Good, Better, Best: English Language Development Practices In Graduate Business Programs, K. James Hartshorn, Maureen Snow Andrade, Norman W. Evans, Shaylana Davis

Faculty Publications

Business is the top field of study for international students in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Yet, evidence suggests that not all international students who speak English as a second language are adequately equipped with the language skills they need to succeed. At the same time, the number of international students seeking business training in English-medium universities continues to rise. Thus, this study sought to fill an increasingly important gap in the literature by examining the strategies, innovations, challenges, and outcomes for U.S. schools of business who admit large concentrations of international ESL students at the …

Transfer Student Experiences At Stanford University And The University Of California, Berkeley, Rachael Madison Dec 2017

Transfer Student Experiences At Stanford University And The University Of California, Berkeley, Rachael Madison

Master's Theses

Elite institutions have a long history of serving students from high socioeconomic status families. Transfer students who begin their college career at community colleges are typically from low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented minority status families. This population of students has historically been underrepresented at elite colleges. The purpose of this study was to examine the community college transfer student experience at two elite universities, one public and one private, and how institutional programs and structures affect the transfer student experience. The study gathered information from eight community college transfer students, four from each elite university, interviewed in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. Four …

Undocumented Students’ Access To Higher Education In San Francisco, Bay Area, Sandra Miklosic Dec 2017

Undocumented Students’ Access To Higher Education In San Francisco, Bay Area, Sandra Miklosic

Master's Theses

This paper will explore the question: “in what ways does DACA status influence undocumented students’ ability to access higher education in San Francisco and Bay Area, California?” Even though DACA does not encompass any direct policies regarding access to education, there is a very strong correlation between having DACA status and accessing higher education for the undocumented students. In this research, I highlight the voices of undocumented students through the method of testimonio. Each participant reflects on their personal experiences with DACA while accessing postsecondary education. In this research, I explore how testimonio, as a methodology and a theoretical framework, …

Painting A Picture: Understanding Our Student Parent Profile On Campus, Vicki Squires, Jason Disano

Journal of Global Education and Research

Little information or research exists regarding the profile of student parents on campus even though increasingly more non-traditional and mature students access post-secondary education. This study presents information generated through a telephone survey of students conducted by a research lab on one Canadian campus. The purpose of the research was to uncover more information about this student group with the intent that the data would inform the development of guidelines for allocation of additional childcare spaces on campus as soon as a new childcare centre was completed. Better information on their needs as students and parents would be helpful in …

This paper examines the effects of Proposition 209 on the underrepresented minority population in the UC system, specifically focusing on the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The areas of focus for addressing the issues of Proposition 209 at UCI are outreach programs, admissions policies, and recruitment programs. This paper examines …

Emotional And Cognitive Engagement In Higher Education Classrooms, Kristine C. Manwaring

Theses and Dissertations

This is a multi-article format dissertation that explores emotional and cognitive engagement in higher education classrooms. Student engagement in higher education classrooms has been associated with desired outcomes such as academic achievement, retention, and graduation. Student engagement is a multi-faceted concept, consisting of behavioral, emotional, and cognitive components. A deeper understanding of how these components interact would allow instructors and course designers to facilitate more engaging learning experiences for students. The first article is an extended literature review that investigates the extant empirical research on the relationship between emotional and cognitive engagement, and between emotional engagement and academic outcomes in …

A Forgotten Demographic: Low-Income First-Generation College Students, Ryan Joseph-Lee Haynes Dec 2017

A Forgotten Demographic: Low-Income First-Generation College Students, Ryan Joseph-Lee Haynes

The focus of this Capstone is on the need for support for low-income first-generation college students. An evidence based argument is made that these students are at a major disadvantage as compared to their counterparts. Consideration of the issue, should include the perspectives of high school students who will be the first in their family to apply and go to college. Three action options emerged from the analysis of data. Occupational Therapy Students In Norway: Do Their Approaches To Studying Vary By Year In The Program?, Tore Bonsaksen, Mikkel M. Thørrisen, Talieh Sadeghi

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Approaches to studying may be influenced by students’ age, maturity, and experience in higher education. Students’ approaches to studying may develop toward deep and/or strategic approaches and away from a surface approach as they move through the curriculum, which is generally considered a positive development. This study aimed to identify differences in approaches to studying among first-, second-, and third-year students enrolled in an occupational therapy program. Three cohorts of students (n = 160) from one university college completed the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) along with sociodemographic information. One-way analyses of variance were used to …

The Relentless Pursuit Of University Rankings Is Creating A Two-Track System, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Lim Oct 2017

The Relentless Pursuit Of University Rankings Is Creating A Two-Track System, Eng Fong Pang, Linda Lim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Global university rankings constructed mainly by Western commercial media outlets, like this week’s Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings, seem to be a perennial sourceof interest in Singapore.Yet, rankings have well-known limitations. The Ministry of Education (MOE) and university leaders frequently deny that they motivate policy orare a basis for institutional evaluation. But they do provide a convenient way to ascertain ifuniversities meet our aspirations for world-class status. At the same time, because rankings tend to emphasise research publications of global significance, there is some skepticism among academics and the general public everywhere of their value to localcommunities.

Against The Clock, Trey Conatser

Greater Faculties: A Review of Teaching and Learning

In The Slow Professor, Maggie Berg and Barbara K. Seeber's thoughtful contribution to the conversation on academic labor is to challenge what often goes without saying: that it's good to be more efficient, to be faster, to manage as many tasks as possible at once. How can we practice slowness and pleasure in thoughtful ways for the good of our disciplines and colleagues and, more importantly, for those whom our decisions and actions affect profoundly?

This dissertation is a qualitative study that explores how first-generation college students experienced their educational journey in a private four-year institution of higher education. Using data from in depth interviews with 19 first generation college students from three private four year institutions, this study looked at how participants made sense of race, class, gender, and Socioeconomic Status (SES) as it intersects with their first-generation status as part of their lived experience within a private educational setting. It also examined how first-generation students traversed the borders and margins of different communities as they pursue higher education and the kinds of cultural …

The War On Higher Education Is Now Underway., Aldemaro Romero Jr. Aug 2017

The War On Higher Education Is Now Underway., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

In 1969, President Richard Nixon formally declared

a “war on drugs” that would be directed to combat the

use of illicit drugs in the U.S. This and other “wars,”

such as the “war on gangs” or “war on cancer” have

come to signify major efforts by the federal government

against something they perceive as a threat.

In past articles in this column I have written about

concerted efforts by some groups and conservative

media to diminish funding for higher education, defame

college education as a passport to better standards

of living, portray colleges and universities as “liberal

nests” out of …
