New England Journal of Public Policy

These articles echo the issues of today that will have an impact on the future and help us understand how current thinking about ethnicity, education, and health within Latino populations presents opportunities for the coming century. The Latino presence in the United States will certainly make itself known. As Richard Rodriguez poignantly reminds us, "We will change America, even as we will be changed."

Health Of The Older African-American Population, Dana M. Hardy

Theses

Health promotion and disease prevention has made a major impact in the United States in the past 20 years. However in terms of disease and risk behavior minority groups in this country are not uniformly disadvantaged. African - Americans had age - adjusted mortality rates well above the rates of white Americans, whereas Hispanic Americans have rates that are comparable to white Americans. Asians and Pacific Islanders and American Indians and Alaska Natives have mortality rates lower than white Americans.

The challenge for chronic disease prevention among minority groups is to get the attention of church and other community leaders …

Exploring The Association Between Body Weight And Health Care Avoidance, Christine M Aramburu-Drury

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the stigma of obesity and its effect on health care utilization. The associations between self-esteem, attribution for weight, body mass index (BMI), satisfaction with medical care and the behavior of delaying/avoiding health care were examined. King's Interacting Systems Framework provided the conceptual framework for this study. Self-administered questionnaires were completed by 216 women recruited from church sites in a southwest city; Correlations, multiple regressions, and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. An increase in BMI is associated with an increase in delay/avoidance of health care. Weight-related and non-weight-related reasons, …

Health-Promoting Behaviors: Predictors Of Early Vs Late Initiation To Prenatal Care, Frances Mary Mckeon

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive, quantitative study was to examine factors that could predict a woman's timing of prenatal care initiation. Participation in early prenatal care, a type of health-promoting behavior, has been associated with improved maternal/child health. Many women however, delay prenatal care initiation until late in their pregnancy; Pender's Health Promotion Model and self-reported data were used to examine the relationship between: (a) preconception participation in health-promoting behaviors, (b) demographic variables, (c) situational factors, (d) interpersonal social support, and (e) perceived barriers to/benefits of prenatal care and the timing of initiation to prenatal care. Self-administered questionnaires were completed …

Unblinded Mandatory Hiv Screening Of Newborns: Care Or Coercion?, Linda Farber Post Aug 1994

Unblinded Mandatory Hiv Screening Of Newborns: Care Or Coercion?, Linda Farber Post

Cardozo Law Review

The image of mother and child is perhaps the most universal symbol of love and protection. The concept of mother and sick child evokes instant compassion and the desire to do somethinganything-to help the mother help her baby. When the disease is both incurable and fatal, there is the expectation that the combined efforts of the state and the medical community will be mobilized to intervene on behalf of those who are afflicted. This Note looks at one such attempt and considers, not the good intentions that prompted it, but the legal ramifications of its implementation.

G93-1138 Water Quality And Requirements For Dairy Cattle, Rick J. Grant Jan 1993

G93-1138 Water Quality And Requirements For Dairy Cattle, Rick J. Grant

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide stresses the importance to the dairy cow of water, an essential but often overlooked nutrient.

Providing insufficient water or water of poor quality to dairy cattle can limit milk production and growth, and can cause health problems. An adequate supply of clean water promotes normal rumen function, high feed intake, digestion and nutrient absorption. Water also maintains blood volume, supplies tissue needs, and makes up about 87 percent of the milk secreted by the cow. The following sections discuss water intake and requirements, water quality and guidelines for proper use of cattle waterers.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide focuses on the best sources of minerals and vitamins, current requirements for production, and feeding practices to best meet these requirements and promote health and productivity of dairy cattle. Dairy cattle require at least 17 minerals and three vitamins in their diet for optimal milk production, reproductive performance, and herd health. Although classical mineral or vitamin deficiency symptoms are rare, in many cases under- and overfeeding of certain minerals and vitamins does occur. Even small imbalances or deficiencies can develop into reproductive, health, and milk production problems. As herd milk production averages in Nebraska climb, it will become …
