Exploring The Cultural Perceptions Of Physical Activity Among Transnational Nigerian Immigrants, Kelechi D. Ibe-Lamberts, Daudet Ilunga Tshiswaka, Abi Fapohunda
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Background: Transnational Nigerian Immigrants, as other Transnational African Immigrants, are a subset of African immigrants with the unique ability to sustain multi-national ties. These ties could potentially affect health behavior choices and participation in physical activity. Physical Activity has the potential to improve health and prevent chronic diseases; however, there is a lack of literature regarding physical activity and its determinants within the Transnational African Immigrant population in general. This study investigated the cultural factors that shape Transnational Nigerian Immigrants’ perceptions and attitudes towards physical activity.
Methods: Semi-structured, individual interviews supported by photo-elicitation were conducted on 24 Transnational …
The Effect Of Various Vinegars On Infectious Diseases And Body Metabolism, Alexandria Hutchins
The Effect Of Various Vinegars On Infectious Diseases And Body Metabolism, Alexandria Hutchins
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Regular vinegar and apple cider vinegar have historically been used as home remedies to cure illness and diseases; however, not enough empirical research has been done to substantiate these assertions. This thesis will discuss the different ways that various vinegar forms affect one’s body metabolism, and the effect that they have on infectious diseases. This is an important topic to examine because of the growing number of infectious diseases. Vinegar contains polyphenols, which display antioxidant qualities in the body. Polyphenols found in the acetic acid of vinegar also inhibit microbial growth. This microbial growth is usually controlled by antimicrobials; however …

Nutrition Education For The Underserved Youth Within The Greater Twin Cities Area Through The Insports Foundation, Paige D. Deters, Allison Kaper, Maura Romanshek
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has been examined that poor access to nutritious foods and limited opportunities for physical activity is prevalent among children from underserved families. These deficiencies contribute to increasing childhood obesity rates and emphasize the need for early interventions. Establishing nutritional literacy and understanding the importance of an active lifestyle in early childhood can lead to long-term health benefits and reduction in chronic disease later in life (HHS & USDA, 2015; Tsai et al., 2011; Wang et al., 2011). The InSports Foundation serves as a comprehensive non-profit organization that addresses many of these issues by providing children from underserved families with …

International college students may be at risk for suffering from food insecurity and poor health. The purposes of this study were to: 1) determine if the household adult food security status (HAFSS) differs between undergraduate and graduate international students (INSTUD) attending the University of Mississippi (UM); 2) establish if a statistically significant relationship exists between health (physical functioning (PF) , role limitations due to physical health (RLPH), role limitations due to emotional problems (RLEP), energy/fatigue (EF), emotional well-being (EWB), social functioning (SF), pain (P), and general health (GH) and HAFSS; 3) assess if health differs between INSTUD living in food …
Prevalence Of Chronic Disease, Associated Factors, And Health Related Quality Of Life Among Wesleyan Clergy, Angi May Mook
Prevalence Of Chronic Disease, Associated Factors, And Health Related Quality Of Life Among Wesleyan Clergy, Angi May Mook
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Clergy believe they have been called to be healthy and role models of good health. However, epidemiological evidence supports that clergy are currently exhibiting higher rates of chronic diseases and associated factors such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension compared to the general population. Prior studies of clergys health are limited because the few available studies are denomination specific, limiting generalizability to the other denominations who have differing theology and beliefs. The Wesleyan denomination has not been formally studied. The gap in literature, therefore, creates a need for baseline information specific to the Wesleyan clergy. This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence …
Cultivating Cultural Competence To Address Childhood Obesity In Ethnic Minority Youth, Tia Knight-Forbes
Cultivating Cultural Competence To Address Childhood Obesity In Ethnic Minority Youth, Tia Knight-Forbes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity is an increasingly prevalent health issue, especially among children who live in high poverty, low income, and low education areas that lack needed resources and health care to promote quality of life. African American youth have a higher rate of obesity than other populations. The purpose of this project was to address an identified gap in practice by improving health care professionals' ability to provide culturally competent care to African American youth. An educational intervention framed by the Purnell model for cultural competence was developed to address the question, Will cultural competency staff education improve knowledge to prevent and …

Preventing Obesity And Type 2 Diabetes In Immigrant Populations, Maxwell K. Chikuta
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity-related diseases have been increasing in African immigrants throughout the United States. Although research has been done to identify risk factors associated with many ethnic groups in the United States, only a few studies exist that explore obesity and type 2 diabetes diseases among Central African immigrants. The conceptual framework for this qualitative case study was social constructivism and the health belief model. The primary research question addressed the potential underlying causes for an increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes among Central African Immigrants. The secondary research questions explored how culture, illiteracy, and religion contribute to the problem of …

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Athletes in combat sports undergo rapid changes in body weight prior to competition in order to gain a size advantage over their opponent. However, these large weight changes with concomitant high-intensity exercise training create poor lipid profiles and high levels of oxidative stress, which can be detrimental to health and sport performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of the nutritional supplement octacosanol to combat the physiological detriments that occur in taekwondo players during rapid weight loss with high-intensity exercise training. Methods: A total of 26 male taekwondo players were randomly divided into 2 groups: …
Healthy Skepticism: The Relationship Between Funding Source And Conclusion In Nutrition-Related Scientific Articles On Saturated Fat, Lili Muskal
CMC Senior Theses
Recently published scientific articles have led to mixed nutritional advice on dietary saturated fatty acids. Lesser et. al (2007) identified that mixed conclusions in scientific articles on sweetened beverages might be attributed industry funding, as articles funded by the beverage industry are four to eight times more likely to report conclusions in favor of the sponsor’s products. This thesis applies Lesser’s methods to determine whether industry funding influences the inconsistent conclusions on saturated fatty acids. This thesis analyzes 100 articles on foods high in dietary saturated fatty acids. While studies with food industry funding are more likely to produce favorable …
Alleviating Poverty In Sub-Saharan Africa, Owen Dubeck
Alleviating Poverty In Sub-Saharan Africa, Owen Dubeck
CMC Senior Theses
While most of the world has been able to dramatically reduce extreme poverty rates, Sub-Saharan Africa has failed to do so and is the only region in the world with more people living in extreme poverty than thirty years ago. This thesis will develop a policy framework for alleviating poverty by drawing from countries that are performing surprisingly well and poorly in the region. The thesis concludes with an analysis of whether education, health, or agricultural sectors should be receiving more or less funding based on expected rates of return and the feasibility of policy successes.

Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman
Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The practice of gleaning began as a way for the poor to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. Changes in societal ideas about private property as well as a shift toward a neoliberal style of governance have caused gleaning to become what it is today: a practice primarily undertaken by charitable organizations, nonprofits, and church groups who then donate their bounty to local food banks, providing fresh produce to the food insecure. In modern society, gleaning is often held up as a single solution to the problems of food insecurity, poor nutrition, and food waste. This thesis complicates that …

Direct observation data of health-promoting practices were …
Public Health Nurses’ Perceptions Of High School Dropout Rates As A Public Health Issue, Maria Wallace
Public Health Nurses’ Perceptions Of High School Dropout Rates As A Public Health Issue, Maria Wallace
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Education is one of the strongest predictors of health, and well-being. Early termination of education can lead to poorer health, shorter lifespans, and increased stress on the healthcare system. Improving overall high school graduation rates has been debated and discussed by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Ministry of Education, however, there is a paucity of research on increased graduation rates as they relate to public health in the Canadian context. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of liaison public health nurses (PHNs) who worked directly with the TDSB regarding their roles …

The Bioarchaeology Of The Tugalo Site (9st1): Diet, Disease, And Health Of The Past, Nompumelelo Beryl Hlophe
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Tugalo site is a prehistoric and early historic Native American site located in northeast Georgia along the upper Savannah River basin, near the junction of Toccoa Creek and the Tugalo River. According to archaeological materials analyzed from the site it was occupied from ca. A.D. 1100 to 1600 (Anderson et al. 1995). Although archaeological investigations of the site revealed basic characteristics of its chronology and architecture, very little analysis and reporting of the skeletal remains from Tugalo has been completed. By analyzing data collected by Williamson (1998) concerning the age and sex of the burials, the presence or absence …

Scholarly Works
A retrospective spatial analysis of dog intake data from an open admission animal shelter in Georgia was conducted to explore patterns within dog demographics and outcomes by pickup location or by the home address of the person who transferred ownership rights of the dog to Athens-Clarke County Animal Control during the period 2014–2016. Spatial analysis found the relationship between these intake locations and the final disposition of the dogs to be non-random, suggesting social and environmental influences on distribution. Statistically significant clusters were identified using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. This study found statistically significant hot spots (i.e., areas with higher …
But Are They Actually Healthier? Challenging The Health/Wellness Divide Through The Ethnography Of Embodied Ecological Heritage, Kristina Baines
But Are They Actually Healthier? Challenging The Health/Wellness Divide Through The Ethnography Of Embodied Ecological Heritage, Kristina Baines
Publications and Research
A holistic definition of ‘health’ remains difficult to operationalize, despite decades of attempts by medical anthropologists and the World Health Organization to do so. Anthropologists routinely reject dichotomous notions – belief vs. knowledge, wellness vs. health, mental vs. physical, environment vs. self – yet demands for physiological evidence of ‘health’ persist. In this article, I ask what evidence would sufficiently demonstrate health, and explore the possibility of measures that move beyond the physiological. Using ethnographic data collected in indigenous Maya communities in Belize and in immigrant communities in New York City, I argue that ecological heritage practices can provide a …
Role Of Dietary Fat And Supplementation In Modulating Neurodegenerative Pathology In Two Animal Model Systems, Malabika Maulik
Role Of Dietary Fat And Supplementation In Modulating Neurodegenerative Pathology In Two Animal Model Systems, Malabika Maulik
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Neurodegenerative disorders are progressive conditions that worsen over time and results in death of neurons. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent example of one such age-related disease, which is characterized by movement disorder (ataxia) and/or cognitive disability (dementia). Pathologically, PD is characterized by a toxic accumulation of α-synuclein protein in the midbrain leading to degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons. The etiology of PD is intricate, and the cause is attributed to genetic mutations and environmental factors like insecticides or heavy metals. Moreover, treatment options are limited and often aimed at treating the symptoms rather than the actual disease progression. Using …
