Navigating Artificial Intelligence Governance: Insights From South African Higher Education It Decision-Makers, John Mangundu
Navigating Artificial Intelligence Governance: Insights From South African Higher Education It Decision-Makers, John Mangundu
The African Journal of Information Systems
Academics and students alike can benefit from the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. AI governance lowers AI risks while ensuring that anticipated AI use objectives are achieved. However, research on AI governance has been lacking, especially in higher education in emerging economies such as South Africa. In light of this serious research gap, the current study presents the findings of a qualitative exploratory investigation of the maturity and preparedness of AI governance in South African higher education institutions. Informed by a combination of the TOE framework, the traditional IT governance model and the adapted IT governance maturity assessment …
Evaluation Of A Timetabling Software Implemented In Tanzanian Higher Education Context, Anna Kayanda, Lazaro Busagala, Matti Tedre
Evaluation Of A Timetabling Software Implemented In Tanzanian Higher Education Context, Anna Kayanda, Lazaro Busagala, Matti Tedre
The African Journal of Information Systems
It is not known whether the combination of two IS system implementation approaches, Design Science Research and eXtreme Programming, can help improve information systems success in the Tanzanian HEI context. To investigate this, this study evaluated a system that was implemented using both approaches. The evaluation used DeLone and McLean’s Information Systems Success Model(D&M) and a mixed research method. The results showed that while neither the system quality nor the information quality influenced the use of the system, service quality and user satisfaction both had an influence on system use (p<0.001). System quality, information quality and service quality, however, were found to have a significant effect on user satisfaction, all three with p<0.001. Furthermore, using the system influenced the perceived net benefits (p<0.001) obtained from using the system. The findings may be helpful to other Tanzanian HEI wishing to implement information systems for their organizations as it shed light on factors that should be considered for a successful implementation. Although the D&M model has been useful on this study, it is limited by its lack of explicit recognition of contextual variables, such as organizational culture, user characteristics, and environmental factors, which can significantly impact system success.

Faculty As Ambassadors Of Diversity Initiatives: Promoting Inclusive Pedagogy Through Innovative Professional Development Program And Community Of Practice, Hyunjin Jinna Kim, Rose Tirotta-Esposito, Luis Colón, Yi Zhang
International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The national and global demographic trends call for attention to advance efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in U.S. higher education. Incorporating DEI initiatives in higher education institutions (HEIs) is more important than ever as accelerated globalization increases student mobility. Implementing effective and inclusive pedagogical approaches in higher education classrooms is also more emphasized as meeting students’ diverse needs is proven to increase students’ engagement, achievement, retention, and even sense of belonging (Barnett, 2020; Kim et al., 2023a; Maguire et al., 2017). This brief paper presents preliminary findings of the data collected from a Faculty as Inclusive Teaching Ambassador …

The Full Range Leadership Model (Frlm): Department Head Perceptions Of Leadership Style And Development, Stephanie Elaine Heroman
The Full Range Leadership Model (Frlm): Department Head Perceptions Of Leadership Style And Development, Stephanie Elaine Heroman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to discover the perceived leadership styles of department heads as categorized by the Full Range Leadership Model (FRLM), developed by Avolio and Bass (1991). The FRLM categorizes leadership style along a continuum, from laissez-faire leadership, to transactional leadership, and ultimately transformational leadership. Even though department heads occupy a pivotal leadership role, many do not have formal leadership training, and instead rise to power through disciplinary expertise. This study will collect data on the experiences contributing to the development of leadership style in department heads. Understanding the leadership styles and experiences of department heads will …
Barriers To Success In Higher Education For Second-Generation Caribbean American Men, Leonard S. Breton
Barriers To Success In Higher Education For Second-Generation Caribbean American Men, Leonard S. Breton
Theses and Dissertations
While the United States may be progressing, second-generation Caribbean American men, those with at least one foreign-born parent (US Census Bureau, 2016), are a population that, despite literature addressing benefits and detriments of their cultural experiences, still warrants continued examination through empirical testing (Lyttle et al., 2011). These students have a range of factors that make them nontraditional students. Challenges such as racism, sexual and ethnic identity, and generational status in this country can be compounded when cultural perspectives of immigrant families are factored in. Caribbean American men are guided by learned behaviors and cultural traditions that influence training and …

This chapter outlines the history of women in higher education. It begins with a description of the disproportional entrance of female students in higher education and how delayed access led to gender imbalance in current college and university leadership. It outlines the intersection of social role theory and barriers that impede the progress of female leaders, and the challenges of women's choice as an explanation for the low number of women university presidents. Barriers experienced by women leaders is also discussed. The chapter closes with solutions to current higher education practices that could improve gender balance in leadership.

Elasticity Of Six-Year Graduation Rate With Respect To Selected Categories Of Expenditure: A Study Of U.S. Public Teaching Colleges, Mushfiq Swaleheen
Elasticity Of Six-Year Graduation Rate With Respect To Selected Categories Of Expenditure: A Study Of U.S. Public Teaching Colleges, Mushfiq Swaleheen
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
Public colleges respond to funding shocks by adjusting the quality of learning. We motivate a college production function that recognize that colleges’ ‘output’ has a quality dimension and, recognize that level of resources use in all categories are endogenous. We deploy a technique that yields consistent estimates of partial elasticities of six-year graduation rate with respect to expenditures that directly touch student learning and college experience in U.S. public teaching colleges. Our finding suggests that during 1987 – 2015, administrative spending category was over funded and instruction, academic support and student service categories were underfunded.

A Critical Examination Of First-Generation Faculty Scholarship: Demonstrating The Need For Intersectional, Empirical Analysis, Derria Byrd, Noreen Siddiqui
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
The triumphs, tribulations, and trials associated with first-generation status during the undergraduate years are well-established in educational research; however, limited scholarship systematically investigates the dispositions, experiences, and practices of first-generation faculty (FGF)—that is, former first-generation college students who have joined the professoriate. In this critical review of literature, the authors identified and analyzed 173 sources, uncovering five dominant themes—(a) negotiating a discordant culture, (b) reframing success, (c) relating to family, (d) seeking social networks, and (e) leveraging identity—that provide insights into how FGF navigate the social, cultural, and professional norms of the academy. Despite recent expansions that center FGF of …
Coercion In Campus Sexual Misconduct, Ailsa V. Boger
Coercion In Campus Sexual Misconduct, Ailsa V. Boger
Honors Theses
Women are at a high risk of experiencing sexual misconduct or assault during their time in college (Graham et al., 2022). Studies suggest that many college students, specifically women, are likely to experience sexual coercion, which is defined as: unwanted sexual activity that occurs when you are pressured, threatened, tricked, or forced in a nonphysical way (Pugh & Becker, 2018; Office on Women’s Health, 2021). Coerced sex is not illegal in most states in the US, so sexual coercion is not seen as important as more aggressive forms of sexual assault that are illegal (Peterson, 2023). Furthermore, the research on …

“We’Re Here, We’Re Queer, And We’Re Not Going Away” Student Policies And Lgbtq+ Students’ Experiences On Canadian Christian Campuses, Angela E. Gallo
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Research highlights that Christian campuses are often unwelcoming and hostile spaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexually diverse (LGBTQ+) students. Yet, research, including emerging Canadian research, often overlooks how institutional policies shape LGBTQ+ students’ experiences. Further, little attention is given to the affirming experiences LGBTQ+ students encounter on Christian campuses. Through a collective case study of two Canadian Christian universities involving document analysis and interviews, I explored the discourses that school policies constructed concerning gender and sexuality, LGBTQ+ students’ experiences of exclusion and affirmation, and how policy, alongside other factors, shapes their experiences and well-being. …
