Home As A Place Of Exhibition And Performance: Mayan Household Transformations In Guatemala, Walter E. Little Jan 2000

Home As A Place Of Exhibition And Performance: Mayan Household Transformations In Guatemala, Walter E. Little

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the town of San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Guatemala, has been incorporated into transnational movements of people, commodities, and ideas through tourism, development, and religious evangelism. The Kaqchikel Mayas living there have long looked outward from their community as they embraced, ignored, or criticized these global flows. Contemporary Kaqchikel Mayas have incorporated these global flows into the organization and maintenance of their households, while giving them a local interpretation. Some families have made their homes a place to enact their culture through exhibitions and performances for tourists. Such performances are indicative of the strategies …

Homo/Hetero/Social/Sexual: Gila In Vélez’S La Serrana De La Vera, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 2000

Homo/Hetero/Social/Sexual: Gila In Vélez’S La Serrana De La Vera, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

There is an ever growing body of criticism noting the homosocial underpinnings of comedia society in which women serve primarily to cement the relationships among men. Barbara Simerka, Harry Vélez de Quiñones, and others have convincingly begun to establish the homosocial nature of the stage society in which women, often as objects given signification only when they acquire exchange value, frequently have little say in their marriages or in other important aspects of their lives. The dama, to borrow a definition from Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, is a character who takes her "shape and meaning from a sexuality of which …

James I. Porter. Constructions Of The Classical Body (Book Review), Walter Stevenson Jan 2000

James I. Porter. Constructions Of The Classical Body (Book Review), Walter Stevenson

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

This book brings together in a convenient package a variety of stimulating work by an impressive array of scholars interested in ancient sexuality and gender. Topics covered in the book vary in time and place from Archaic Greece to Medieval Europe, in field from Art History and Anthropology to Literature and Philosophy, and in form from prose poetry to painstaking scholarly exposition. Some critics may say that this volume represents just another ill-defined collection of warmed-over talks and essays; that it tries to plug one more new life-support line into the tired body of 1970s French theory; and that it …

Toward Historizing Gender In Polynesia: On Vilsoni Hereniko’S Woven Gods And Regional Patterns, Jeannette Marie Mageo Mar 1999

Toward Historizing Gender In Polynesia: On Vilsoni Hereniko’S Woven Gods And Regional Patterns, Jeannette Marie Mageo

Pacific Studies

This article considers possible parallels between Rotuman and Samoan gender history through Vilsoni Hereniko’s book Woven Gods. Hereniko draws upon the work of Victor Turner to analyze his Rotuman data, arguing that wedding clowns reverse normative social structures. Wedding clowns are expert female practitioners of Rotuman joking discourse. This discourse is not only ritualized on special occasions but is also an everyday informal discourse and, I argue, is in this sense normative; it counterbalances respect discourse, which is likewise practiced in ritual (ceremonial) contexts but also in everyday polite contexts. In the Samoan precolonial sex-gender system, males and females had …

Gay Rights For Gay Whites: Race, Sexual Identity, And Equal Protection Discourse, Darren L. Hutchinson Jan 1999

Gay Rights For Gay Whites: Race, Sexual Identity, And Equal Protection Discourse, Darren L. Hutchinson

Faculty Articles

My argument proceeds in four parts. Part I situates my discussion of the synergistic relationship among race, class, gender, and sexuality within a broader body of research on the "intersectionality'' of systems of oppression and of identity categories. Part I then examines how my scholarship attempts to advance this literature both substantively and conceptually. Part II expounds my claim that the comparative and essentialist treatment of race and sexuality within pro-gay and lesbian theory and politics marginalizes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons of color and constructs and reinforces the notion that the gay and lesbian community is uniformly white …

Issues Of Spirituality And Gender Differences, Michael J. Brawn Jan 1999

Issues Of Spirituality And Gender Differences, Michael J. Brawn

Theses

This study focuses on issues of spirituality and gender differences. The often interchanged terms of religion and spirituality are described, and the antagonism of science towards religion which has fostered a dearth of literature is reviewed. Implications for counseling are offered, and observations regarding gender differences are provided. The hypothesis that men and women do not differ on measures of spirituality is examined using the spiritual Well-Being Scale (Ellison & Paloutzian, 1983). Study participants were 45 males and 79 females from a church congregation of moderate Protestants. Results suggest that on measures of spiritual well-being, and on indices of religious …

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 1999

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Gendered social norms and institutions are important determinants of agricultural activities in southwestern Burkina Faso. This paper argues that gendered land tenure, in particular, has effects on equity and efficiency. The usual view of women as holders of secondary, or indirect, rights to land must be supplemented by a more nuanced understanding of tenure. Women's rights are in fact considerably more complex than the simple right to fields from their husbands. First, women's rights to property obtained from men may be coupled with other rights and obligations. In many ethnic groups, women have share rights to the harvest of their …

The Private Law Of Race And Sex: An Antebellum Perspective, Adrienne D. Davis Jan 1999

The Private Law Of Race And Sex: An Antebellum Perspective, Adrienne D. Davis

Scholarship@WashULaw

In this article, Professor Adrienne D. Davis traces the interaction of race, sex, and estate law in the antebellum and postbellum South. Through a close analysis of intestate succession and testamentary transfers involving the formerly enslaved, she unearths the role of private law in reconciling and preserving both property rights and racial hierarchy. The article centers on a series of historical case studies involving the rights of formerly enslaved women and their children to postmortem transfers of wealth. While the law of private property generally served to reinforce racial hierarchy, these cases involved the use of property rights -- specifically, …

Disturbing The Peace, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 1998

Disturbing The Peace, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

When concerns of race, gender, and orientation intersect with the Catholic faith and church, the interaction can prove painful and difficult. Experiences of feeling judged or condemned ricochet between camps, the members of each desperate to defend that which they feel is inherent to them, to their identities and self-understanding. But despite the damage that Catholicism can and has inflicted by its striction and history, it retains a mode of outreach to the disaffected—La Virgen, dark and female and still only just coming to be understood. She is controversial and always subject to attempts at political manipulation, but she is …

Herstories - Our History: A Bibliography Of Resources On Western Australian Women's History, Penelope Hetherington Jan 1998

Herstories - Our History: A Bibliography Of Resources On Western Australian Women's History, Penelope Hetherington

Research outputs pre 2011

The centenary of Western Australian Women's suffrage in 1999 has seen a resurgence in interest in the history of women in W.A. While there exists a substantial body of historical resources, extensive guides to these resources are lacking. The majority of general histories of Australian women and Australian suffrage rarely treat W.A. in much detail.

This bibliography is intended as a guide and starting point for scholars and students interested in WA Women's history and the history of childhood. Only secondary sources are represented in this bibliography. A wealth of primary sources on WA women's history can be found at …

White Shadows In The Darkness: Representations Of Polynesian Women In Early Cinema, Margaret Jolly Dec 1997

White Shadows In The Darkness: Representations Of Polynesian Women In Early Cinema, Margaret Jolly

Pacific Studies

This article considers representations of Polynesian women in two early Hollywood films: Moana (1926) and Tabu (1931). It ponders the tensions not just between the cinematic visions of Robert Flaherty and F. W. Murnau, but between ethnographic recuperations and romantic celebrations of Polynesian women, in the light of de Lauretis’s contentions (in Technologies of Gender, 1987) that gendered identities are neither fixed nor immutable, but shifting and fluid effects.
