Optimizing University Campuses For Learning, Wellbeing And Equity: An Applied Study Of Higher Education Facilities Organizational Systems, Melissa Nergard
Optimizing University Campuses For Learning, Wellbeing And Equity: An Applied Study Of Higher Education Facilities Organizational Systems, Melissa Nergard
Theses and Dissertations
College and university campuses are designed and maintained by experts in facilities management and planning. What is lacking in these processes is expertise in learning environments and creating spaces that are healthy and inclusive. University organizational structures aid in the autonomy of academic freedom and the nimbleness of research endeavors but hinder operational effectiveness of the campus as a learning and research environment. A more integrated approach, which optimizes the knowledge on campus regardless of where it is housed, can mitigate the unintended conflicts that develop through the disparate approach to learning, equity, and wellbeing in the built environment. This …

“We Have To Get More Teachers To Help Our Kids”: Recruitment And Retention Strategies For Teacher Education Programs To Increase The Number Of Indigenous Teachers In Canada And Abroad, Laura Landertinger, Danielle Tessaro, Jean-Paul Restoule
Journal of Global Education and Research
This paper discusses the findings of a research study that gathered and analyzed recruitment and retention strategies employed by 50 teacher education programs (TEPs) in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia to increase the number of Indigenous teachers. It discusses several recruitment and retention strategies that were found to be successful in this regard, highlighting the importance of facilitating access, eliminating financial barriers, and offering Indigenous-centric programs.
Fighting For Education In A Globalized World: The Intersection Between Education Policy And Student Activism In Colombia And France, Caroline Magdalene Albacete
Fighting For Education In A Globalized World: The Intersection Between Education Policy And Student Activism In Colombia And France, Caroline Magdalene Albacete
Senior Theses
Access to quality education—the fourth UN Sustainable Development Goal—is one of the challenges that many countries around the globe have confronted. The types of policies governments choose to implement to address the issue, however, have begun to shift as globalization has intensified. Students, in turn, have responded to various changes in policy by creating movements that push for or against these policies. This thesis thus aims to describe the causal relationship between those policy shifts and student reactions by comparing educational policies in France and Colombia and student protest movements in both countries. The main factors analyzed include: 1.) accessibility …

Acknowledging, Supporting, And Retaining Native American Students In Institutions Of Higher Education, Andrea Johnson
Masters Projects
Research shows that Native American students are coming into four-year institutions of higher education unprepared and leaving without having completed their degrees. The goal of the project presented is to create a Native American student program that can be implemented on any college campus, called "Native Peoples, Native Students". This program spans the length of the academic year and includes events, orientation, resources, mentorship, alumni engagement and information for Native American students. The goal of the program is to address the current issues facing students who identify as Native American on college campuses. Considering the history of oppression of Native …

Syllabus: Equity, Elitism, And Public Higher Education, Katina Rogers, Matt Brim
Open Educational Resources
This is a syllabus for a mixed MA/PhD level course, "Equity, Elitism, and Public Higher Education," taught in Spring 2021 at the Graduate Center by Matt Brim and Katina Rogers.
Higher education can be a powerful engine of equity and social mobility. Yet many of the structures of colleges and universities—including admissions offices, faculty hiring committees, disciplinary formations, institutional rankings, and even classroom pedagogies and practices of collegiality—rely on tacit values of meritocracy and an economy of prestige. For public universities like CUNY this tension can be especially problematic, as structurally-embedded inequities undermine the institution’s democratizing mission and values. It …

“You Sound Like A Good Program Manager”: An Analysis Of Gender In Women’S Computing Life Histories, Rose K. Pozos, Michelle Friend
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Through the eyes of professional women in computing, we can better understand the impact of workplace structures, higher education pathways, and the particular closed nature of the tech industry. This study of women’s life histories contributes to the work of in-depth qualitative examinations of CS learning contexts and psychological studies investigating phenomena such stereotype threat which contextualize the experience of women in computing environments. Drawing inspiration from Margolis and Fisher’s work drawing the “blueprints” of the “boy’s clubhouse” of computing education [20], as well as McDermott and Webber’s analysis of when math learning occurs [22], we ask when, where, and …
How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler
How Will I Thrive? Developing Designer Professional Identity Among Undergraduate Communication Design Students, Denise Bosler
Education Doctorate Dissertations
A designer’s professional identity is constructed throughout a designer’s life and is developed through life experiences and education. While understanding the general importance of a professional identity is often clear to recent design graduates, developing it requires becoming self-aware of what traits constitutes designer professional identity (DPI). Kunrath, Cash and Yi-ling (2016) define DPI as the synthesis of personal attributes and design skills. However, the development of this full complement of DPI traits is often ignored and ill-supported in design education curriculum. A student’s DPI, if under-developed, can be a barrier to successfully transitioning from student to professional. Design educators …

Concealing In The Public Interest, Or Why We Must Teach Secrecy, Susan Maret
Secrecy and Society
Secrecy as the intentional or unintentional concealment of information is the subject of investigation within the humanities, social sciences, journalism, law and legal studies. However, the subject it is not widely taught as a distinct social problem within higher education. In this article, I report personal experience with developing and teaching a graduate level course on a particular type of secrecy, government secrecy, at the School of Information, San Jose State University. This article includes discussion on selecting course materials, creating assignments, and navigating controversial histories. This article also sets the stage to this special issue of Secrecy and Society …

Perceived Attributes Of Diffusion Of Innovation Theory As Predictors Of Postsecondary Faculty Adoption Of Text Expander Technology, Katherine Ruthann Mckinney
Perceived Attributes Of Diffusion Of Innovation Theory As Predictors Of Postsecondary Faculty Adoption Of Text Expander Technology, Katherine Ruthann Mckinney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Postsecondary faculty do not provide detailed, individualized, and timely feedback to students, although faculty and students consider feedback an integral aspect of higher education. Text expander technology, or software programs that automatically convert snippets of predetermined text into longer phrases, can aid postsecondary faculty in providing digital written feedback, but little quantitative research exists regarding postsecondary faculty adoption of text expander technology. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the perceived attributes of Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory that predict postsecondary faculty adoption of text expander technology. The research questions were related to the frequency at which postsecondary …
Colorism Experiences Of Non-White Women Leaders In Higher Education, Aimee Haynes
Colorism Experiences Of Non-White Women Leaders In Higher Education, Aimee Haynes
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
As the population of the United States becomes more diverse the ethnic makeup of postsecondary institutions expands. Women of color (WOC) represent a growing number within the academic community earning more postsecondary degrees then men and serve as leaders in higher education throughout the county. The increased presence of WOC inacademic positions of power, such as deans, directors, supervisors, tenured faculty, presidents, etc., indicate America’s progression towards inclusivity. However, colorism, a subset of racism favoring and advantaging lighter skin complexions and disadvantaging darker skin tones, exist as a predictor of socioeconomic status, educational attainment, martial capital, occupational, and interpersonal success …
Emancipatory And Controlling: Examining The Negotiation Of Masculinity-Centered Practices By Women's And Gender Equity Center Practitioners, Ashley M. Brown
Emancipatory And Controlling: Examining The Negotiation Of Masculinity-Centered Practices By Women's And Gender Equity Center Practitioners, Ashley M. Brown
Dissertations
Initiatives to understand and transform masculinity have increasingly emerged in higher education, calling attention to the consequences of dominant, masculine gender expectations that permeate throughout college campuses. These masculinity-centered practices in higher education encompass formalized, departmental initiatives for students, faculty, and/or staff that examine topics related to masculinity through educational workshops, speaker events, professional development sessions, dialogue spaces, and other efforts. While it is often assumed that these practices support the advancement of gender equity, scholars have theorized the ways in which this work can also lead to depoliticized efforts that may, in fact, reify patriarchal and other systems of …
Begin To Play: The Case For Play In Community Engagement In Higher Education, Naomi B. Roswell
Begin To Play: The Case For Play In Community Engagement In Higher Education, Naomi B. Roswell
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
Although little is written about the role of play in community engagement in higher education, professors and administrators intuitively grasp its value in building trust and democratizing spaces, but use games thinly. This paper acknowledges the challenges of developing effective community engagement partnerships and demonstrates how and why games based in Theater of the Oppressed deepen and enhance initiatives to dissolve town / gown divisions and enable collaborative knowledge generation. Through an analysis of literature reviews and interviews, this paper makes a case for deliberately incorporating games from Theater of the Oppressed (TO) - to advance community engagement initiatives by …

The History, Evolution, And Trends Of Academic Dishonesty: A Literature Review, Amy Zachek
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
Academic dishonesty is a murky problem without a commonly agreed upon solution in American higher education. It has a long-standing history in higher education but a short history in academic literature, it has evolved rapidly and longitudinally (McCabe & Trevino, 1996), and it has several easily apparent trends and others that the majority of researchers are in disagreement about. While traversing this perilous landscape of dichotomies, this paper will examine connections and gaps in the literature, make suggestions and recommendations for future study based off of these results, and examine the implications that these recommendations could have on higher education …
Decolonizing Approaches To Human Rights And Peace Education Higher Education Curriculum, Danielle Aldawood
Decolonizing Approaches To Human Rights And Peace Education Higher Education Curriculum, Danielle Aldawood
International Journal of Human Rights Education
While the project of decolonization within higher education has become important in recent years (Kester et al., 2019), human rights and peace education specifically have undergone critique (Coysh, 2014; Al-Daraweesh and Snauwaert, 2013; Barreto, 2013; Zembylas, 2018; Williams, 2017; Cruz and Fontan, 2014). This critique has focused on the delegitimization of non-Western epistemologies around peace and human rights and the reliance on Eurocentric structures of thought and power within curricular and pedagogical practices (Kester et al., 2019). The decolonization of academic human rights curricula is the primary focus of this research; through interviews and content analysis with U.S. human rights …

Civic Engagement Amid Civil Unrest: Haitian Social Scientists Working At Home, Nadège Nau
Civic Engagement Amid Civil Unrest: Haitian Social Scientists Working At Home, Nadège Nau
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Unlike many of the autoethnographic accounts in world anthropologies discourse, this study employs critical educational ethnography to both address the geopolitics of Haitian anthropology while also spotlighting an understudied group: university faculty. This study addresses: What are the conditions of academic labor for anthropology professors working in Haiti? Moreover, what is the price of being an anthropology professor at the School of Ethnology at the State University of Haiti (UEH), and how do professors add meaningful value to their labor through sacrifice, ingenuity, and civic engagement? Despite professors’ work-related challenges and Haiti’s severe “brain drain” levels, for many professors, their …

During the seminar, participants discovered concepts common across disciplines that enabled them to highlight core concepts in their own field in their courses. At the end, faculty participants were energized and …
First-Year Students In Summer Bridge: Improving Academic And Mathematical Success, Sonia Hussain
First-Year Students In Summer Bridge: Improving Academic And Mathematical Success, Sonia Hussain
University Honors Program Senior Projects
In the United States, a significant barrier that many students face as they enter college is a lack of preparation for credit-level classes, particularly in mathematics. There is widespread concern across the country about how to better support the large number of students enrolling in developmental mathematics courses. One approach some universities have implemented to address this challenge is to offer incoming freshmen the opportunity to participate in summer bridge programs to provide them with the support needed to successfully complete developmental coursework. This study investigates the mathematics and academic success of first-year students attending Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), a …

Perceptions Professor Have Toward Adults With Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder: A Causal-Comparative Study, Alexandria Vassallo
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine professors in higher education perceptions toward students with attention deficit hyperactive disorder. Further, considering Goffman’s theory of stigma, this researcher designed a study which examined perceptions of professor toward adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Therefore, this dissertation focused on using a quantitative causal-comparative research method to examine perceptions professors in higher education have toward adults with ADHD. This researcher examined the perceptions of professors who had undertaken coursework in ADHD or have a special education license to those who have not. Further, this researcher examined professors’ academic disciplines, grouping professors …
"There Is Enough Food On The Table": Religious Minority Students' Experiences With The Campus Spiritual Climate, Regina C. Schneider
"There Is Enough Food On The Table": Religious Minority Students' Experiences With The Campus Spiritual Climate, Regina C. Schneider
LSU Master's Theses
Within the last 30 years, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have been at much of the forefront of student affairs and higher education policy and practices. Issues regarding gender, race, and socioeconomic status have received much attention not only in education, but also in the greater landscape of the nation. Religious and spiritual minority students are a population that has only recently been considered in fostering a more inclusive and pluralistic college environment. Thus, there is a research gap involving religious/spiritual minority college students and their perceptions of the campus climate. Additionally, only a small pool of research addresses the …
“To Study The Self Is To Forget The Self”: Zen Lessons On Ego And Leadership In Higher Education, Jody Condit Fagan
“To Study The Self Is To Forget The Self”: Zen Lessons On Ego And Leadership In Higher Education, Jody Condit Fagan
Libraries
Theories of charismatic leadership present leadership as an influence process where part of the leader’s role is to attract followers through individual example and vision. Charismatic leadership acknowledges the potential dangers of narcissism in the leader and leader-obsession among their followers. Meanwhile, central tenets of Zen philosophy include that of non-attachment to self, interdependence of all beings, and impermanence. Interviews with four American Zen practitioner-leaders were analyzed for themes related to the influence of ego on leadership. This paper presents findings from the interviews, and discusses these along with observations from other Zen scholars and practitioners. The discussion is complemented …
Nuancing Interdisciplinarity: Between And Beyond Liberal Arts And Professional Education, Jose Eos Trinidad
Nuancing Interdisciplinarity: Between And Beyond Liberal Arts And Professional Education, Jose Eos Trinidad
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
In an environment of ever-increasing cost of higher education and a precarious economic market, students and families labor over the right “major.” Although many opt for technical and professional training, not a few still advocate for a liberal arts education. In this essay, I argue that interdisciplinarity—or the integration of two or more disciplines—can be present in both liberal arts and professional education although they have differing aims, bases, and means, depending on the general field. Interdisciplinarity in the liberal arts highlights humanistic questions, broad thinking, and understanding the whole. In technical professional education, it emphasizes practical problems, deep thinking, …
