This dissertation explores the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), racism, health habits, and therapy engagement on cardiovascular disease (CVD) among Black adults. This study builds on the Biopsychosocial Model and Allostatic Load Theory to examine how trauma, racism, and health habits influence cardiovascular health outcomes in the African American population. Through a quantitative analysis, this study investigates whether ACEs, experiences of racism, engagement in health habits, and participation in therapy contribute to the development or mitigation of CVD in Black adults. My capstone is an audio and data project focusing on voting rights for people with disabilities in the United States — specifically how accessibility in voting has changed over time and how it rights have been violated in the recent past. The audio component is a podcast episode I co-produced with another student. It tells the story of how Kathy Collins and Dr. Sharon McLennon Wier, two disability and voting rights activists, have voted over the years, leading up to the 2024 election. Factors Associated With Delaying Medical Care: Cross-Sectional Study Of Nebraska Adults, Kendra Ratnapradipa, Snehal Jadhav, Josiane Kabayundo, Hongmei Wang, Lisa C. Smith

BACKGROUND: Delayed medical care may result in adverse health outcomes and increased cost. Our purpose was to identify factors associated with delayed medical care in a primarily rural state.

METHODS: Using a stratified random sample of 5,300 Nebraska households, we conducted a cross-sectional mailed survey with online response option (27 October 2020 to 8 March 2021) in English and Spanish. Multiple logistic regression models calculated adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals.

RESULTS: The overall response rate was 20.8% (n = 1,101). Approximately 37.8% of Nebraskans ever delayed healthcare (cost-related 29.7%, transportation-related 3.7%), with 22.7% delaying care in the …

Between the ages of 18-21 years old, youth and young adults make the transition from pediatric to adult health care. While it may be an easy and seamless transition for some, that is not always the case, especially for youth and young adults with disabilities. Tools For Healthy Living: Lessons Learned About Program Efficacy, Youth Knowledge, And Youth Engagement, Sharon Gray, Jennifer Cushman, Miriah Kelly, Mary Margaret Gaudio, E. Jean Gubbins

Journal of Extension

Youth in grades 4 to 6 were presented with healthy living topics through a two cycle, 11-week 4-H after school curriculum designed for low income, urban populations. Pre- and post-surveys were used to measure knowledge of healthy homes topics such as mold and moisture, lead poisoning, pests, asthma triggers, smoking, and food safety. Daily journaling activities designed to measure youth engagement also added to the mixed data set. Lessons learned about program efficacy, youth knowledge, and youth engagement are presented.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, population surveys revealed increased levels of anxiety and depression, while findings from large-scale population data analyses have revealed mixed findings with respect to the mental health consequences for children and youth. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the well-being and health-compromising behaviors of adolescents (12–18 years) previously referred for mental health services. Data were collected (pre-pandemic n = 3712; pandemic n = 3197) from mental health agencies across Ontario, Canada using the interRAI Child and Youth Mental Health assessment. Yoga for All Movement is a non-profit organization that makes yoga and mindfulness available to marginalized communities. The agency collaborates with organizations to provide needed services to the families of the Live Oak and Emerald Bay communities. The macro level problem is that children and youth in Santa Cruz County are experiencing the negative effects of being isolated at home during the COVID pandemic. The micro level problem is that the children and youth of the Live Oak and Emerald Bay communities are facing barriers to social development opportunities and lack knowledge on available resources to help them.
