A Replication Of Dawson's Study On Differences In Final Arrangements For Cremation Using A Rural Population Vs An Urban Population, Nadine C. Freshman

Student Work

A study completed by Dawson, Santos, and Burdick in 1990 surveyed close survivors of deceased persons from six metropolitan areas of the United States to investigate the differences in final arrangements when burial or cremation was employed as the method of body disposition. The present study chose to replicate the cremation aspect of Dawson’s study in rural Nebraska. However, as work progressed, it became clear the small number o f responses received would not be statistically significant. At this point, a qualitative aspect was introduced into the study. Nine case studies were obtained to provide a broader scope of understanding …

Elders Caring For Elders: Risk Of Abuse And Neglect?, Marjorie F. Bendik Dnsc, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the phenomena of mood disturbance and associated potential to abuse in an elderly caregiver population. The data from which the results were obtained came from structured interviews, using quantitative measures, with 110 men and women caregivers aged 55 and over, living at home and caring for another physically or mentally ill elder (usually a spouse or other relative) who was living with them. A causal model was developed to examine the effects of locus of control, social support, physical health, stress perception, and coping efficacy on total mood disturbance and potential to abuse. Standardized …

Well-Being Of Elderly Women: Rural-Urban Differences, Betty J. Gale Dnsc, Ms, Rn

Dissertations

Using a stress-coping theoretical framework, this path analytic study examined the effects of hardiness, self-esteem, social support, and stress on coping, service utilization, and well-being of elderly women. Fifty-five rural and fifty-five urban females living in the community comprised the sample whose mean age was 75 years. The overall level of well-being of these women was high. Hardiness was associated with greater social support and well-being. Self-esteem was related to lower stress. Hardiness and self-esteem were also associated with decreased use of emotion-focused coping. Stress had a positive relationship with service utilization and a negative relationship with well-being. Problem-focused coping …

Introductory Notes On Australian Social Gerontology : Edited Transcript Of A Guest Lecture For The Unit "Human Development", Delivered At Claremont Campus On Tuesday, 29 May 1990, David Wiles

Research outputs pre 2011

In a 'greying' Australia demographic realities should be articulated clearly so as to meet the challenges of the future. The aged population will 'peak' in 2021 A.D., and there is an increasing social awareness of this population trend. While the causes of longevity remain to be established, the improvement of individual life expectancy means that many seniors will spend decades in 'retirement'. Women, those of non- English speaking backgrounds, and aboriginals are sections of the aged population having special prob+ems. Comparative social policy, however, suggests that the future funding of aged care is not problematical, though national commitment is required. …

A Study Of Learning Activities Of Selected Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Patients In East Tennessee, Jeannette G. Mclaughlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to identify and describe the individual learning activities of caregivers of people with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and to develop an analytical description of the patterns of learning of these adults. An instrument was not available for use; therefore, a focused interview guide was developed. The interview guide was developed through consultation with several spouses or adult children caring for Alzheimer's patients, professionals in the health care field, and a review of the literature. The major analysis procedure for the study was the constant comparative method, an inductive method that has been used …

Aging Society: Conflict And Struggle Toward The Establishment Of The Meaningful Life For All Generations, Yasukatsu Kudo

Theses

Winter of our life-- A smell of leaves is fallen. The chill finds its way in the dry wind. Leaves little room for a coy disguise. Reflection of our life, Underneath the crammed seams, Is vivid and no-lies. Only a blind man, sitting on the corner, Busy smoothing his gray beard, Can recall his dreams . A song of geese is beaten on the ground. When the ice engraves our wrinkles, Our memories are flatten And worn out.

Statistically, the past few decades showed the rising living standards of the elderly. Social Security benefits have increased almost 50 percent in …

"A Nursing Home ... Not For My Folks!": Families Caring For Their Elderly At Home, Scott A. Bass, Richard Rowland

Gerontology Faculty Publication Series

This booklet is the second in a series of reports about elderly issues. The first, entitled "The Elderly Have Spoken: Is Anybody Listening? The Impact of Fuel Costs on the Elderly," documented the impact of rising fuel costs on the elderly in Massachusetts. Each of the series reports seeks to capture the actual words, expressions, and feelings of elderly people and their loved ones. For the most part, the interviews were conducted by interviewers who are themselves 60 years old or older. We find that this age match provides greater insight and openness to the problems confronting the …

The Elderly Have Spoken: Is Anybody Listening? The Impact Of Fuel Costs On The Elderly, Scott A. Bass, Richard Rowland

Gerontology Faculty Publication Series

This report contains the findings of a study carried out by the Gerontology Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston concerning the effects of the escalating fuel costs on the lives of the elderly who must pay for their own heat. Through the use of an interview format known as "modified critical incident" technique, a team of mostly elderly students spent several weeks during the winter of 1980 eliciting responses from more than 100 elderly individuals from throughout the greater Boston area. Not surprisingly , this study has revealed a number of profound impacts that the radical turn of economic …

Dying And The Social Responsibility Of Institutions, Roger A. Lohmann Nov 1977

Dying And The Social Responsibility Of Institutions, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Contemporary American society has established a comfortable reliance upon a large network of total and quasi-total institutions for dealing with certain life threatening events and socially disruptive conditions As a consequence these institutions have become primary locales for dying. It is the principal argument of this paper that although a large proportion of all deaths now occur in institutions, they are generally harsh and unsympathetic in their handling of dying, and particularly insensitive to the social and psychological needs of surviving significant others in the period immediately following a death. It is suggested that along with accepting the responsibility to …

The Social Work Contract And Survivorship Services, Roger A. Lohmann, Carl Gaddis May 1976

The Social Work Contract And Survivorship Services, Roger A. Lohmann, Carl Gaddis

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The concept of contracting by social workers is a useful way to describe the normative bounds of client-worker interaction. A growing literature on death and dying in recent years suggests first that long-term care institutions are increasingly the locales for dying in our society and that social workers and other professionals working in such locales have frequently dealt inadequately or not at all with the social and emotional dimensions of death and dying in institutional settings. This article proposes that the social work contract with terminally ill patients be extended to include their survivors.

Model Neighborhoods: A Research Note, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Cities, like people, age. In the United States the aging process for cities has, in many ways, been less than graceful. As a result, there is great concern in this country today with the “decline” of our cities. This note considers the elderly population of south Minneapolis Minnesota and makes recommendations for the adaptation of the Model Cities program to better meet their needs.
