low morale among so many college and university faculty? Is work life for professionals any more satisfying in the business world? What can academic leaders learn from business executives who work vigorously to reenergize their enterprises? Are corporate strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of work life applicable to improving satisfaction and productivity in our colleges and universities?

These concerns were addressed by a number of education leaders at a conference on faculty work life jointly sponsored by the New England Resource …

A Study Of Full-Time Faculty Burnout At Evergreen Valley College, Tanya Johnson May 1989

A Study Of Full-Time Faculty Burnout At Evergreen Valley College, Tanya Johnson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Faculty burnout is a phenomenon of growing proportions in higher education. The results of a 1985 study of full-time faculty at Evergreen Valley College (EVC) indicated a significant burnout problem, making it imperative to identify the contributing factors and to create interventions for alleviating it. The purposes of this study were to: identify major contributors to EVC full-time faculty burnout; discover what is being done to reduce full-time faculty burnout in other California community colleges that are organizationally similar to EVC; and, devise directions to assist EVC to alleviate its full -time faculty burnout.

The research questions for this study …
