Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study of African-American seniors at East Tennessee State University, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville was conducted to solicit student responses about the perceptions of their schools, university services, and experiences at those institutions. The Role Of Values In Higher Education: A Case Study Of Two Higher Education Institutions, Bonnie L. Burchett
The Role Of Values In Higher Education: A Case Study Of Two Higher Education Institutions, Bonnie L. Burchett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to develop case studies providing a description of how two higher education institutions addressed the role of values. The researcher attempted to provide insight and understanding into the implicit and explicit values of the institutions through a values audit process. The methods of transmitting those values internally and externally were examined, as well as, implications for students, faculty, and staff. There was also an analysis as to what evaluation process was used to ensure compliance or alignment and to gauge that alignment between educational practices and the institutions' mission and purpose. The study …
The Evaluation Of Research For Promotion And Tenure: An Organizational Perspective, Elsa G. Nadler
The Evaluation Of Research For Promotion And Tenure: An Organizational Perspective, Elsa G. Nadler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The literature on promotion and tenure in institutions of higher education includes a substantial amount of research on various aspects of faculty productivity. Yet other research concentrates on the organizational structure of higher education. In his 1986 book, Burton Clark called for research that would examine how what he called the enterprise (the local university as opposed to the statewide system) and departments within it interact in important arenas.;This dissertation takes up Clark's challenge to examine the interaction of enterprise and department in promotion and tenure in three areas: goals, structure and operations. Content analysis of faculty handbooks from 25 …

Two Studies Of The Impact Of Performance Feedback On Community Service Learning Among College Students, Mahesh Subramony
Two Studies Of The Impact Of Performance Feedback On Community Service Learning Among College Students, Mahesh Subramony
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
In Study 1, I manipulated students' access to frequent written performance feedback from agency supervisors. Thirty-eight service-learning students enrolled in a Midwest university were randomly assigned to a performance feedback (experimental) condition and a no performance feedback (control) condition. Student learning from community service (SLCS) was measured both before and after the semester-long intervention. Students in the experimental group did not show significant improvements in SLCS over those in the control condition. However, an individual differences variable, feedback disposition predicted SLCS.
In study 2, I looked at the impact of organizational feedback quality, client feedback quality, student feedback seeking, and …

Problems, Politics, And Possibilities Of A Progressive Approach To Service Learning In A Community College: A Case Study, Kevin L. Burr
Problems, Politics, And Possibilities Of A Progressive Approach To Service Learning In A Community College: A Case Study, Kevin L. Burr
Higher Education
Change -- it is easy to determine when change is needed and even what needs to be changed; the problem is effective implementation. Cohen and Brawer (1989) said that community colleges still have not found a way to implement alternative learning methodologies.
It is reasonable to assume that in an institution dedicated since its inception to 'good teaching', new instructional forms will be tried. However, despite the spread of reproducible media, traditional methods of instruction still flourish. Visitors to a campus might be shown mathematics laboratories, the media production facilities, and computer-assisted instructional programs. But on the way to those …

Intergenerational Studies In Higher Education: An Initial Survey (1999), Sally Newman, Anita Johnson
Intergenerational Studies In Higher Education: An Initial Survey (1999), Sally Newman, Anita Johnson
Intergenerational
During the last decade, intergenerational studies has begun to attract an increasing number of academics in a variety of academic fields. Similarly, students in increasing numbers are contacting departments in higher education, including intergenerational units such as Generations Together to inquire about courses and training opportunities. Additionally, human service professionals are demonstrating interest in acquiring the knowledge and competencies necessary to effectively administer intergenerational programs as well as earn academic credit for these new professional skills. Evidence of their interest is the number of online inquiries regarding intergenerational training and educational opportunities.

Rise Of Duty And The Fall Of In Loco Parentis And Other Protective Tort Doctrines In Higher Education Law, The, Peter F. Lake
Missouri Law Review
The story of twentieth century higher education student safety law' is the gradual application of typical rules of civil liability to institutions of higher education and the decline of insulating doctrines, such as in loco parentis,2 which traditionally protected institutions of higher learning from scrutiny in the legal system. A series of recent events have brought public (and legal) attention to questions about the legal rules governing university responsibility for student injuries.3 In recent times, courts have reversed a long-standing tradition of protecting universities from civil liability for physical injury to students arising
Long-Term Effects Of Volunteerism During The Undergraduate Years, Alexander W. Astin, Linda J. Sax, Juan Avalos
Long-Term Effects Of Volunteerism During The Undergraduate Years, Alexander W. Astin, Linda J. Sax, Juan Avalos
Higher Education
A growing number of colleges and universities in the United States have become actively engaged in encouraging their undergraduate students to participate in some form of volunteer service (Cohen & Kinsey, 1994; Levine, 1994; Markus, Howard, & King, 1993; O'Brien, 1993). Further, service is increasingly being incorporated into the curriculums of major and general education courses (Cohen & Kinsey, 1994; Levine, 1994). While relatively few colleges include service learning or volunteer service as a curricular requirement, the number is growing and such a requirement has become an increasingly frequent topic of debate (Markus, Howard, & King, 1993). That the top …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this study were: (a) To determine whether full-time teaching faculty and full-time administrators perceive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) 1998 Education Criteria for Performance Excellence (ECPE) to be appropriate for assessing Virginia community colleges, and (b) To determine if differences in perceptions exist regarding demographic variables among full-time teaching faculty and among full-time administrators in the use of these criteria to assess Virginia community colleges. Data were collected from a random sample of 129 full-time teaching faculty and 57 full-time administrators using the seven categories and 18 items of the 1998 ECPE. Demographic factors included …
