Survival Of The Fittest? The Rebranding Of West Virginia Higher Education, James Martin Owston Jan 2007

Survival Of The Fittest? The Rebranding Of West Virginia Higher Education, James Martin Owston

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

During the years 1996 to 2005, West Virginia produced the greatest proportion (56.25%) of regionally accredited institutional rebrandings. In addition, the state experienced the greatest proportion (25%) of the specific “college-to-university” rebranding strategy than any other state. This study set out to discover the reasons why West Virginia produced such a high percentage of “college-to-university” changes. Using a mixed method approach of analysis, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative methods to determine the rationale, strategies, and implications of the college-to-university change. As West Virginia was viewed as a nested population in Appalachia, a population of 51 institutions that experienced the …

A Gendered Update On Women Law Deans: Who, Where, Why, And Why Not?, Laura M. Padilla Jan 2007

A Gendered Update On Women Law Deans: Who, Where, Why, And Why Not?, Laura M. Padilla

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines law school deans, how many are women, when they became deans, and what the trajectory is like for their numbers in the future. This article will provide additional empirical information through the 2005-2006 academic year. It will also present results from a survey mailed to all women deans in the fall of 2005 and to a similar number of male deans. Rather than present all the survey summaries at once, I have elected to include results where substantively appropriate.

Higher Education Desegregation: An Analysis Of State Efforts In Systems Formerly Operating Segregated Systems Of Higher Education, Edwin H. Litolff, Iii Jan 2007

Higher Education Desegregation: An Analysis Of State Efforts In Systems Formerly Operating Segregated Systems Of Higher Education, Edwin H. Litolff, Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The landmark Supreme Court Decision of Brown v. the Board of Education in 1954 struck down the policy of separate but equal and set a legal precedent that racial discrimination in public education violates the United States constitution. Later the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibited colleges and universities from discriminating based upon age, sex, race, or religion. The Civil Rights Act strengthened the enforcement capabilities of the Office of Civil Rights in ensuring desegregation. These legislative and judicial efforts have engaged higher education and state officials in often-controversial attempts to desegregate systems and institutions of higher education. Because colleges and …

The original purpose of this study was to investigate youth needs, specifically in the south western region (the 'South West') of Western Australia, and then to explore how these needs might be addressed in terms of current curriculum and teaching practices. The following research questions guided our investigation:

- What are the educational and occupational aspirations of young people from the South West of Western Australia?

- What do young people identify as influences on their educational and occupational aspirations and attainment?

As the data collection progressed, it was evident to all those involved that, whilst there were expressed needs, …

A Study Of Gender Equality At Private And Public Two-Year And Four-Year Florida Institutions, Stacey Lazenby Malaret

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to examine the perception of gender equality from the viewpoint of women administrators at Florida public and private two- and four-year institutions. Potential respondents were chosen from American College Personnel Association and/or National Association of Student Personnel Administrators databases. The data used for this study were obtained from 32 female administrators (50% response rate) who completed a self-administered online questionnaire, distributed to potential respondents in August and September, 2007. Collected data were entered into an SPSS database. Through data analysis, confidence intervals were reported for each survey item. Comparable means were studied for each of the six …

Is The Roman Catholic Prohibition Of Female Priests Sexist?: How Catholic College Students Think About Women’S Ordination And Sexism, Michael Maher Jr, Linda M. Sever, Shaun Pichler Jan 2007

Is The Roman Catholic Prohibition Of Female Priests Sexist?: How Catholic College Students Think About Women’S Ordination And Sexism, Michael Maher Jr, Linda M. Sever, Shaun Pichler

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

In April 2003, the researchers conducted a survey of undergraduate students living in residence halls at Loyola University Chicago. The majority of Catholic students in the study expressed disagreement with the statement, “Women should not be allowed to be clergy (priests, pastors, imams, rabbis, etc.),” and the majority of them expressed agreement with the statement, “Sexism is wrong.” This was not a surprise to the researchers. What was surprising was the fact that the correlation of the responses by Catholics between these two statements was insignificant (r = -.089). The researches explored this question with focus groups made up …

Rethinking Student Press In The 'Marketplace Of Ideas' After Hosty: The Argument For Encouraging Professional Journalistic Practices, Jacob H. Rooksby Jan 2007

Rethinking Student Press In The 'Marketplace Of Ideas' After Hosty: The Argument For Encouraging Professional Journalistic Practices, Jacob H. Rooksby

Law Faculty Publications

On February 21, 2006, the Supreme Court denied certiorari to Margaret L. Hosty, Jeni S. Porche, and Steven P. Barba, former student editors and staff writers of Illinois’ Governors State University (“GSU”) student newspaper, the Innovator. By denying their petition, the Court effectively ended the trio’s five-year legal battle in which they sought 42 U.S.C. § 1983 relief from Patricia Carter, Dean of Students at GSU. The students had argued that Dean Carter’s actions, which effectively required that they submit prospective issues of the Innovator to her office for administrative approval before going to press, violated their First Amendment …

Be Careful What You Ask For: Educacion Para Todas/Os, The Perils And The Power, Jessica Solyom, Jeremiah Chin, Kristi Ryujin

Articles

Demonstrations supporting human and civil rights, while often romanticized as a phenomenon of the past, are becoming more pervasive today, reflecting the continued forms of discrimination and oppression undocumented workers, individuals, and families experience. In the past few years, Utah residents have been engaged in their own battle to determine the level of support the state is willing to extend students of color interested in attending institutions of higher education. On the "frontstage" many of the state's universities echo a rhetoric of support for diversity. Some even go as far as to outline their commitment to diversity as part of …

Investigating Comprehensive Assessment Plans In Undergraduate Communication Studies Programs, Andrea Celeste Weber Jan 2007

Investigating Comprehensive Assessment Plans In Undergraduate Communication Studies Programs, Andrea Celeste Weber

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Outcome assessments of academic programs have become increasingly critical in recent years. A continuous process formed to "monitor and improve student learning," true assessment serves to focus institutions of higher education on student learning (Allen, 2004, p. 5). It is vital to understand and explore current assessment practices in departments of communication studies to ensure and enhance the quality and future of education in the field. This study represents an initial attempt at establishing a baseline of assessment practices utilized within departments of communication studies. The results exhibit the extent to which assessment is being used for continuous improvement of …

Technology And Older Faculty: A Descriptive Study Of Older Florida Community College Faculty, Christopher D. Van Der Kaay Jan 2007

Technology And Older Faculty: A Descriptive Study Of Older Florida Community College Faculty, Christopher D. Van Der Kaay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Institutions of higher learning across the United States are experiencing an aging faculty population. A significant proportion of college and university faculty are over 55, a growth expected to continue in future years. Parallel to this growth and change has been an expanding use of technology in higher education. Despite this trend and potential implications, few studies have provided in-depth insight into older faculty and technology. The study used a quantitative descriptive design to provide a comprehensive look at older community college faculty and various aspects of technology. Areas examined included older faculty's perceptions of technology, their attitudes toward institutional …
