Scholarly Publishing In Korea: Language, Perception, Practice Of Korean University Faculty, Eun-Young Julia Kim
Faculty Publications
This study reports how internationalization of academic knowledge is reflected in the language choice of Korean academic journals across disciplines and examines perceptions and practices of eighty two faculty from various disciplines at three Korean universities concerning publishing in English journals. The results indicate that natural science has the highest percentage of English-medium journals whereas those in humanities and social science predominantly use Korean as a medium of publication. Similar disciplinary patterns are observed in the responses to survey questions about frequency of publication as well as desire and preference for publishing papers in English. The biggest motivation for Korean …

Capturing The Value Of International Staff Mobility In Higher Education: A Customer-Dominant Logic Approach, Katarzyna Dziewanowska, Rose Quan, Alison Pearce
European Management Studies
This paper aims at analysing and achieving better understanding of the experience of international mobility of academic staff from the perspective of value creation process. Qualitative research methods are used: a combination of individual in-depth interviews and focus group interviews. We apply a customerdominant logic perspective in order to identify the drivers of value co-creation and emerging value types. The study identifies multiple types of value emerging from a mobility experience (e.g. individual and shared value, one-off and longitudinal value). Also, the value co-creation context is investigated and an influence of factors such as personality, previous experiences, situation at home …
Examining The Effects Of The Revision Of An Academic Probation Protocol, Dana Ziter
Examining The Effects Of The Revision Of An Academic Probation Protocol, Dana Ziter
Doctoral Dissertations
Many higher education institutions have implemented protocols for students on academic probation, a status generally triggered by a grade point average (GPA) of below 2.0. For this study, the effects of the revision of a previously created protocol for working with such students at the University of Connecticut was examined. The revised protocol was crafted based on the use of a combination of academic advising models combined with theories in student development and success. The hypotheses were that the revision of the probation protocol would generate positive growth in probation student GPA along with a decrease in submitted academic dismissal …
Inclusion And Social Justice As Peacemaking Within Higher Education, Mary Dana Hinton
Inclusion And Social Justice As Peacemaking Within Higher Education, Mary Dana Hinton
The Journal of Social Encounters
The Journal of Social Encounters has been described as “a venue in which we can encounter one other and build the common good together” (Okumu & Pagnucco, 2017, p. ii). In many ways, this description of the Journal mirrors what we endeavor to accomplish in higher education in the United States in general, and in Catholic higher education in particular. While our mission statements vary, and how we achieve the mission will look different on all of our campuses, there is widespread consensus that higher education provides a space wherein people can learn together for the good of supporting our …

The Initial Planning Process Of An International Service-Learning Pilot Initiative Under Development, Denise P. Krohn
Theses & Dissertations
This research explored the initial planning process of an international service-learning (ISL) initiative under development that involved a collaboration among a south-central Texas private university, a ministry of Catholic Sisters in Peru, a U.S. non-profit organization, and a Peruvian optometry school. Three collaborators were founded by the same religious order. An overlapping in mission and values influenced the context. By delving into the expectations of higher education and its pedagogical practices, ISL’s history and conceptualizations, and concepts of program planning and designing related to the fields of ISL and adult learning, this study presented significant program development aspects. Furthermore, the …

The authors compare the experiences of faculty and students at universities in Nepal and New Zealand following earthquakes in 2015 and 2011, respectively. Questionnaire data from students at Kathmandu University are analyzed and compared with previously published data from the University of Canterbury. Prominent themes are developed within the context of the cultural and socioeconomic differences between the two settings. Both similarities and contrasts are described, detailing scheduling changes, the role of students in their community’s response to natural disaster, flexibility of faculty, psychological trauma and treatment, and use of online-learning as a substitute for classroom learning. Lessons learned from …

Mortar Board: A Century Of Scholars, Chosen For Leadership, United To Serve, Susan R. Komives, Virginia N. Gordon, Jane A. Hamblin
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society has a unique place in the history of higher education and indeed in the history of the United States. Founded in 1918, with inaugural chapters at Cornell University, University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, and Swarthmore College, Mortar Board was the first national organization to honor senior college women. Before women had the right to vote in the United States, Mortar Board members were leading their society to prominence across the country. In a real sense, Mortar Board grew up with the US higher education system and grew in step with women’s …

Learner engagement is a critical aspect of education. While technology is rapidly developing to act in increasingly personalized, and in some dimensions human, ways, we submit that a human community may uniquely support increased student engagement. This research explored the characteristics and effects of the interactions and relationships that constitute three distinct communities in education and examined their influences on student engagement. In the format of a multiple-article dissertation I present three articles. The first article reviewed relevant literature about interactions, relationships, and communities in education. It focused specifically on online and blended contexts and their connections to student engagement. Interactions, …

Equipping Culturally Competent Students: The Development Of Cultural Intelligence In The Classroom And Beyond, Melody J. Harper
All Dissertations
In a globalized and multi-cultural world, it is increasingly important for universities to produce graduates with the intercultural competencies to excel in their professions, provide leadership in multi-national arenas and organizations, and thrive in diverse local communities. This quasi-experimental, quantitative study explored the effects of various methods of classroom instruction on participants' change in cultural competency as measured by the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS). The changes in CQS scores were analyzed across three groups: a traditional classroom setting, an experiential classroom setting, and an enhanced study abroad group. The results showed substantial and statistically significant change in both classroom groups, …

Look Again—Traditional Women As Nontraditional Students: A New Face In Higher Education, Candi Jones Newell
Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the experiences of 13 culturally traditional women who returned to higher education as nontraditional students. An individual unstructured interview, with guiding questions, was held with each woman. This provided the opportunity for these women to articulate their experience. The interviews were transcribed and interpreted using a synthesis of qualitative methods based upon Kvale's method. Seven themes emerged: (a) participants would tell a woman considering a return to school to "do it!" (b) participants saw spousal support as significant in their ability to return to school, (c) participants saw their families as generally supportive of their return to …

This study includes two papers that aimed to provide insights into the experiences of high-achieving Latinx and Native American college students studying science. We wanted to better understand factors that influence these students’ ability to develop a sense of identity that weaves together their hoped-for careers as scientists as well as their cultural identities. We looked at how they feel about working with mentors in science fields who were like them in a variety of ways. We found that many students (especially those with a stronger sense of cultural identity) valued working with mentors who were similar to them in …

Surviving And Thriving At A University In The United Kingdom, Roxanne S. Duvivier, Gina Oswald, Lindsey Steller, Kate Bumhoffer
Human Services Faculty Publications
While considerable research on college student surviving and thriving has been conducted in the United States, fewer studies exist that examine these phenomenon multinationally. This mixed methods study, conducted at a large multi-campus university in the United Kingdom, examines factors purported to contribute to college student retention and engagement in a British context. Data were collected and analysed in the five theme categories of belonging, student support services, academic engagement, decision-making and resilience. Significant differences were found in student engagement by metropolitan vs. suburban campus, and in levels of engagement in academic and student life by gender.
College Dropout To College Professor, Deborah L. Gochenaur, Rose I. Verbos
College Dropout To College Professor, Deborah L. Gochenaur, Rose I. Verbos
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Being a college dropout wasn’t something to be proud of; it just happened. Life doesn’t always turn out the way we want or expect. Yet, it is often how we deal with defeat that defines us – figuring out when to lick our wounds and when to come back fighting. It took a few years to redefine my dream, start a family, and seem to move forward, but the ache for more was always in the back of my mind. Could I succeed at something at which I had already failed? Going back to school at a community college at …

Impacts Of Monitoring And Evaluation, Active Roles Of Lecturers, Classroom Interaction, And Government Policy On Teaching Productivity, Achmad Qurtubi
BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi
Lecturers as university educators are main player and determinant of successful educational efforts. Their roles are getting challenged when their productivity are highlighted. They face challenges which come from three sources, i.e. university standards; (2) education measurement; (3) issue of balancing between government standards and higher education institutional plan. However, there is a gap that lecturers’ efforts in improving teaching productivity are rarely observed especially in higher education institutions. The purpose of this study is to determine whether programs that have been run by the institutions have achieved the expected goals. This study observes institutional preparation and evaluation to measure …

Leading In The Real World: Operationalizing A Power-Based Model Of Collaboration For Leadership Experiential Learning, Mariana J. Lebron, Filiz Tabak
Organization Management Journal
Using a power-based conceptual framework, we present a collaboration model to guide faculty and student affairs (SA) staff in working together to develop experiential learning assignments that help students apply leadership concepts to on-campus organizational problems. The PowerBased Student-Centered Collaboration Model (PSCM) consists of four stages through which faculty, SA staff, leadership course students, and student organization leaders operationalize their legitimate, coercive, expert, reward, and informational power in sharing resources for mutually beneficial student-centered learning experiences. Power structures provide coordinating mechanisms for information-exchange, decision-making, and role clarification in team-based collaborations. Using the PSCM, we developed a 6-week assignment Leading in …

OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Australia
PISA has established a profile of what 15-year-old students can do and what they are like as learners. Gaining an understanding about other aspects, including what they want to do in the future is another important goal of PISA. This report seeks to explore how students’ expectations for further education are measured in PISA 2015. It addresses educational expectations across countries and across Australian jurisdictions, as well as educational expectations for different demographic groups in Australia. It also considers changes in educational expectations for Australian students over time, and for different demographic groups in Australia.

The Hidden Curriculum Of Starting An Open-Access Online Journal: An Editor’S Perspective, Sydney Freeman Jr.
Journal of Research Initiatives
Starting a new academic journal is a scholarly undertaking that is not taught in graduate school. However, higher education professors may well find it necessary to engage in journal work during their careers. As available literature gives little direction for prospective journal founders and editors, this article provides a Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) account of a Senior Editor-in-Chief’s journey through the process of establishing a new academic journal. Challenges inherent to the process are discussed, and recommendations are provided for prospective editors.

Relationship Of Supplemental Instruction And Attitude Of Students Enrolled In College Algebra, Kele Anne Mckaig
OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers
The problem of this study was to determine the relationship of supplemental instruction on the attitudes of college algebra students at a Southeastern university. The population for this study consisted of college algebra students enrolled in M102 and M103 courses in the Summer 2018 semester. While M102 and M103 cover the same material, M103 requires mandatory tutoring in addition to the classroom instruction. A survey of these students provided data on their attitudes toward mathematics at the beginning and end of their college algebra course. The first research question of this study asked to what extent attitudes differ, if at …

Chinese Students In U.S. Universities: A Qualitative Study Of Cross-Cultural Learning Experiences, Transition And Adaptation, Josefina E. Oramas, Hagai Gringarten, Lloyd Mitchell
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
Chinese students represent the largest single group among international students enrolled in the U.S, and globalization has played an important role in impacting Chinese students’ perceptions of what it means to study abroad. According to The Wall Street Journal, there are 85 percent more international students enrolled today in U.S. schools than ten years ago, adding more than 35 billion dollars to the nation’s economy in 2015 (Belkin & Purnell, 2017). This qualitative study adds to the limited research available regarding Chinese students’ cross-cultural transition and academic adaptation to American universities (Kusek, 2015; Yan & Berliner, 2009). Findings add a …
