The Changing College Classroom: A View From Cart, Glenn Pavlicek, Sandra Faiman-Silva, Maxine Rawlins, Shu-Chen Tu

Bridgewater Review

Higher education, like many institutions in the United States, is undergoing profound change. At Bridgewater, faculty members are increasingly becoming aware that societal issues, computerization and the demands of a highly competitive economy require a reevaluation of the classroom and the process of learning. At a conference sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Research and Teaching in May, four Bridgewater faculty members and a librarian joined in a panel discussion to offer their perspectives on “the changing college classroom.”

Combining Service And Learning: A Comparison Study Of The Relationship Between A Classroom Sponsored Service Learning Initiative And The Moral, Civic And Intellectual Lives Of College Students, Timothy Patrick Leary

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a classroom sponsored community service initiative on students' moral judgment, commitment to civic and social responsibility, and mastery of academic course content. A multi-method approach was utilized to examine developmental and learning outcomes of students participating in two sections of a Philosophical Anthropology II course, both taught by the same instructor, offered at a small liberal arts college. Students in one section of the course participated in a structured service-Iearning experience of approximately 25 hours in length, while students in the other section were asked to complete a library …

A Model Part-Time Bachelor's Degree Program For Adults At California Public Research Institutions, Karen Jil Warn Edd Jan 1994

A Model Part-Time Bachelor's Degree Program For Adults At California Public Research Institutions, Karen Jil Warn Edd

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the opportunities available to adults for continuing their education part-time to complete a Bachelor's degree and to assess a California research institution's perception of part-time study. Adult student enrollments in postsecondary education have increased 114 percent between 1970 and 1985. Part-time student enrollments rose nearly 87 percent during the same time frame and part-time students now comprise approximately 42 percent of the enrollment in postsecondary education. California research institutions are typically still providing services for the traditional day-time student. There is a persistent resistance to change by faculty. Changing the way the …

What Do We Know About The Impact Of Field Based Programs On Students?, Janet Eyler, Dwight Giles Jr. Oct 1993

What Do We Know About The Impact Of Field Based Programs On Students?, Janet Eyler, Dwight Giles Jr.

Higher Education

The literature on field based education programs for undergraduates is voluminous, but surprisingly unhelpful in answering the most important question of all, "What difference does it make in the lives of students?" In this presentation we have focused on this largely unanswered question, first (1) examining the goals commonly held for such field experiential approaches as cooperative education, academic internships, field components of classes, and service learning then (2) discussing evidence for impact on students and finally (3) identifying critical gaps in our knowledge of how these programs affect students.

Teaming Up At Ucla: A Report To The Campus Outreach Opportunity League, Robert D. Shumer, Parvin Kassaie Jan 1993

Teaming Up At Ucla: A Report To The Campus Outreach Opportunity League, Robert D. Shumer, Parvin Kassaie

Higher Education

Do community service. This has been the charge of reports on post-secondary education for the past several years. From the Carnegie report (College: The Undergraduate Experience in Higher Education, 1987) to the passage of "human corps" legislation in California, efforts have been undertaken to expand the number of college students involved in service. Yet students have always done service. Boy Scouts, Key Clubs, Red Cross, fraternities and sororities, undergraduate student projects for the homeless, hungry, and illiterate have .been outlets for service for years. While so many service programs already exist, the real issue is: how do we get a …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Power Style, And Locus-Of-Control For Selected Academic Deans, Carla E. Warner Aug 1992

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Power Style, And Locus-Of-Control For Selected Academic Deans, Carla E. Warner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concept of locus of control, as an aspect of the human personality, has remained of interest to researchers since its identification by Julian Rotter in the 1960s. Beginning with the work of French and Raven in the 1950s, the concept of power and its interrelationship with leadership ability has also continued to be of interest to social scientists and educators. This study was completed in response to the lack of previous research on the relationship of locus of control to power style usage and preference. Four hundred and eighty academic deans from one hundred and nine Comprehensive II institutions …

Leadership In Policy Issue Networks: The New Community College Of Baltimore, Helen H. Bishop Edd May 1992

Leadership In Policy Issue Networks: The New Community College Of Baltimore, Helen H. Bishop Edd

Dissertations

The policy-making process is a complex human endeavor characterized by interactions among leaders and followers who do leadership by placing policy innovations on the political agenda and utilizing their resources to attempt change. If innovative change is accomplished, then the new policy must be implemented at the local level, in ways which may or may not reflect the intentions of those who desired the change, or those who created the new policy. This research focuses on an example of policy making in state government in the area of postsecondary education. The objectives of the study were to determine how coalitions …
