Women's Images Effaced: The Literary Portrait In Seventeenth-Century France, Nina Ekstein Mar 1992

Women's Images Effaced: The Literary Portrait In Seventeenth-Century France, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The literary portrait was extremely popular in France for a number of years during the mid-seventeenth century. With roots in salon society, the portrait became a genre in its own right during this period and was eventually incorporated in numerous other genres such as novels, memoirs, theater, and sermons. In this study, I will consider the close association between the initial vogue of portraiture and women, and examine the advantages and problems posed by the genre for women authors. I will trace the evolution of the literary portrait during the seventeenth century, in particular, the manner in which women were …

Feminist Theory, Professional Ethics, And Gender-Related Distinctions In Attorney Negotiating Styles, Lloyd Burton, Larry Farmer, Elizabeth D. Gee, Lorie Johnson Jul 1991

Feminist Theory, Professional Ethics, And Gender-Related Distinctions In Attorney Negotiating Styles, Lloyd Burton, Larry Farmer, Elizabeth D. Gee, Lorie Johnson

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Historically, law has been a male-dominated profession; only recently has it become possible to consider the woman's experience and perspective with respect to law practice generally and negotiation practice in particular. This paper addresses two gender-related issues: first, are there identifiable gender-related distinctions in the negotiating behavior of attorneys? Second, if there are discoverable differences, are they attributable to ethical perspectives linked to gender? In addressing these questions, this article begins by reviewing the literature on feminist theory, moral development, and negotiation theory. These themes are tied together in a review of the small but growing literature on negotiation ethics. …

Assimilation And Accommodation In Family Discourse: A Longitudinal Analysis, Marcia Summers May 1989

Assimilation And Accommodation In Family Discourse: A Longitudinal Analysis, Marcia Summers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Assimilative behavioral strategies provide continuity through maintenance of similarities, traditions, and interactions, while accommodative strategies result in social innovation through the creation of new modes and interactive patterns (J. Block, 1982; J. H. Block, 1983). It was hypothesized that females would show assimilative discourse patterns through the maintenance of conversational topics, while males would show accommodative patterns through more frequent changes in conversational topic, and that the roots of this pattern lie in family conversation. Nineteen families were videotaped at one month, four months, and four years following the birth of their second child. Results showed that gender-differentiated use of …

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 1989

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Written by a feminist (Virginia Woolf), for a bisexual (Vita Sackville-West), about an androgyne (Orlando), the novel Orlando would seem to be the quintessential feminist text. And that, indeed, is what it is in danger of becoming, just as Woolf is in danger of becoming the acclaimed Mother of Us All. In promoting Virginia Woolf's Orlando as a feminist work, feminist critics have picked the right text, but for the wrong reasons. Orlando works as a feminist text not because of what it says about sexual identity but because of what it manages not to say; not because of what …

A Study Of Feminine Role Models Selected By Catholic Women, Miriam F. Kaeser Edd Jan 1987

A Study Of Feminine Role Models Selected By Catholic Women, Miriam F. Kaeser Edd

Dissertations

Women are being challenged to greater levels of growth and self-development because of the expanding opportunities and options available to them in nearly ever facet of society today. Most women need the support and inspiration of other women as role models in order to respond to these challenges. In living out their faith commitment in the present culture, Catholic women also need role models. The Catholic Church has long presented its members with a variety of saints, and with Mary, the mother of Jesus, as role models. Are Mary and women saints viable role models for Catholic women today? If …

The Effects Of Neutral And Sex-Specific Terminology On Sex Stereotyping, Natalie J. Malovich May 1983

The Effects Of Neutral And Sex-Specific Terminology On Sex Stereotyping, Natalie J. Malovich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study was conducted to examine the effects of neutral and sex-specific terminology on sex stereotyping in regard to two primary questions: 1) whether or not the use of sex-neutral terminology alters subjects ' associations to particular words, and 2) whether, in the absence of gender identification, subjects make traditional sex-role assumptions about neutral terms. A third questions examined potential differences in male and female subjects' responses to neutral and sex-specific terminology.

Using a semantic differential technique, 40 male and 40 female volunteer subjects described a number of occupations and roles identified by sex-specific or sex-unspecified labels. Descriptions of those …
