An Exploration Of The Determinants Of Attitude Toward Computers In Middle School Students, Earl Wayne Connell Edd Jan 1991

An Exploration Of The Determinants Of Attitude Toward Computers In Middle School Students, Earl Wayne Connell Edd

Dissertations

The educational world is belatedly rushing into the world of technology with relatively limited factual information concerning students' attitude toward computers. While most students have a positive attitude, research has indicated that the male is more positive than the female for various reasons. The purpose of this study was to investigate a diverse set of possible determinants of attitude toward computers including sex, ethnic background, learning style, and computer literacy. The subjects were 284 coeducational students from four ethnic backgrounds that attended three middle schools in San Diego. A requirement that subjects have two years of experience with computer assisted …

An Investigation To Determine The Prevalence Of Starvation Dieting Among High School Students As Affected By Gender, Race And Socioeconomic Status, Michal Lee Erickson Nov 1990

An Investigation To Determine The Prevalence Of Starvation Dieting Among High School Students As Affected By Gender, Race And Socioeconomic Status, Michal Lee Erickson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Sociologists report that twenty million Americans are on a 'serious' diet. There has never been a period when such large numbers of people have spent so much time, money, and emotional energy on their weight. The message conveyed by society, the Fashion and movie industries, modern medicine and the media is quite clear - thin is in! The problem lies in the fact that the message does not distinguish between realistic standards and unattainable ideals, especially for women.

Experts on eating disorders report that ninety percent of those suffering from anorexia nervosa (self-starvation) are females, ages 13-21, from white ethnic …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud Jun 1990

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older).

The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

Acting Out Caring: An Andogynous Trait, Clayton Funk Jan 1990

Acting Out Caring: An Andogynous Trait, Clayton Funk

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

A problem in gender studies concerns frequent critique of sex-role stereotypes. But how often do we analyze characteristics that men and women have in common? The notion is doubtful that women must be essentially nurturant and empathic, and that men must be analytical and assertive. The strongest educators possess the best of both, no matter the gender, and are usually capable of modeling a sensibility of caring about learning.

Equality Theory, Marital Rape, And The Promise Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Robin West Jan 1990

Equality Theory, Marital Rape, And The Promise Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Robin West

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

During the 1980s a handful of state judges either held or opined in dicta what must be incontrovertible to the feminist community, as well as to most progressive legal advocates and academics: the so-called marital rape exemption, whether statutory or common law in origin, constitutes a denial of a married woman's constitutional right to equal protection under the law. Indeed, a more obvious denial of equal protection is difficult to imagine: the marital rape exemption denies married women protection against violent crime solely on the basis of gender and marital status. What possibly could be less rational than a statute …

Effects Of Athletic Participation And Gender On Moral Judgment In Student Athletes And Nonathletes, Elizabeth Mary Baldizan Jan 1990

Effects Of Athletic Participation And Gender On Moral Judgment In Student Athletes And Nonathletes, Elizabeth Mary Baldizan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess moral development of student athletes and nonathletes, employing James Rest's (1979, 1988) Defining Issues Test (DIT). Rest adapted Kohlberg's cognitive moral development theory to an objective measurement tool, the Defining Issues Test, which investigates moral judgment by examining the choices an individual makes in solving a series of moral dilemmas. Each subject obtained a Principled Morality Score which was interpreted as the relative importance attributed to principled moral considerations in making moral decisions. Participants for the study from intercollegiate athletics were from women's basketball and softball teams, and men's intercollegiate soccer and …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Gender Construction in Prime-Time Sitcoms: Roseanne and Murphy Brown analyzes gender portrayal in the highest rated situation comedies on network television in the United States in 1992. Findings from previous decades of media research on gender portrayal in network television are used as a standard for compariSon Variations in gender portrayal because of social class differences are also examined; The main research methodology employed is content …

Role Conflict Among Women Graduate Students: A Matter Of Gender, Nancy Lee Downey Jan 1990

Role Conflict Among Women Graduate Students: A Matter Of Gender, Nancy Lee Downey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores ways in which women balance the demands of graduate school with other social roles and examines factors affecting role conflicts they encounter. Based on responses from a mail questionnaire, the survey describes experiences of 461 women graduate students at University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1989. Moving beyond research that often considered only structural indicators as causes of role conflict, traditional and egalitarian gender ideologies within marriage are shown to have significant effect on wife-student role conflict. Various coping strategies are seen as indicators of role negotiating processes initiated by women in an effort to achieve personal …

Assimilation And Accommodation In Family Discourse: A Longitudinal Analysis, Marcia Summers May 1989

Assimilation And Accommodation In Family Discourse: A Longitudinal Analysis, Marcia Summers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Assimilative behavioral strategies provide continuity through maintenance of similarities, traditions, and interactions, while accommodative strategies result in social innovation through the creation of new modes and interactive patterns (J. Block, 1982; J. H. Block, 1983). It was hypothesized that females would show assimilative discourse patterns through the maintenance of conversational topics, while males would show accommodative patterns through more frequent changes in conversational topic, and that the roots of this pattern lie in family conversation. Nineteen families were videotaped at one month, four months, and four years following the birth of their second child. Results showed that gender-differentiated use of …

Multiple Role Women And Their Spouses: Variables Effecting Family Functioning, Julie C. Novak Dnsc, Cpnp, Ma, Rn

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of age, education, perceived child care support, social support, role conflict, coping and marital adjustment on family functioning as experienced by multiple role women and their spouses. The family has long been recognized as the most important contextual influence in human growth and development. Nurses have been working with families for generations, especially in community and mental health nursing. It is only in the last decade, however, that there has been an increasing interest in family research among nurses reflected in a trend away from individual-focused studies and toward a …

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 1989

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Written by a feminist (Virginia Woolf), for a bisexual (Vita Sackville-West), about an androgyne (Orlando), the novel Orlando would seem to be the quintessential feminist text. And that, indeed, is what it is in danger of becoming, just as Woolf is in danger of becoming the acclaimed Mother of Us All. In promoting Virginia Woolf's Orlando as a feminist work, feminist critics have picked the right text, but for the wrong reasons. Orlando works as a feminist text not because of what it says about sexual identity but because of what it manages not to say; not because of what …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Experiential Learning Model Applied To Instructing Interpersonal Skills To First Year College Students Using Norm-Referenced Tests, Everett L. Gorman Mar 1988

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Experiential Learning Model Applied To Instructing Interpersonal Skills To First Year College Students Using Norm-Referenced Tests, Everett L. Gorman

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Interpersonal Communication Skills were identified as essential competencies for success and career advancement in the Criminal Justice system. In order to meet this need the Correctional Services Program offers a three credit course entitled, "Human Relations in Criminal Justice." The college and Correctional Services Program, also, have adopted the experiential learning model to enhance the performance of first and second year students in this critical area. Although, the experiential learning approach was chosen as the vehicle for instructing the course in Human Relations, there was a lack of evidence to prove the effectiveness of this learning theory for promoting change …

Gender Differences In Mathematics Achievement, Denise D'Antonio Jan 1988

Gender Differences In Mathematics Achievement, Denise D'Antonio

Honors Capstones

Current research on gender differences in mathematics achievement is summarized. A cross-cultural study of sex differences in attitudes towards mathematics (confidence, individuality and liking) and in attributional patterns in mathematics (ability, effort, task, environment/luck) included American sixth graders (n=155, m=70, f=85) and British 11-12 year olds (n=42, m=18, f=24). Comparisons based on responses to a two-part survey concerning sex of student, sex of teacher, nationality, and achievement level were made. Significant results were obtained in the following categories concerning attitudes about mathematics. American female students with a female teacher liked mathematics more than American female students with a male teacher …

Jurisprudence And Gender, Robin West Jan 1988

Jurisprudence And Gender, Robin West

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

What is a human being? Legal theorists must, perforce, answer this question: jurisprudence, after all, is about human beings. The task has not proven to be divisive. In fact, virtually all modern American legal theorists, like most modern moral and political philosophers, either explicitly or implicitly embrace what I will call the "separation thesis" about what it means to be a human being: a "human being," whatever else he is, is physically separate from all other human beings. I am one human being and you are another, and that distinction between you and me is central to the meaning of …

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper Jan 1987

The Impact Of Gender Differences On The Ethical Conduct Of Corporate Middle Management, Daniel W. Kemper

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of business ethics and the impact gender has upon the ethical decisions of corporate middle management .

Research has attributed the lack of ethics in businessmen to a decline in moral standards . Because this condition seems to be the rule rather than the exception, it becomes necessary to focus more clearly on the corporate system and the moral development of the individuals who make up this system.

Over the years moral development has been the subject of controversy as many theorists have developed their own ideas as to why people behave morally. …
