There has been longstanding concern over the seemingly intractable problem of boys’ academic achievement. Despite extensive research, there is little consensus among researchers and educators regarding best practices and approaches in mitigating and remediating the problem. This mixed-methods study sought to illuminate the issue further by focusing on the meaningful lived experiences of six young men aged 18 to 24 who attended and graduated from a central Massachusetts public high school. The course will provide an analysis of major social variables that affect population health: poverty, social class, gender, race, family, community, work, behavioral risks, and coping resources. Readings and discussion center on understanding the theories, measurement and empirical evidence related to specific social conditions and experiences such as socioeconomic position, discrimination, social networks and support, work conditions, ecological level neighborhood and community social conditions, and social and economic policies. This qualitative study follows the experiences of four female students as they sought to gain access to native speakers and the L2, engage with the culture, and fulfill program speaking requirements (two hours of speaking the second language outside of class per weekday) in Amman, Jordan. This study aimed to analyze the effect of subject majoring and gender on learning outcomes and scientific process skills. This research applied an expost facto with a 2 x 2 factorial design. The sam-ple were the 11th grade students of a Senior High School in Gresik, Indonesia. The number of students’ were 65 majoring in MIA(math and science) and 68 majoring in IIS (social science). The data were collected using observation and test and analyzed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (Manova). The recently released DSM-5 (2013) includes a new sexual dysfunction: Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (FSIAD). For the first time, the low sexual desire disorders are split along gender lines, and lack of sexual ‘receptivity’ is offered as a criterion for diagnosis in women only. Although ‘severe relationship distress’ or other ‘significant stressors’ are to be considered during evaluation for FSIAD, the patient’s trauma history is not evaluated as part of the protocol. The presence of violence or distress can potentially elicit a differential diagnosis, but what constitutes ‘severity’ is not articulated either, except to designate ‘partner violence’ as the primary …

Emerging research highlights the social penalties for men and women who commit cross-gendered behaviors. Here, I examine how and when two contextual mechanisms (competence and credentials) alter people's perceptions of cross-gendered behavior and render actors as less gender-atypical and more gender-typical. In Study 1, I tested the hypothesis that incompetence in cross-gendered behaviors would communicate same-gendered qualities by contrast. In Study 2, I tested the hypothesis that an actor who commits a cross-gendered behavior will receive less gender-inconsistent evaluations if they first demonstrate gender-typical traits. The design of this study is qualitative research by gathering oral literature data on Raas Island. The data were collected through observation, video recording, tape recording, note-taking, and interviews. Prior research has focused on the relationship between parenthood and psychological well-being, with mixed results. Some studies have also addressed potential gender differences in this relationship, again yielding varied findings. One reason may be methodological choices pursued in these studies, including the lack of focus on combined parental roles (for example, biological parent and stepparent). The authors used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 (N = 6,276) and multinomial treatment models to address how combined roles influence depressive symptoms in mothers and fathers. This dissertation traces the ways that oppressive gender roles and racial tensions in the Caribbean today developed out of the British imperial system of indentured labor. Between 1837 and 1920, after slavery was abolished in the British colonies and before most colonies achieved independence, approximately 750,000 laborers, primarily from India and China, traveled to the Caribbean under indenture. This is a critical but under-explored aspect of colonial history, as this immigration dramatically altered the ethnic make up of the Caribbean, the cultural norms and traditions of those who migrated, and the structure of British imperialism. While there is a strong global acknowledgement of the roles of women in water management by the United Nations International Water for Life Decade 2005-2015, discourses on gender mainstreaming in water management are still marginalised and under-theorised. In recent years the success rates of different groups of students in higher education (HE), have come under considerable scrutiny, with gender and ethnicity identified as key attributes predicting differential achievement of ‘good degrees’. A review of previous studies highlights the need for research which looks beyond ‘the deficit model’ to explain the attainment gap. This study examined whether exposure to community violence was related to sexual risk behaviors in a nationally representative sample of young adults and if there were gender or racial/ethnic differences in these relationships. The analytic sample for this study was drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health and was composed of 7,726 unmarried, heterosexual African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic/Latino young adults aged 18 to 27 years old. Approximately 12% of participants reported some community violence exposures, with men and African Americans reporting the highest rates of such exposures. Few studies have explored the long-term impacts of camp experiences on career choice, although there is a need to better understand how camp experiences may influence this decision to guide staff recruitment and retention efforts. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of camp experiences on future career paths for women. Twenty-two camp alumnae who attended an all-girls camp completed a retrospective online survey. Salient themes related to career impacts included human service career interest, outdoor career interest, leadership and interpersonal skill development, and social-emotional skill development. From 1985 to 2009, the juvenile justice system processed 86% more offending cases for females, with only a 17% rise in male cases (Puzzanchera et al., 2012), highlighting the urgent need for understanding of gender differences in etiological factors of offending. Much of the existing research that predicts responses to infidelity subscribes to an evolutionary psychology perspective, predicting response by gender differently based on motives concerning procreation. Emotion regulation has been found to be predictive of a variety of psychological outcomes, including internalizing problems. Pre-adolescents, a group particularly susceptible to these problems, have been relatively understudied in terms of how emotion regulation affects these outcomes. Additionally, the issue of gender has been found to influence internalizing problems such that girls report more depression than boys. The current study used a measure of emotion regulation as well as the Children’s Sex Role Inventory to examine the relationship between one’s sex-role type, emotion regulation style, and reports of subclinical depression and anxiety. Many researchers have discussed the negative effects that male gender roles have on men and those around them. These negative effects are known as male gender role conflict. Although previous studies have asked individual men and women questions about male gender role conflict and relationship satisfaction, this study is the first to use a dyadic approach – simultaneously asking both partners in a heterosexual romantic relationship, in order to obtain both actual and perceived male gender role conflict. Rewriting Women’S Stories: Modern Adaptations Of Fairy Tales And Their Feminist Implications, Cassandra Corrado

This thesis examines contemporary adaptations of the Grimm Brothers’ Snow White and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. I argue that following Disney’s popular adaptations of these two tales, feminists responded with adaptations that reflected modern concerns. These adaptations also reflected the ways in which fairy tale heroines are often silenced and pushed into the margins by their authors. The adaptations that I examine include Gail Carson Levine’s Fairest, Barbara Walker’s “Snow Night,” Angela Carter’s “The Snow Child,” Carolyn Turgeon’s Mermaid, and Laura Antoniou’s “The Little Urban Maid.” This thesis is informed by Second- and Third-Wave feminism, and is particularly …
