Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have shown substantial benefit for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, resistance to ICIs remains a major clinical challenge. Here, we perform a comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of plasma proteomic profiles to explore the underlying biology of treatment resistance in NSCLC.

METHODS: The analysis was performed on 388 "resistance-associated proteins" (RAPs) that were previously described as pretreatment plasma proteomic predictors within the PROphet computational model designed to predict ICI clinical benefit in NSCLC. Putative tissue origins of the RAPs were explored using publicly available datasets. Enrichment analyses were performed to investigate RAP-related biological …

Kidney disease, the ninth leading cause of death in the United States, suffers from poor diagnostic efficiency (10%). Traditional biopsies use molecular reagents to enhance diagnostic power but are limited by overlapping spatial and chromatic signals, product quality variability, and additional processing. To address these challenges without disrupting routine diagnostics, we implement label-free imaging modalities-stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), second harmonic generation (SHG), and two-photon fluorescence (TPF)-within a single setup. We identify morphological, lipidomic, and metabolic biomarkers in control and diabetic kidney samples at subcellular resolution. Label-free Stimulated Raman Histology (SRH) reveals distinct collagen morphology, mesangial-glomerular volumes, lipid saturation, redox status, …

The Menstrual Cycle And Exercise Performance: A Literature Review, Reagan E. Burchill May 2025

The Menstrual Cycle And Exercise Performance: A Literature Review, Reagan E. Burchill

Honors Thesis

This literature review will examine the current research investigating the relationship between the female menstrual cycle, exercise performance, and exercise instruction. The menstrual cycle is a physiological series of events that includes specific hormones at each stage. These hormones may play a role in how females recover from exercise. This is particularly significant when considering the hormonal fluctuations across the female menstrual cycle, which influence recovery, injury risk, and exercise performance. This could indicate that the suggestions doctors and exercise trainers present to females may not be as beneficial for their health because the research is not specifically tailored to …

Art In Itself: The Vision Of Three Female Mississippi Artists, Jane E. Thomas May 2025

Art In Itself: The Vision Of Three Female Mississippi Artists, Jane E. Thomas

Honors Theses

This thesis is a collection of longform, narrative-style journalistic profiles on artists in Northeast Mississippi. These artists include Carol Roark from Enid and Hannah McCormick and Coulter Fussell from Water Valley. Each profile highlights an individual artist’s work, from her background, inspirations, process and distinctiveness as a creator. These profiles required studio visits and extensive interviews, as well as secondary interviews with clients, gallery owners and art curators. An overarching theme between the three artists is their ability to recognize artistic potential in their immediate surroundings; Roark paints landscapes from her own backyard, McCormick paints scenes from everyday life and …

Increased Fatty Acid Delivery By Tumor Endothelium Promotes Metastatic Outgrowth, Wenqiang Song, Laura C Kim, Verra M Ngwa, Yoonha Hwang, Kevin Ess, Mark R Boothby, Jin Chen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Metastatic outgrowth in distant microscopic niches requires sufficient nutrients, including fatty acids (FAs), to support tumor growth and to generate an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). However, despite the important role of FAs in metastasis, the regulation of FA supply in metastatic niches has not been defined. In this report, we show that tumor endothelium actively promotes outgrowth and restricts antitumor cytolysis by transferring FAs into developing metastatic tumors. We describe a process of transendothelial FA delivery via endosomes that requires mTORC1 activity. Thus, endothelial cell-specific targeted deletion of Raptor (RptorECKO), a unique component of the mTORC1 complex, significantly reduced metastatic …

Chronic hyperglycemia is a major risk factor for glomerular or retinal microangiopathy and cardiovascular complications of type 1 diabetes (T1D). At the interface of genetics and environment, dynamic epigenetic changes associated with hyperglycemia may unravel some of the mechanisms contributing to these T1D complications. In this study, blood samples were collected from 112 young patients at T1D diagnosis and 3 years later in average. Whole genome-wide bisulfite sequencing was used to measure blood DNA methylation changes of about 28 million CpGs at single base resolution over this time. Chronic hyperglycemia was estimated every 3-4 months by HbA1c measurement. Linear regressions …

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections rank among the most prevalent communicable diseases of humans, yet detection of these parasites is mostly restricted to identifying active infection through fecal examinations. Currently, there are no commercial diagnostic tools to identify a prior whipworm or hookworm exposure, and the few serological assays for roundworm infection have not been well validated for crossreactivity or infections in humans. Such diagnostic restrictions limit the range of scientific and clinical questions that surround STH exposures and their implicated relationship to chronic diseases, such as autoimmunity, allergy, and cancer. The goal of this investigation was to evaluate the diagnostic …

Youth placed in U.S. juvenile detention facilities face multilevel barriers that contribute to disparate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes when compared to their peers in the general adolescent population. Minimal information is available about evidence-based interventions that have been effective in changing these outcomes. The aim of this scoping review was to focus on the current state of SRH and identify recommendations for SRH care. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for scoping reviews guidelines, we searched electronic databases for publications published through March 2024. The search terms were designed to find intervention studies focusing …

Effective Interventions For Women With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Kathryn Antoinette Gonzales May 2025

Effective Interventions For Women With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Kathryn Antoinette Gonzales

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Women diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often undergo powerless treatment interventions according to research. Institutionalized inequalities among service systems challenge women to receive access, begin, engage, and complete mental health services for PTSD. This mixed-methods systematic review sought to determine interventions that are effective for treating this client population. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) tool was used to screen four different electronic databases: PsycINFO, Google Scholar, EBSCO, and OneSearch to identify peer-reviewed articles under a purposive sampling method strategy. Of the 159 studies screened, 15 met the inclusion criteria for this review (n =15). …

Sports Injury Prevention - Epidemiological Analysis Of Concussion Mechanisms In Female Soccer Players: A Review Of Neiss Data (2020–2023), Caroline A. Bertalotto

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Concussions are a significant concern in women’s soccer, with many studies showing that women have a higher rate of having them than compared to men. The number of concussions in athletes have raised concerns about long-term health and calls for a deeper look into ways to prevent them from occurring. The purpose of this study is to review the epidemiological data related to the mechanisms of concussions as a result of soccer, specifically within female participants. The data was obtained from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) from the years 2020 through 2023. Specifically, the narrative was used to …

There is an increasing need for biomarkers of senescent cell burden to facilitate the selection of participants for clinical trials. p16 Ink4a is encoded by the CDKN2A locus, which produces five variant transcripts in humans, two of which encode homologous p16 proteins: p16Inka4a, encoded by p16_variant 1, and p16ɣ, encoded by p16_variant 5. While distinct quantitative polymerase chain reaction primers can be designed for p16_variant 5, primers for p16_variant 1 also measure p16_variant 5 (p16_variant 1 + 5). In a recent clinical trial evaluating the effects of the senolytic combination, dasatinib + quercetin (D + Q), on …
