Health, Education And Children’S Rights: A Comparability Analysis Of Kenya And Brazil, Charlette Lopez
Health, Education And Children’S Rights: A Comparability Analysis Of Kenya And Brazil, Charlette Lopez
Dissertations and Theses
Developing adequate health care and education systems has been an ongoing struggle for the governments of both Kenya and Brazil. Despite moderate improvements in health and education statistics for both of these countries, there is clear evidence that these states will have to be actively engaged in order to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. Kenya and Brazil may differ in geographical location, history, culture, and socioeconomic status, but both countries are congruent in the challenges they face to provide sufficient access to quality health care and educational resources to the upcoming generations of children who are being failed by …
Environmental Factors Associated With Body Mass Index Among Long Haul Truck Drivers, Charlotte Hughes Huntley
Environmental Factors Associated With Body Mass Index Among Long Haul Truck Drivers, Charlotte Hughes Huntley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2009–2010, the prevalence of obesity among U.S. adults was 40%, and the prevalence was 69% among long haul truck drivers. Researchers have not established a clear relationship between working environment and weight among truck drivers. This quantitative cross-sectional study, using an ecological framework, evaluated the relationship between the working environment (sleep performance, food choices, driving environment, and activity level) and weight severity (e.g., body mass index [BMI]) among long haul truck drivers. One hundred and twenty six adults (46 + 10, years of age), including both genders (male = 97 and females = 29) completed an online questionnaire evaluating …

Graphic design is a problem-solving field. A client or company tasks a designer with a problem, and to solve that problem the designer uses 2D fundamentals and technology. As a designer, one must carefully listen to the client to understand their needs before making design decisions. While graphic designers are responsible for creating stunning visuals for both print and digital media, one of the most important aspects of graphic design is branding. Broadly speaking, branding is the process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product or service in a consumers mind. Through branding, the designer aims …

Sugar In School Breakfasts: A School District's Perspective, Jennifer G. Lengyel Ms, Rdn, Ld, Nan Cramer Rdn, Ld, Amanda Oceguera Ms, Rdn, Ld, Lana Pigao Ma, Houston Independent School District, Nutrition Services Department
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
A recent series of emails and phone calls from parents concerned about the sugar content of Houston Independent School District’s school breakfasts revealed that a new issue had risen to the surface. This prompted us to look closely at the sugar content of our breakfast items. School districts participating in the National School Breakfast Program follow a strict set of nutritional regulations set forth by the USDA under the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act (HHFKA) of 2010 in response to the childhood obesity epidemic. HHFKA made significant changes to the breakfast meal pattern, but did not set standards for the …

Community Food Security Strategies: An Exploratory Study Of Their Potential For Food Insecure Households With Children, Michelle L. Kaiser, Kareem Usher, Colleen Spees
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
This research sought to explore nutrition and related health issues of 151 households with children who participated in a survey addressing food access, food security, nutrition, health, food provisioning strategies, and barriers to optimal food consumption. This study explored the potential use of community food security strategies as a tool to address public health concerns through increasing fruit and vegetable intake by improving access to affordable healthy foods. Poor diet, stress, and food insecurity impacts adults and children in terms of cognitive development, mental health, and risk for costly chronic diseases. This research contextualized consumer responses within a contemporary policy …

Physical Activity And Aging Research: A Bibliometric Analysis, A.M. Müller, P. Ansari, N. Ale Ebrahim, S. Khoo
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Physical activity and aging research has burgeoned in the past few decades. Despite the increase in scholarly publications no attempts have been made to summarize the publication landscape and to identify works that had great impact to physical activity and aging research. We conducted a bibliometric analysis and collected publication data from 1980 to February 6, 2015 in the Web of Science Core Collection. Of the overall 9,935 publications most were published after 2007 and almost 60% were in the category of Geriatrics and Gerontology or Sport Sciences. Highly cited publications (n = 45) were mostly authored by researchers from …
Human Capital Development And Parental Investment In India, Orazio P. Attanasio, Costas Meghir, Emily Nix
Human Capital Development And Parental Investment In India, Orazio P. Attanasio, Costas Meghir, Emily Nix
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We estimate production functions for cognition and health for children aged 1-12 in India, based on the Young Lives Survey. India has over 70 million children aged 0-5 who are at risk of developmental deficits. The inputs into the production functions include parental background, prior child cognition and health, and child investments, which are taken as endogenous. Estimation is based on a nonlinear factor model, based on multiple measurements for both inputs and child outcomes. Our results show an important effect of early health on child cognitive development, which then becomes persistent. Parental investments affect cognitive development at all ages, …

Human Capital Development And Parental Investment In India, Orazio P. Attanasio, Costas Meghir, Emily Nix
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We estimate production functions for cognition and health for children aged 1-12 in India, where over 70 million children aged 0-5 are at risk of developmental deficits. The inputs into the production functions include parental background, prior child cognition and health, and child investments. We use income and local prices to control for the endogeneity of investments. We find that cognition is sensitive to investments throughout the age range we consider, while health is mainly affected by early investments. We also find that inputs are complementary, and crucially that health is very important in determining cognition. Our paper contributes in …

An Examination Of Psychological Climate Linking Mechanisms Across The Strategic Priorities Of Health And Stress, Alec Munc
All Dissertations
Given that employee health and well-being represent a significant source of financial costs for organizations, this dissertation seeks to address some of the pathways through which organizational efforts to improve physical and mental health may operate. This study drew from a model of safety climate (Neal & Griffin, 2000) to propose that psychological climate exerts in influence on employee health and well-being through the joint moderators of knowledge/motivation and behaviors. The model also extended beyond the typical climate linking mechanisms to include moderators both individual (behavioral activation & behavioral inhibition systems) and contextual (workplace physical exposure). Using a two-wave prospective …

Postcolonialism And The Marshallese Diaspora: Structural Violence And Health In The Marshallese Community In Springdale, Arkansas, Alexander J. Hirata
Master's Theses
Despite moving to the United States for better healthcare, among other benefits, Marshallese Compact of Free Association (COFA) migrants residing in Springdale, Arkansas continue to face similar acute health problems as Marshallese living in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and often without access to health services. These problems include high rates of noncommunicable diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and thyroid cancer, as well as rare conditions such as Hansen’s Disease.
To research this, I studied the limited texts surrounding the Marshallese diaspora, as well as relevant bodies of literature: postcolonialism, Pacific migration theory, and global health and …

Journal of Extension
Consumers want timely, research-based information available online. The project objective was to develop a user-friendly nutrition and health website for Colorado Extension consumers. An electronic survey (n=381) was administered to current and potential Extension consumers to understand their: use of the Web and electronic devices; topics of interest; and preferred mode of information delivery. Results, in conjunction with best practices for website usability and health literacy, were used to develop the Live Eat Play Colorado website. Audience-centered websites with content packaged in small doses and delivered via multiple modalities may enhance reach and use of university and Extension resources.
Missed Opportunities: Public Health Disaster Management In Canada, Lisa Gorman, Christopher Stoney
Missed Opportunities: Public Health Disaster Management In Canada, Lisa Gorman, Christopher Stoney
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Three recent Canadian public health crises present an illustration of both the opportunities for reform and the challenges that may impede progress and public health renewal in federalist nations. While the three crises examined exposed serious flaws in emergency preparedness and fuelled demands for vital public health reform, evidence indicates that fundamental challenges have not been addressed and may have even heightened over the last decade given a move to “open federalism” and the significant fiscal impacts of ongoing austerity measures. With future pandemics inevitable, we identify the missed opportunities to optimize Canada’s emergency response capacity and procedures and examine …
On Feeding The 10 Billion, Patricia Boling
On Feeding The 10 Billion, Patricia Boling
Dawn or Doom Conference
It is commonplace to encounter people close to agriculture in Indiana worrying about how we will produce enough food to feed the projected 10 billion people who will inhabit the earth by 2050. But the assumption that Indiana needs to become even more productive and figure out how to turn out even more of what it does best, corn and soy beans, begs the question, what kind of food are we producing, and how will producing more of it benefit a rapidly increasing world population? We Hoosiers are incredibly productive, but our agricultural output is used primarily to create animal …

The Effects Of Parent-Adolescent Communication And Parenting Style On The Physical Activity And Dietary Behaviors Of Latino Adolescents, Dianna Mary Boone
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The obesity epidemic among children and adolescents has been growing rapidly over the past 10 years, particularly in Latino children. Multiple researchers have found support for positive associations between parent-child communication and healthy nutrition and exercise behaviors. The present study examined the relations between parent-adolescent communication and parenting style and the dietary and exercise behaviors of Latino adolescents. The study included 79 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years and their parents (100% are Latino). Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to determine which parenting style and communication variables are significantly associated with adolescents’ dietary and physical …

Coping With Racial Discrimination: The Impact Of Substance Use, Emotional Eating, And Emotional Support On Mental And Physical Health, Maurice Endsley, Jr.
Dissertations
Racial discrimination is a likely contributor to disparate health outcomes for African-American and Hispanic-Americans. The current study elaborates on previous research by assessing the impact of three coping variables, substance use, emotional eating, and social support, which may explain the relationship between racial discrimination and poorer perceptions physical functioning and three health maladies, including hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, the coping responses were hypothesized to serve as protective factors against the development of depression and anger symptoms. A total of 424 Hispanic, African-American participants between the ages of 18 and 65 completed an online survey. A six variable model …

What Difference Does It Make? An Essay Review Of Beyond Versus: The Struggle To Understand The Interaction Of Nature And Nurture; James Tabery; Mit Press: Cambridge, Ma, 2014, Peter J. Taylor
Working Papers on Science in a Changing World
Beyond versus makes its contribution to the thriving industry of books that clarify or recast nature-nurture issues through seven conceptual moves. The first is to posit a divide between sociological and philosophical inquiry. As Tabery depicts them, commentators on the science invoked in nature-nurture debates often focus on the racist or other political views of disputants or on their flawed understanding of scientific concepts. Tabery, in contrast, as a philosopher of science, explains past and present disagreements as stemming from “a disagreement concerning how explanation works in science.” (The other moves include explanatory and terminological divides, connecting associations to mechanisms, …

Essays On Gender, Ethnicity, And Health In The United States And Turkey, Tunay Oguz
Economics ETDs
This dissertation is composed of three studies examining barriers to health and healthcare that affect individuals on the basis of their race, ethnicity, and gender. The first study examines access to care disparities between non-Hispanic whites and Hispanics. I find that observed characteristics explain all of the disparities in access to care between these two groups, a marked change from a decade ago when characteristics explained only 65 percent. However, disparities in access to care between women and men remain unexplained even when differences in their attitudes and beliefs regarding healthcare are controlled for, especially for Hispanic men and women. …

Engaging San Francisco’S Western Addition In A Community Needs Assessment: A Field Work Report, Bridget Walsh-Dahlberg
Master's Projects and Capstones
San Francisco’s Western Addition is a neighborhood steeped in a history of discriminative policies and actions. Today, while the Western is a vibrant community, it continues to feel the effects of the historic discriminatory practices. This is evident in the disparities seen across many indicators, including: educational success and attainment; health; employment; and housing opportunities. Engage San Francisco, an initiative born from the University of San Francisco’s Leo T. McCarthy for Public Service and Common Good seeks to help improve the lives and success of children, youth and families in the Western Addition through community identified needs. Through campus-community relationships …

Fungal Communities in Oral Health and Disease
Amanda K. Dupuy, PhD
University of Connecticut, [2015]
With advances in, and cost reduction of next generation sequencing technologies, assessing the presence of microbes in host niches in healthy and diseased states has become a more feasible task. However, these studies are often only limited to bacterial characterization, ignoring other important community members such as fungi, viruses, and protists. The research presented here begins to fill this gap by creating a roadmap for fungal community analysis. With fungal outbreaks on the rise, it is essential that the fungal kingdom is included in future …

The Ills Of Empire: Managing Health And Populations Across The British Atlantic World, 1707-1834, Tristan Tomlinson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation explores the development during the long eighteenth century of modern approaches to governing society through the management of the health and conduct of laboring populations: particularly slaves, sailors, soldiers, and the urban poor. Scholars generally study these groups separately. I argue, however, that their roles as providers of crucial, often coerced labor linked them in the eyes of social and political authorities. Further, members of these populations had in common poverty, heavy labor, and difficult living and working conditions, all of which made them seem especially and similarly vulnerable to health threats. Authorities--whether government officials, naval officers, or …
