Exploring Covid-19 Case Fatality In Relation To The Prevalence Of Chronic Conditions And Health Behaviors In Appalachian Kentucky, W. Jay Christian

Journal of Appalachian Health

Background: Research has demonstrated that common chronic conditions, especially those related to cardiovascular health, are important risk factors for severe COVID-19 symptoms or hospitalization. Population prevalence rates of such conditions have not previously been examined in relation to COVID-19 case fatality rates in the Central Appalachian region.

Purpose: This study examined prevalence rates of selected chronic conditions and COVID-19 case fatality rates to determine whether the relationship between them is consistent across Appalachian and non-Appalachian regions of Kentucky.

Methods: Data from Kentucky’s Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (KyBRFS) were used to calculate prevalence rates of asthma, diabetes, influenza vaccination, hypertension, obesity, …

Depictions Of Greece's Mgration Crisis, Erin Connie Templeton May 2021

Depictions Of Greece's Mgration Crisis, Erin Connie Templeton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

ABSTRACTOver the past decade, Greece’s position as a center for migration and immigration has been prominent in the spotlight of the international news media. The mainland of Greece and its islands have played an important role in human migration throughout much of human history, with ancient Greece being one of the world’s most well-known early human civilizations. Though in humanity’s ancient past, Greece served as an economic and cultural center, there is an obvious shift in Greece’s place on the international stage. There is a modern perception of Greece as an entry point, a pass-through, and as a sort of …

Tapestry And Tomb, Choreography And Clot : Metaphors For Mobilities And Moorings In Geographical Literature, Zachary Robert Cudney May 2021

Tapestry And Tomb, Choreography And Clot : Metaphors For Mobilities And Moorings In Geographical Literature, Zachary Robert Cudney

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Metaphors, alongside maps, are important tools in geography. More than just a form of figurative language which helps represent space, metaphors play a fundamental role in shaping geographical theory and practice. They have been shown to influence conceptual systems at both an individual and a disciplinary level. Many geographical terms, like “foothill” and “congestion,” contain metaphors in disguise. However commonplace, metaphors are nonetheless steeped in the circumstances of their formation. To better examine the implications and opportunities of their usage, I focus specifically on metaphors used in geographical literature on mobilities and moorings—those points at which mobilities come to a …

Spatiotemporal Distributions Of Sargassum On Grand Cayman, Graeme Timmeney May 2021

Spatiotemporal Distributions Of Sargassum On Grand Cayman, Graeme Timmeney

Masters Theses

This mixed methods research examines individual perceptions of Sargassum on Grand Cayman’s beaches in 2020 using participant mapping, and semi – structured interviews. Results from the participant mapping are compared to satellite detection of sargassum. Sargassum poses health risks to both humans and the natural environment. Decaying Sargassum produces sulfuric gas and prevents young turtle hatchlings from reaching the ocean. Since 2011, Sargassum has diffused beyond the Sargasso Sea into entirely novel locations, spanning from the west African Coast to the Gulf of Mexico. Increased biomass has proven to be overwhelming for many Caribbean Islands, including Grand Cayman where hundreds …

Preparing for disasters at universities differs throughout the country but taking preventative measures is the first step in reducing loss of life and recovery measures. This research examined differences among undergraduate students regarding perceptions when it comes to extreme cold events at Western Michigan University (WMU). The main focus of the thesis was to determine if there is a lack of awareness and/or preparation measures of extreme cold events. Data were collected online using a specially designed questionnaire through Qualtrics. Survey questions were coded and analyzed using SPSS software using standard univariate descriptive statistics and/or multivariate statistical tests deemed appropriate. …

A House With No Walls, Anna Mikuskova Apr 2021

A House With No Walls, Anna Mikuskova

Theses

As a child, I often listened to my father’s stories of his boyhood in 1950s Czechoslovakia; adventures taking place in the narrow cobblestoned streets of his hometown or near the fields and lakes of his grandparents’ village. I never met any of his family. And by the time I was born, the streets and buildings that came alive in his descriptions were gone: they were demolished together with eighty other towns in the area to make way for expanding coal mines. With no way to connect my father’s memories to physical locations or even images, the stories I heard sounded …

The Practical Geography Of Always Coming Home, David Bratman Apr 2021

The Practical Geography Of Always Coming Home, David Bratman

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Ursula K. Le Guin is a fantasy writer focused on the detailed description of the locales of her stories, in particular Always Coming Home. In this she may be usefully compared and contrasted with Tolkien and other authors of fantasy of place. This article is particularly concerned with the geography of the Valley of the Na in Always Coming Home as a fictionalization of the Napa Valley. It describes in detail the maps in the book and their relationship with the primary world geography. It recounts, from fieldwork, what is to be found at the Kesh townsites in our primary-world …

The Eviction Landscape In South Carolina, Ethan Magnuson Apr 2021

The Eviction Landscape In South Carolina, Ethan Magnuson

Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the South Carolinian eviction crisis from the perspective of radical geography. South Carolina was chosen for the severity of its crisis and the lack of research at a sub-state level. Court records of eviction filings from 2019 were geocoded and tested for spatial clustering, which was clearly visible. Plaintiff names were used to identify the most frequent filers and distinguish landlords by type. At the census tract level, eviction filing counts were compared with neighborhood characteristics using negative binomial regression, and most were found to be significant in South Carolina. …

The Evolution Of Columbia's Neighborhoods: 1937 To Present, Sophie Kahler Apr 2021

The Evolution Of Columbia's Neighborhoods: 1937 To Present, Sophie Kahler

Senior Theses

The residential area in which someone lives can determine their lifestyle — from with whom they interact to where they shop, eat, and visit — as well as their life outcome, through factors such as school zoning and mortgage availability. Historically, American cities have developed along racial and socioeconomic lines as a result of federal, state, and local policies, lending practices, and explicit social pressures. No more is this clear than through the creation and use of the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation redlining data, a set of maps produced by the federal government that divided cities into neighborhoods, rated those …

Nhanes Iii Mortality Follow Up: Social Determinants Creating Disparity Within The Health Outcomes Of Persons With Diabetes, Claire B. Adams

University Honors Theses

Given the recent research into the social determinants affecting health outcomes, the goal of this thesis is to examine whether a non-urban setting, among other social determinants of health, increases the risk of mortality among the United States diabetic population. We examined the relationship of urban and non-urban diabetes rates among those aged 40-74 years using a national sample of diabetic and nondiabetic Americans. The data was pulled from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) which was conducted from 1988 to 1994. After excluding pregnant women, those who did not complete a fasting AM glucose, and …

Environmental Determinism And Professional Football, Hunter Hallows

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper analyzes the impact that geography has through the scope of determinism on professional football within the last 20 years. Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd suggested the idea of determinism in football in 2017, and this project follows up on the idea that weather and climate specifically will be determinant factors in the success of an NFL franchise. Multiple demographic, economic, and climatic factors were selected to examine which factors are determinant in NFL franchise success. T-Tests were run on each of these variables to provide a P-Value, or an indication of whether or not the relationship between NFL …
