Health Disparity In Preventive Care Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Loveday E. Nwobilor Jan 2017

Health Disparity In Preventive Care Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Loveday E. Nwobilor

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The roles of immigration status in preventive health care services among Nigerian immigrants in the United States were investigated in this quantitative, cross-sectional survey study. About 260,724 Nigerian immigrants reside in the Unites States, but many do not complete lifesaving preventive health services such as immunization and screening, a major factor contributing to the rise in the cost of healthcare resultant from their use of emergency room services. This study investigated the extent to which immigration status independently explains the relationship between health disparities and risks in non-completion of preventive health care among Nigerian immigrants in the United States by …

Teaching Health Law From A Social-Ecological Perspective, Lindsay Wiley Jan 2017

Teaching Health Law From A Social-Ecological Perspective, Lindsay Wiley

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

I started teaching health law relatively recently-in the fall of 2010, just after the Affordable Care Act ("ACA") was enacted, but before much of it had been implemented. This timing has been a blessing because I started with a fresh slate rather than adding the ACA on top of a previously developed course. It has also been a curse, but ultimately I appreciate that I started teaching the course at a time when the ACA was under constant threat. The ever-evolving nature of health law means that health law teachers must always bear in mind a goal that applies to …

Ready, Print, Fire! Regulating The 3d-Printing Revolution, Joseph J. Pantella Iv

Journal of Law, Technology, & the Internet

"This Article argues that governments ought to proactively consider preemptive legislative or regulatory actions regarding 3D printing. To accomplish this objective this Article looks at the concepts of “permissionless innovation” and the “precautionary principle.” These concepts represent opposing ends of the regulatory spectrum; the former promoting a “wait-and-see” approach while the latter promotes a preemptive or preventative approach to government regulation. After defining these terms the Article will describe the characteristics of technologies that lend themselves either to permissionless innovation or to the precautionary principle. It will provide a few specific areas where policies of each type have been employed, …

Lgbtq-Inclusive Sexuality Education In Montana Public High Schools: An Assessment Of The Needs Of Health Enhancement Teachers, Andrew G. Johnson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

BACKGROUND

LGBTQ youth face many unique health challenges. Rates of depression and suicide are exponentially higher for LGBTQ youth than for their heterosexual, cisgender peers. Rates of HIV and STI infection are rising among this demographic. Comprehensive sexuality education has demonstrated the potential to address some of these health challenges. Specifically, it has been shown to delay the onset of sexual intercourse, and to reduce pregnancy and transmission rates of HIV and STIs among youth. Several studies have looked at LGBTQ-inclusive sexuality education from the perspective of LGBTQ students, but few have looked at this issue from the perspective of …

The Adequacy And Perceived Impact Of Nigeria's Health Policy, Kennedy Magoma Ongwae Jan 2017

The Adequacy And Perceived Impact Of Nigeria's Health Policy, Kennedy Magoma Ongwae

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

From 2004 to 2015, the health sector in Nigeria was substantially underfunded despite the existence of a federal health policy committing 15% of the national budget to health care financing. The purpose of this narrative and phenomenological study was to explore the nature and significance of economic claims made in this policy. The central research question examined the extent to which these economic claims were perceived to be realistic, attainable, and successful in meeting their intended policy objectives and impact. The study's conceptual framework combined Kingdon's ambiguity and multiple streams theory, Roe's narrative policy analysis, and Skocpol's policy feedback theory. …

Rural Haitian Women's Experiences With Poor Health Through Poverty, Geralda Felix

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

People living in rural Haiti lack access to basic health care services due to poverty. Rural poverty in Haiti particularly affects women's health because Haiti has had the highest maternal mortality and infant mortality rates in the Americas, in addition to some of the worst health statistics in the Western Hemisphere. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to cultivate a greater understanding of the poverty factors that affect access to health care services specifically among poor women living in rural Haiti. This study was based on the social ecological model for population health development, theorizing that a person's health …

Contextualizing The Relationship Between Culture And Puerto Rican Health: Towards A Place-Based Framework Of Minority Health Disparities, Giovani Burgos, Fernando I. Rivera, Marc A. Garcia Jan 2017

Contextualizing The Relationship Between Culture And Puerto Rican Health: Towards A Place-Based Framework Of Minority Health Disparities, Giovani Burgos, Fernando I. Rivera, Marc A. Garcia

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In both the culture of poverty literature and the acculturation literature, Puerto Ricans are portrayed in negative terms. The culture of poverty framework attributes Puerto Rican poverty to the mental, behavioral, and moral pathology of Puerto Rican individuals and to Puerto Rican culture. Similarly, outdated acculturation frameworks also trace the poor health of immigrants and racialized minorities, such as Puerto Ricans, to equivalent perceived deficiencies. In this paper, we argue that both the culture of poverty and acculturation frameworks are two pillars of the White Racial Frame (Feagin 2009) that sustains racial inequality in the United States. To build our …

Biblical Foundations For Nutrition And An Abundant Life, Elizabeth Snyder, M.A. Dec 2016

Biblical Foundations For Nutrition And An Abundant Life, Elizabeth Snyder, M.A.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to look at what the Bible says about the significance of nutrition, its effect on health, and the benefits of a Christian-worldview on nutritional wellbeing. With the help of the Holy Spirit, nutrition teachers need to connect the science with the Biblical foundation God has given us in His word. While it is crucial to remember that salvation is through Christ alone, it is wise to recognize the connection between diet and frontal lobe function, where analytical, moral decisions are made. Studying and understanding what the Bible says about the original diet, clean vs. …

Behavioural Mhealth In Developing Countries: What About Culture? / Andre Matthias Müller, A.M. Müller

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Behavioural health in many developing countries (Lachat et al., 2013) one could suggest to simply make use of infrastructure that is already available – the mobile technology infrastructure. This seems sensible considering that modern mobile technology has reached almost every person on our planet. Additionally, the digital divide between developed and developing countries is closing and in 2016 95% of the global population has access to a mobile phone network while the number of mobile broadband subscriptions grows rapidly especially in developing countries (International Telecommunication Union, 2016). Mobile technology ownership is also not limited to any specific demographic because it …

Secondary Analysis Of Morbidity Data From A Rural Haitian Village., Emma Karin Draluck Nov 2016

Secondary Analysis Of Morbidity Data From A Rural Haitian Village., Emma Karin Draluck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with most of the population surviving on $1 per day. Health outcomes among Haitians are poor, with a life expectancy 16 years less than the US. The majority of health research in Haiti has been narrow, focusing on specific issues like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, and cholera. Unfortunately, this has resulted an incomplete understanding of health in Haiti. This study aims to fill this gap by describing the most common health complaints, how they differ by age, sex, and temporality, and if there are associations between these health issues and environmental …
