Bridging Silos, Improving Systems, Deidre Johnson, Phillip Chung, Jennifer Schroeder, Judith Meyers
The Foundation Review
· Systems that provide services to children tend to operate in silos; foundations can play a role in helping bridge these silos by supporting “systems building” efforts.
· Using examples from two foundations and two communities, this article explores the challenges and lessons learned in systems building work.
· Educating grantees and other community members about systems and systems building is a critical first step in the process.
· Supporting systems building requires an iterative process and foundations should continuously reinforce the importance of systems building activities.
Understanding Mesosystemic Influences On Reported Health Among Rural Low-Income Women: A Structural Equation Analysis, Tiffany Wigington
Understanding Mesosystemic Influences On Reported Health Among Rural Low-Income Women: A Structural Equation Analysis, Tiffany Wigington
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
While ensuring access to health insurance and health care services is important, emerging research indicates that individual health and well-being result from a complex array of environmental, social, and psychological factors. The delineation of how factors of health and well-being unfold and impact rural low-income women is particularly salient for social workers who provide services to rural residents and who work within a rural context. Utilizing components from the ecological systems perspective, this study explored how the factors associated with health risk influenced reported health and mesosystemic processes among rural low-income women. This sample (n=304) for this study was drawn …

Contraception: Securing Feminism’S Promise, Naomi R. Cahn, June Carbone
Contraception: Securing Feminism’S Promise, Naomi R. Cahn, June Carbone
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This paper traces the history of attempts to restrict contraception, the legal events securing widespread access to contraception and their importance to a generation of college-aged women, the short-lived nature of the consensus that produced them, and the potential of the issue to serve as a rallying point for a revitalized feminism. It explores the hypocrisy of a system that, whatever its values, makes reproductive autonomy readily available for the affluent and the sophisticated and increasingly beyond the reach of the most vulnerable. Finally, it considers the potential of contraception as a reframing device, capable of exposing the hypocrisy of …
The Development And Evaluation Of A Child Maltreatment Reporting Training Program For Mandated Mental Health Professionals, Krisann Marie Alvarez
The Development And Evaluation Of A Child Maltreatment Reporting Training Program For Mandated Mental Health Professionals, Krisann Marie Alvarez
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Despite a legal mandate to report suspected child maltreatment, the literature has consistently reported a failure by mandated professionals to report suspected maltreatment. Lack of knowledge regarding child maltreatment, reporting requirements and possible consequences of reporting have been cited as impediments to reporting. Previous research has recommended the development of training programs to address these hindrances. However, empirically validated training programs specific to the reporting of child maltreatment in mental health professionals have yet to be developed. Therefore, this study is the first to examine the efficacy of a child maltreatment reporting training program which addresses knowledge of child maltreatment …

Research shows that many disparities in health and well-being are rooted in early childhood. These disparities reflect gaps in access to services, unequal treatment, adverse congenital health conditions, and exposures in the early years linked to elevated community and family risks.1 Early health risks and conditions can have long-range implications for physical, emotional, and intellectual development as well as health. Their contribution to disparities in health status, disabilities, and educational achievement is well documented.2 But many risks can be addressed in the early years, starting with quality prenatal care and interventions in the earliest stages of life. Thus, literally, reducing …
