Legal and medical experts have noted continued racism in the health care system that prevents the equal distribution of quality care. Initially most racism was intentional and expressed through de jure segregation, as evidenced by federal funding of the construction of racial segregated health care facilities. Now most racism, expressed through de facto segregation, is subtly incorporated into the daily practices of institutions causing an adverse disparate impact on African-Americans. This institutional racism establishes separate and independent barriers through the neutral denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups that results from the normal operations of the institutions …
Promoting Total Wellness In The Health Education Curriculum: A Holistic Approach, Alicia Marie Mciver
Promoting Total Wellness In The Health Education Curriculum: A Holistic Approach, Alicia Marie Mciver
All Graduate Projects
The benefits of exploring, understanding, and balancing the social, mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions in one's life were researched. The research suggests that providing students in health education classrooms with meaningful avenues to learn about these dimensions within themselves would lead to higher levels of wellness and an overall higher quality of life. A handbook for educators was created to supplement parts of the existing curriculum, as well as show readers that this type of supplemental health handbook can be created by anyone to be used with any type of health curriculum. This handbook contains three health units. Each …

Improving health care for the elderly in the tri-county area, especially minority aged, requires engaging with the community at large. Comprehensive changes in service delivery and accessibility to health promotion activities will improve the quality of life for an ever-growing population in the 21st century.
Research On Faith And Health: New Appoaches To Old Questions, Thomas G. Plante, Allen C. Sherman
Research On Faith And Health: New Appoaches To Old Questions, Thomas G. Plante, Allen C. Sherman
Psychology
Does religious faith influence health? Are religious practices associated with altered risks for morbidity or mortality? Do religious or spiritual individuals tend to enjoy better well-being or mental health across the lifespan? Does spiritual or religious involvement change the way individuals adapt to the demands of chronic illness? This volume brings together some of the leading investigators who have explored these intriguing questions. Though research is in its early phases, the chapters that follow review some of what we have learned and begin to trace the outlines of the many mysteries that remain.

Health And Lifestyle Among Ute Native American Elders, Laura L. Prestwich
Health And Lifestyle Among Ute Native American Elders, Laura L. Prestwich
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A basic health and lifestyle questionnaire was given to a convenience sample of 103 Ute elders, age 50 and older. Fifty-three percent reported being diagnosed with diabetes. The mean BMI (body mass index) was 33.31 (SD=8.72). For descriptive purposes, BMI was divided into three categories: less than 25, 25-29.99, 30 or above. Eleven percent were in the BMI category of less than 25. Thirty percent of Ute elders reported a BMI between 25-29.99. Fifty two percent had a BMI of 30 or above. Diabetes rates among this Ute elder sample were significantly lower with a lower income, lower education level, …
Assessment Of Predictors Of Health Behaviors Of Elders In Frontier Nevada, Pauline Bradshaw
Assessment Of Predictors Of Health Behaviors Of Elders In Frontier Nevada, Pauline Bradshaw
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate health-promoting lifestyle practices and correlate these to self identified factors that may limit health promotion activity of frontier rural elders living in Nevada. Pender's Health Promotion Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The sample included 114 participants that were aged 65 and older from locations in Nevada counties that qualify as frontier (population less than 6/square mile). Participants completed a two part self-administered questionnaire, the Health-Promotion Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) and the revised Elderly Health Care Needs Questionnaire (EHCNQ). Findings support the research hypothesis that cognitive-perceptual and …
The Effects Of Volunteering On The Volunteer, John Wilson, Marc Musick
The Effects Of Volunteering On The Volunteer, John Wilson, Marc Musick
Law and Contemporary Problems
Wilson and Musick review some of the research on the supposed benefits of volunteering and describe briefly some of the results of their own work in this area. There is little doubt that there are individual benefits to be derived from doing volunteer work that reach far beyond the volunteer act itself and may linger long after the volunteer role is relinquished.
Religiosity And Physical Fitness: A Study Of Middle-Aged Mormon Men, Janette Olsen
Religiosity And Physical Fitness: A Study Of Middle-Aged Mormon Men, Janette Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
Research has related both physical fitness and religiosity to health. This study combined these ideas and examined the relationship between religiosity and physical fitness among middle aged Mormon men (n=110). Mormons are an ideal population for study because of their strict health code. Fitness variables were grip strength, waist/hip ratio, body mass index (BMI) and estimated maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). A questionnaire assessed level of religiosity and separated subjects into two groups: highly religious (n=35) and less religious (n=14). Moderately religious subjects (n=61) were omitted. A one way ANOVA (between-groups design) found no significant differences in fitness variables between groups. …

A Study Of The Preferences Of The Elderly In The Design Of Ambulatory Health Care Facilities, Stewart Carlton Cluck
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This research paper is a study of the preferences of the well elderly for the design of ambulatory health care facilities. The paper first explores the literature of health care needs and in particular the needs of the elderly segment of the population. Then the structural and physiological conditions of the elderly are discussed and linked to areas of design. A matrix is developed and used to construct a questionnaire that is used in structured interviews. Through a qualitative analysis of the interviews, the preferences of the sample group are determined. These preferences are compared to generally accepted rules of …

Recreation Benefits: The Benefit-Based Approach To Recreation Planning; Why Wellness; Personal/Social Relationships And Wellness, Elery Hamilton Smith
Research outputs pre 2011
The identification and measurement of the benefits which result from leisure and recreation is currently a major concern of both recreation researchers and recreation managers. It has always been assumed that recreation is beneficial; in fact, part of the basic ideology of recreation is that recreational activity is 'bad' for somebody and has also diverted attention from the very important task of developing a critical and valid understanding of what benefits actually result and how they are generated...

Urban Public Services: What The Future Holds, Robert Morris
Urban Public Services: What The Future Holds, Robert Morris
New England Journal of Public Policy
Health and welfare are usually considered secondary or peripheral concerns of modern society. The article considers how questions about the provision of social welfare are imbedded in the economic, social, moral, and political fabric of contemporary America and New England. Underlying trends of economic, social, and attitudinal change are outlined, and implications for the future are considered. The article also considers the role of universities in equipping the next generation of citizens to cope more effectively with the complex issues that are forcing a restructuring of urban services.
