Reforming Welfare Reform Postsecondary Education Policy: Two State Case Studies In Political Culture, Organizing, And Advocacy, Charles Price Sep 2005

Reforming Welfare Reform Postsecondary Education Policy: Two State Case Studies In Political Culture, Organizing, And Advocacy, Charles Price

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Welfare reform had the unforeseen effect of causing large numbers of public assistance recipients to drop out of college, discouraging their pursuit and acquisition of postsecondary education (PSE) credentials. There is a growing body of research that shows the value of postsecondary education in getting public assistance recipients onto a path toward occupational and social mobility. The restrictions of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families PSE policy, coupled with the recognition that college participation should be an option for qualified welfare recipients, influenced the emergence of many successful state and county-level movements focused on reforming welfare reform PSE policy. Their work …

Educating For Democracy: Reviving Rhetoric In The General Education Curriculum, David M. Stock Aug 2005

Educating For Democracy: Reviving Rhetoric In The General Education Curriculum, David M. Stock

Theses and Dissertations

This study is, in part, a response to arguments that claim higher education fails to prepare students with fundamental communication skills necessary for everyday life and indicative of "educated" persons. Though the validity of such arguments is contestable, they nonetheless reflect fundamental inadequacies in current educational theories and practices that have evolved over centuries of curricular, cultural, and socioeconomic change. Current theories and practices in higher education, specifically general education, reflect a misunderstanding of both the purpose of education in a democracy and the role of the liberal arts, specifically rhetoric, in accomplishing that purpose. The consequences of rhetorically-impoverished general …

Online Education: The Changing Face Of Higher Education, Patrick G. Moore Aug 2005

Online Education: The Changing Face Of Higher Education, Patrick G. Moore

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

As the shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy advances, the demand for information will continue to rise. With knowledge becoming such an important asset, obtaining information is becoming more of a priority for our society. Higher education is responding to this demand with the use of online education. Technology now provides an avenue to obtain education over the Internet. Time, space, and distance limitations are no longer a deterrent to pursuing new information. As with any new technology, time is needed to refine and determine how to best use it. Online education is no different. In this …

Exploring Differences In Level Of Involvement, Educational Outcomes, And Satisfaction Of Resident Students And Commuter Students At A Rural Community College, Richard Wayne Layman Aug 2005

Exploring Differences In Level Of Involvement, Educational Outcomes, And Satisfaction Of Resident Students And Commuter Students At A Rural Community College, Richard Wayne Layman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Because the vast majority of community colleges were founded to serve commuter students who live within a local and regional area, student residential housing at two-year institutions has been seen as unnecessary. However, an increasing number of community colleges are opening student resident housing. In contrast to all the research available about the impact at four-year institutions of residence (resident students and commuter students), the literature review revealed there has been little research on resident students and commuter students on community college campuses (Murrell, 1998).;This study can be characterized as a preliminary investigation into whether resident students' and commuter students' …

Counseling And Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students' Perceptions Of Their Faculty's Ethical Behavior, Philip W. Cromer Aug 2005

Counseling And Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students' Perceptions Of Their Faculty's Ethical Behavior, Philip W. Cromer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of psychology doctoral students with regard to their faculty's ethical behavior. A review of the literature suggested that research on the perception of ethical behavior in academia has been narrowly focused on undergraduate students. Furthermore, many of the studies did not convey a comprehensive picture of the students' perceptions of their faculty's ethical behavior. A survey instrument was adapted from a survey used in a study of students' view of their undergraduate professors' actions (Keith-Spiegel, Tabachnick, & Allen, 1993). A randomized sample of 50 accredited counseling psychology doctoral programs and …

Establishing A Technology Based Business Incubator At A Regional University: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, W. Andrew Clark Jun 2005

Establishing A Technology Based Business Incubator At A Regional University: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, W. Andrew Clark

ETSU Faculty Works

University managed technology-based business incubators evolved at major research institutions as a mechanism for university professors to pursue commercial applications of their research without having to resign their university positions. These incubators assisted the universities in retention of valuable faculty and also provided for the development of university intellectual property (IP) to a level where commercialization was probable. In addition to faculty retention and the potential for revenue from commercialization of IP, these incubators further developed the universities’ reputations in producing cutting edge research. The physical proximity of the incubators to the universities is crucial because this allows easy access …

Diversity: A Fundamental American Principle, David Orentlicher Jun 2005

Diversity: A Fundamental American Principle, David Orentlicher

Missouri Law Review

This article argues that both the Court in its defense of diversity and the commentators in their critiques of the diversity rationale have misjudged the public interest in diversity. Rather than having insufficient weight to justify affirmative action or reflecting a limited educational interest," diversity is a critical principle for much of American constitutional and social structure. 12 In particular, the federalist system of government rests in large part on the belief that a diversity of approaches by the fifty states will lead to better government than would a single approach by the national government., Similarly, the American capitalist economic …

Part-Time University Faculty Members: The Relationship Between Environment And Satisfaction, Kyle Scafide

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the environment and the satisfaction of certain part-time university faculty members. A web-based, confidential questionnaire was made available to voluntary participants. The data collection occurred during the Fall semester of 2004. The survey provided data from 10 Louisiana universities in the top four Carnegies categories of Doctoral Extensive, Doctoral Intensive, and Masters I and II universities. Though a total of 610 faculty members participated in this study, the final sample included 542 participants. The research questions of this study focused on job status (part-time or full-time) and academic discipline …

From Presence To “E-Presence” In Online Nursing Education, Lisa M. Kaiser Phd, Msn, Bsn, Rn

Dissertations

Online web-based course offerings are now common in many institutions of higher education In response to the current and severe nursing shortage, estimated to represent a 20% vacancy rate by the year 2015, (Tarkin, 2003) many more universities have created online nursing courses for registered nurses wishing to continue their education in nursing. The National League for Nursing (NLN) set research priorities that urged exploration of the impact that technology has on the content and nature of teaching and learning in nursing education (1999). Using a series of separate synchronous, online focus groups and 1:1 interviews with nurse educator experts …

Global Citizenship As A Function Of Higher Education: The Demographic And Institutional Determinants In A Graduate Student Population, Jade G. Winn Edd May 2005

Global Citizenship As A Function Of Higher Education: The Demographic And Institutional Determinants In A Graduate Student Population, Jade G. Winn Edd

Dissertations

Over the last twenty years, the explosive growth in information technologies, combined with the globalization and easy access to other cultures, has allowed people to think of themselves more as citizens of the world than of a particular nation. Although the notion of “global citizenship” is often discussed in the popular press, little scholarly attention has been devoted to its measurement. Less attention has been paid to the role higher education plays in creating global citizens. To address these problems, a survey instrument was created to measure three facets of global citizenship: environmentalism, social justice, and civic responsibility, and was …

Entrepreneurial Initiatives At Public Liberal Arts And General Baccalaureate Colleges, Jack R. Kirby May 2005

Entrepreneurial Initiatives At Public Liberal Arts And General Baccalaureate Colleges, Jack R. Kirby

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Until recent years, the concept of entrepreneurship has been the subject of study and application primarily in the private sector business community. However, in the wake of decreasing traditional sources of funding, higher operating costs, increasing government intervention, and institutional initiatives, entrepreneurship has gained increasing attention in public higher education (Elford & Hemstreet, 1996; Keast, 1995; Kozeracki, 1998).;This study examined the current patterns of entrepreneurial activities in public liberal arts and general baccalaureate colleges as defined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education (The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 2000). A survey instrument was prepared to …
