Snowpacks are changing in northeastern North America as the regional climate warms, yet the relative influence of changes in precipitation compared to changes in ablation on snowpacks is poorly understood. We use 56 years of weekly snow water equivalent (SWE) measurements from three locations within a study site which vary in elevation and aspect, paired with adjacent daily climate measurements, to investigate relationships between climate and snowpack onset, maximum, and disappearance. Maximum snowpack size and snowpack duration are shrinking at all sites, at rates ranging from 4.3 days/decade at the coldest site to 9.6 days/decade at the warmest site. The …

Fiscal Decentralization And Education Index; Evidence From Punjab Pakistan, Noor Ahmed
Fiscal Decentralization And Education Index; Evidence From Punjab Pakistan, Noor Ahmed
CBER Conference
Disparities in the distribution of public services have persisted throughout Pakistan's history. Current research on regional development has stressed the need of evaluating human development phenomena using spatial models such as density, locality, and distance. The study investigates how fiscal decentralization influences the education index at the district level in Pakistan's Punjab province. The research is based on the education index, which has five components. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) integrates these variables to provide a final education index. The study's findings revealed that the significant positive effects of fiscal decentralization on the education index at the district level depend …

Background: Wildland firefighters are likely to experience heightened risks to safety, health, and overall well-being as changing climates increase the frequency and intensity of exposure to natural hazards. Working at the intersection of natural resource management and emergency response, wildland firefighters have multidimensional careers that often incorporate elements from disparate fields to accomplish the tasks of suppressing and preventing wildfires. Thus, they have distinctly different job duties than other firefighters (e.g., structural firefighters) and experience environmental health risks that are unique to their work. We conducted a systematic scoping review of scientific literature that addresses wildland firefighter environmental health. Our …

A Volumetric Model Of Ree And Other Critical Element-Bearing Underclay Deposits In The Eckley Mine Area, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, Harrison Spiller
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Eastern Middle Anthracite Field in southern Luzerne County, Pennsylvania was investigated for potential quantities of critical minerals, including rare earth-bearing minerals (REE) present in underclay deposits associated with coal measures of an existing anthracite coal mine. This work is built on Department of Energy/National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/ NETL) 2016 work on samples from the Eckley Mine near Hazelton, Pa. which discovered elevated contents of some critical minerals in core from a single wellbore. This thesis reports on new and additional information collected from that area through geological field work, detailed conventional core descriptions, stratigraphic cross sections, and spectral …

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Everyday our vision travels across time and space. We see images in the media about atrocities, disruptions, crises, famine, and wars. And in each case, our sense of injustice is awakened. We feel outrage and indignation based upon our ideals and value systems, which were formed through our traditions and religions. But in this age where the power of media and information is so powerful, what we see is often manufactured to appeal to our values. While these values circulate among the images we see in cyberspace, these manipulations are rooted in certain realities: geography, natural resources, and power relationships. …

Southeast Asia is a global hotspot of peatland degradation and related greenhouse gas emissions. Anthropogenic impacts, mainly associated with agricultural conversion, shift Southeast Asian peatlands from carbon sinks to significant carbon sources. Here we first describe the impacts of anthropogenic drainage on landscape-scale carbon dynamics of individual peatlands and then use an impulse‐response model of radiative forcing to quantify the climate impacts of peat-carbon losses. Whereas water-table elevation (i.e. drainage depth) determines the magnitude of CO2 emissions at the site-scale, the geometric arrangement of artificial drainage networks determines carbon losses on the landscape-scale. Among all peatland greenhouse gas fluxes, the …

Cold-climate urban areas often face severe air pollution events in wintertime because of residential heating and vehicle emissions into shallow surface inversion layers. Many state-of-the-art regional chemistry-transport models cannot capture the small spatio-temporal scale of the transport and chemical processes occurring in these environments. Here we introduce a new version of our one-dimensional atmospheric chemistry and transport model, PACT-1D that includes continuous exchange of atmospheric air with the interstitial air of a snow layer and a kinetic treatment of multi-phase chemical processes in air and snow. PACT-1D allows modeling and assessment of the interaction of transport, chemistry, and emissions on the …

China, with nearly 20% of the world's population, achieves self-sufficiency in major grain production using only about 10% of the global arable land. To further ensure food security in China, it is crucial to gain a deep understanding of the driving factors behind grain production. Climate change, water scarcity, and air pollution pose serious threats to food production. Air quality in China is among the poorest in the world, thus quantifying its impact on grain production not only holds significance for maintaining its food security but also provides valuable insights into future air quality management policies. Here, we conducted a …

The Arctic-boreal zone and its permafrost regions have historically been sparsely measured for carbon dioxide and methane fluxes. This data sparsity has created significant uncertainties in Arctic-boreal carbon budget estimates. However, over the past decade, the availability of Arctic-boreal carbon flux data has increased substantially. Yet, it remains scattered across different repositories, papers, and unpublished sources, making it hard to estimate more accurate Arctic-boreal carbon budgets. To address this research gap, we have compiled a database of Arctic-boreal carbon fluxes (ABCFlux v2) from flux repositories, literature, and site principal investigators, which will be openly distributed. The database includes carbon dioxide …

Scale-Dependent Effects Of Urban Canopy Cover, Canopy Volume, And Impervious Surfaces On Near-Surface Air Temperature In A Mid-Sized City, Carson Ralls, Anne Y. Polyakov, Vivek Shandas
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Cities are significantly warmer than their surrounding rural environments. Known as the ‘urban heat island effect’, it can affect the health of urban residents and lead to increased energy use, public health impacts, and damage to infrastructure. Although this effect is extensively researched, less is known about how landscape characteristics within cities affect local temperature variation. This study examined how tree canopy cover, canopy volume, and impervious surface cover affect daytime near-surface air temperature, and how these effects vary between different scales of analysis (10, 30, 60, 90 m radii), ranging from approximate street corridor to city block size. Temperature …

Title: Comparing Climate Growth of Oak and Tulip Poplar Species in Bernheim Forest, Kentucky, USA using Dendrochronological Methods
Abstract:
With climate change, the state of Kentucky is expected to face increases in hydrological variability and extremes. To understand more about future projections, past climatic conditions can be analyzed with proxy-based data sources. Tree-rings provide annual to sub-annual resolution that can be used for proxy-based climate reconstructions. Kentucky, however, lacks tree-ring data and this leaves the state understudied from a high temporal and spatial resolution paleo perspective. …

Investigating Drought Response And Paleoclimate Potential Of A New Network Of White Oak Chronologies In Western Kentucky, Usa, Audrey J. Heichelbech, Megan Gibson, Maegen Rochner
The Cardinal Edge
In Kentucky, historic and paleo-climate data are limited, and current understanding of long-term climate change in the state relies on instrumental data spanning only 1895-present. Proxy data are necessary to extend the temporal and spatial span of climate information. One potential proxy source for Kentucky is tree ring data, but currently, only four such datasets are publicly available on the International Tree Ring Data Bank (ITRDB). Archaeological and archival timber sources may help to fill in this gap. In the 1940s, Florence Hawley-Ellis, the first woman dendrochronologist, collected samples of white oak (Quercus alba L.) from four counties in western …

Geomorphological Factors Affecting Urban Development In Buraidah City, Areej Ali Almudhyan Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
The research analyzes Buraidah City's urban landscape, identifying geomorphic factors impacting new neighborhood development and proposing a strategic urban growth plan. Utilizing spatial analysis tools, the study determines suitable areas for urban expansion. The study adopts both an inductive and analytical approach to achieve its goals, utilizing spatial analysis tools, including the Spatial Analyst, to identify areas viable for construction. Key findings include the extent of unsuitable land for urban uses in the new districts, covering 12.0676 square kilometers or 3.6% of the total land area, and the percentage of land requiring planning to become suitable for urban uses, which …
Physical Frictions And Digital Banking Adoption, Hyun Soo Choi, Roger Loh
Physical Frictions And Digital Banking Adoption, Hyun Soo Choi, Roger Loh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The behavioral literature suggests that minor frictions can elicit desirable behavior without obvious coercion. Using closures of ATMs in a densely populated city as an instrument for small frictions to physical banking access, we find that customers affected by ATM closures increase their usage of the bank's digital platform. Other spillover effects of this adoption of financial technology include increases in point-of-sale (POS) transactions, electronic funds transfers, automatic bill payments and savings, and a reduction in cash usage. Our results show that minor frictions can help overcome the status-quo bias and facilitate significant behavior change.

As we face multiple environmental crises (e.g. climate change, nutrient pollution, freshwater scarcity), there is often a disconnect between an entity’s activities and the pollution resulting from that activity. Footprint tools help address this disconnect. They are effective in educating people, institutions and communities on how their resource use results in environmental pollution and what we can do to moderate that pollution. These tools connect an entity’s activities with the associated pollution. Footprint tools are also constantly evolving. As we better understand how to best estimate emissions—especially from sources further removed like those from the supply chain—the guidance and methods …

The everyday lives of international graduate students are often assumed to be similar to their American-born colleagues and therefore rendered invisible. In a post-9/11 America, juggling various uncertainties including social conservatism in small college towns and immigration restrictions on employment can truly test the limits of an international graduate student’s sanity. However, student resources including international student groups can provide the space for a more comfortable dialogue between them and their American peers as well as among international students. This essay highlights some of the issues I have faced as an Indian graduate student, and provides pointers for other international …
