Background: The soluble C5b-9 (sC5b-9) is a soluble form of the Terminal Complement Complex (TCC) that is released into the circulation with elevated levels, associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients with complement-mediated inflammatory conditions. With the advent of eculizumab and ravulizumab, proper testing for diagnoses and therapeutic monitoring is warranted.

Objectives: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common complication of preterm birth, which can have life-long effects. Commonly used definitions of BPD severity are based on respiratory support at 36 weeks post-menstrual age. The utility of these definitions for tertiary referral centers outside the initial birth hospitalization is unclear.

Study design: Retrospective cohort study of infants born < 34 weeks gestation in the BPD Collaborative registry using three common definitions of BPD severity at 36 weeks post menstrual age and associated their severity with outpatient respiratory outcomes during the first 3 years of life.

Results: BPD severity by all three definitions was applied to 608 patients. Although the definitions had different distributions of BPD severity for the cohort, a majority of participants (75.7%) had moderate/Grade 2 or severe/Grade 3 BPD irrespective of the definition. Using clustered logistic …

Objective: Condomless sex and its related consequences are a persistent problem on college campuses in the United States. This study aimed to examine the association between condom use self-efficacy and condom-decision abdication among college students, and whether this association was moderated by gender.

Participants & methods: Undergraduate college students (N = 212; 50.5% female) were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk as part of a larger online study that examined normative feedback for condom use.

Results: The association between condom use self-efficacy and condom-decision abdication was significantly moderated by gender (B = -0.07, p < .001), such that condom use self-efficacy was associated with condom-decision abdication in college women (B = -0.05, p < .005) but not in college men (B = .02, p = .18).

The National Institutes of Health-funded IMPACC (IMmunoPhenotyping Assessment in a COVID-19 Cohort) evaluated longitudinal clinical and immunological features of human patients hospitalized for COVID-19. This study focuses on comparing the novel NULISAseq assay with the Olink platform using a subset of participants to assess their efficacy in predicting COVID-19 severity and understanding immune response dynamics. Our findings reveal that NULISAseq could provide superior detectability and dynamic range across various targets. PURPOSE: Synchronous bilateral breast cancer (SBBC) presents significant radiotherapy planning challenges due to complex target volumes near critical organs. This study evaluated RapidArc Dynamic (RAD), a novel technique integrating dynamic arcs with static angle modulated ports (STAMPs) via simultaneous GPU-accelerated optimization, against conventional volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for SBBC treatment planning and delivery efficiency.

Lack of reliable diagnostics for the presence, type and severity of infection in patients presenting to emergency departments with non-specific symptoms poses considerable challenges. We developed TriVerity, which uses isothermal amplification of 29 mRNAs and machine learning algorithms on the Myrna instrument to determine likelihoods of bacterial infection, viral infection and need for critical care interventions within 7 days. To validate TriVerity, the SEPSIS-SHIELD study enrolled 1,222 patients with clinically adjudicated infection status and need for critical care intervention within 7 days as endpoints. BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II) is a rare, progressive, X-linked lysosomal storage disease. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with intravenous (IV) idursulfase has been approved for the treatment of patients with MPS II since 2005. The Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS; NCT03292887) was established as a condition of approval to monitor the long-term safety and effectiveness of idursulfase. Here, we report the final results from HOS.

Modeling studies of LF transmission suggest that conducting MDA twice a year could accelerate LF elimination. Few studies have employed participatory research approaches to solicit trainee perspectives related to DEI. Our goal was to utilize group concept mapping (GCM), a mixed-methods participatory research approach, to describe resident perspectives on DEI within a large pediatric residency program. IMPORTANCE: Pediatric obesity rates are rising, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may contribute by promoting stress-induced weight gain. Few studies have examined the association of ACEs with body mass index (BMI) and youth-reported protective factors, particularly among Latinx and Hispanic youths, who face higher rates of ACEs and obesity.

Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) is a leading cause of stroke and dementia with no specific treatment, of which molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. To identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets, we applied Mendelian randomization to examine over 2,500 proteins measured in plasma and, uniquely, cerebrospinal fluid, in relation to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers of cSVD in more than 40,000 individuals. Here we show that 49 proteins are associated with MRI markers of cSVD, most prominently in cerebrospinal fluid. Epidemiological studies have shown that circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) is associated with the risk of breast cancer. However, the role of CRD in mammary gland morphology and aggressive basal mammary tumorigenesis and the molecular mechanism underlying CRD-induced carcinogenesis remain unknown. To investigate the effect of CRD on aggressive tumorigenesis, a genetically engineered mouse model of aggressive breast cancer was used. Congenital Anomalies of Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) can occur in isolation or in conjunction with one or more non-CAKUT associated congenital anomalies or neurodevelopmental disorders (CAKUT+). A molecular cause is not identified in most individuals with CAKUT+. This is due, in part, to uncertainty regarding the efficacy of genetic testing and an incomplete understanding of the genes that cause CAKUT+. Here, we use data from 515 individuals with CAKUT+ (n = 500) or isolated CAKUT (n = 15) to determine the efficacy of clinical exome sequencing (cES) and to identify new phenotype expansions that involve CAKUT. Background: In administrative claims database studies of bronchiectasis, pulmonary exacerbations are usually defined using a fixed period for their start and end, which prevents assessment of exacerbation duration and thereby limits assessment of exacerbation characteristics. Here, we applied a novel cost-based algorithm to characterize exacerbations.

Methods: This cohort study used the Merative MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters database, 1-Jan-2016 to 31-Dec-2022. Patients ≥18 years with bronchiectasis (≥2 outpatient or ≥1 inpatient claim with bronchiectasis; no cystic fibrosis) had 12 months of continuous enrollment before (baseline) and ≥12 months after (follow-up) index (first bronchiectasis claim). Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause severe illness, but little is known about long-term consequences in hospitalized adults. We surveyed adults (>18 years of age) who survived hospitalization for RSV or COVID-19 during February 2022-September 2023 about physical functioning and quality of life; surveys were conducted 6-12 months after hospitalization. We compared outcomes after RSV hospitalization by age (< 60 vs. >60 years) and to those hospitalized for COVID-19 by using multivariable regression models. Among 146 adults hospitalized with RSV, 27.4% reported severe breathlessness and 21.9% poor quality of life at follow-up. Few differences were seen in posthospital illness by age. …

INTRODUCTION: In the phase III LUNAR study, overall survival (OS) with PD-(L)1 inhibitor or docetaxel was improved by adding Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) therapy in patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer progressing on/after platinum-based therapy. This post-hoc analysis evaluated the effects of body mass index (BMI) on TTFields delivery.
