Petrology And Geochemistry Of The Killdeer Carbonates, John J. Delimata Jan 1975

Petrology And Geochemistry Of The Killdeer Carbonates, John J. Delimata

Theses and Dissertations

The strata of the proposed Killdeer Formation (Stone, W. J., 1972) in the Killdeer Mountains of Dunn County, North Dakota is composed of a sequence of tuffaceous, calcareous, dolomitized and silicified flat lying sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. It is the purpose of this report to describe and integrate the petrology and geochemistry of these sediments.

Fieldwork was conducted during the summer of 1972. Forty-three stratigraphic sections were measured and representative samples of each were collected for further analysis. Seven section were selected as representative of the area, and samples from these were studied in thin section with the petrographic …

A Rock Evaluation Schema For Transporting Planning In Kentucky, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer May 1974

A Rock Evaluation Schema For Transporting Planning In Kentucky, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The initial goal was to devise an engineering classification system for intact rock samples based on simple index tests which could be used to categorize Kentucky surface and near-surface rock types and assist Kentucky Department of Transportation personnel in planning for transportation facilities. While conducting the literature survey, several facts become apparent:

  1. a large number of rock classification systems, geologic and technical, general and specific, already existed;
  2. an equally large number of index tests had been devised; and
  3. there was a lack of communication among those involved in specialized areas of rock-related work (geologists, civil engineers, mining engineers, etc.), and, …

Geology And Structure Of The Serra Do Mar In Eastern São Paulo, Brazil, Peter Rideg Jan 1974

Geology And Structure Of The Serra Do Mar In Eastern São Paulo, Brazil, Peter Rideg

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Detailed geologic mapping in the Serra do Mar region of eastern São Paulo, Brazil, enables the definition of two northeasterly trending Precambrian lithologic complexes in heretofore undifferentiated crystalline complex rocks. These two complexes are the Suzano Complex and the Itatinga Complex, separated one from the other by the large Cubatão fault zone.

The Suzano Complex is divided into three formations: the Oropó schist, the Iupeba gneiss, and the Paranapiacaba gneiss. The Itatinga Complex is divided into four formations: the Biritiba-Mirim migmatite, the Jurubatuba migmatite, the Itapanhaú gneiss, and the Guarujá migmatite. Numerous late and post-tectonic granitic bodies occur intrusive into …

The Stratigraphy And Economic Potential Of Permo-Pennsylvanian Strata In Southwestern North Dakota, Harold C. Ziebarth

Theses and Dissertations

This study of the Fermo-Pennsylvanian Minnelusa Group in North Dakota was designed to clarify the stratigraphy, illustrate association of depositional environments, and to relate the geologic history and economic potential of these strata.

The Minnelusa Group is defined here to include strata above the unconformity on the Madison and Big Snowy Groups and below the Opeche Formation. The Minnelusa Group in North Dakota contains the Tyler, Alaska Bench, Amsden and Broom Creek Formations. The Amsden has been divided into three marker defined lithozones designated, in ascending order, Medora, Dickinson, and Bismarck.

Drill and core samples were examined and described interpretively …

Hydrogeology And The Tapeats Amphitheater And Deer Basin, Grand Canyon, Arizona: A Study In Karst Hydrology, Peter Wesley Huntoon Jan 1968

Hydrogeology And The Tapeats Amphitheater And Deer Basin, Grand Canyon, Arizona: A Study In Karst Hydrology, Peter Wesley Huntoon

KIP Theses and Dissertations

North of the Grand Canyon, water from precipitation infiltrates into the permeable Kaibab Formation which outcrops over the Kaibab and Kanab Plateaus. Water moves vertically downward through a karst drainage network in the Kaibab and Toroweap Formations until it reaches semi-permeable clastic sediments.

Geology Of The West-Central Part Of The Malad Range, Idaho, Phillip H. Wach May 1967

Geology Of The West-Central Part Of The Malad Range, Idaho, Phillip H. Wach

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The west-central part of the Malad Range is located in south-eastern Idaho. This area was the site of thick marine deposition in the early Paleozoic period. In the Tertiary and Quaternary periods continental deposition occurred, covering the Paleozoic rocks. Quartzite and shale units of the Brigham Quartzite are found near the base of the Cambrian section. Carbonate with shale interbeds is found in the middle and late Cambrian units. Limestone and silty limestone are found in the early and middle Ordovician time overlain by the middle Ordovician Swan Peak Quartzite. The Laketown Dolomite includes units of late Ordovician and Silurian …

A Stratigraphic And Sedimentologic Analysis Of The Tongue River And Sentinel Butte Formations (Paleocene), Western North Dakota, Chester F. Royse Jr. Jan 1967

A Stratigraphic And Sedimentologic Analysis Of The Tongue River And Sentinel Butte Formations (Paleocene), Western North Dakota, Chester F. Royse Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The Tongue River-Sentirel Butte contact has been regarded by many workers as a vague color boundary of minor extent within a relatively homogeneous sequence of Paleocene strata. Consequently, the Sentinel Butte has come to be regarded as a subordinate unit of the ”Tongue River Formation. As defined in report, the contact is a distinctive horizon between two discrete lithogenetic units. It characterized by three criteria: a horizon (HT Butte bad) &t the top of the Tongue River sequence; a. basal sandy unit in the Sentinel Butte sequence, and a marked change in color between buff yellow Tongue River sediments below …

Detection Of Buried Basement Highs By Airphoto Drainage Pattern Analysis, Reynolds And Wayne Counties, Missouri, Papken Aram Zarzavatjian

Masters Theses

"Purpose and Scope: The purpose of this study is to determine if it is possible to detect buried Precambrian igneous hills in Wayne County and the larger part of Reynolds County in southeast Missouri by the use of aerial photo drainage pattern analysis.

The St. Francis Mountains are located in southeast Missouri. They form a part of the Precambrian basement complex, and have been exposed at the surface by the erosion of the lower Paleozoic sediments which covered them. Some of the hills which make up the St. Francis Mountains are exposed to a great degree, while others still have …

A Geological Study Of The Irvine Ranch Area, Johnson And Campbell Counties, Wyoming, Gale E. Butterfield

Masters Theses

"The discovery of uranium in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming, by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1952 has lead to an extensive exploration program throughout the region by both private and governmental agencies. This report is a geological study of an area in the southwestern part of the basin.

Geological and radiometric mapping carried out as a part of this report indicated several areas of uranium occurrence. Some of these occurrences warrant tests by drilling.

Mineralogical and petrographic study has shown the principal uranium minerals to be carnotite and metatyuyamunite. The mineralization occurs in arkosic sandstones. Assays of the …
