Moderated multiple regression (MMR) is frequently used to test moderation hypotheses in the behavioral and social sciences. In MMR with a categorical moderator, between-groups heteroscedasticity is not uncommon and can inflate Type I error rates or reduce statistical power. Compared with research on remedial procedures that can mitigate the effects of this violated assumption, less research attention has focused on statistical procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity. In the current article, we briefly review such procedures. Then, using Monte Carlo methods, we compare the performance of various procedures that can be used to detect between-groups heteroscedasticity in …

Simulating Uniform- And Triangular- Based Double Power Method Distributions, Mohan Pant, Todd C. Headrick
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive
Power method (PM) polynomials have been used for simulating non-normal distributions in a variety of settings such as toxicology research, price risk, business-cycle features, microarray analysis, computer adaptive testing, and structural equation modeling. A majority of these applications are based on the method of matching product moments (e.g., skew and kurtosis). However, estimators of skew and kurtosis can be (a) substantially biased, (b) highly dispersed, or (c) influenced by outliers. To address this limitation, two families of double-uniform-PM and double-triangular-PM distributions are characterized through the method of 𝐿-moments using a doubling technique. The 𝐿-moment based procedure is contrasted with the …

University of Texas Arlington Libraries developed a flexible template and workbook for the use of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) in Libraries. The MOU team felt the time was right for development of the template and workbook due to the shift from transactional work to long term projects occurring in many libraries and the resulting need to document project plans, timelines and expectations for all involved parties. We have found the adoption and writing of a MOU between the Libraries and external partners helps to alleviate tensions and set reasonable expectations. By clarifying those expectations and timelines, the library is able …

This chapter discusses aspects of Undergraduates Speak: Our Rights and Access, a library-initiated and student-led pilot project aimed at advancing educational initiatives in the realm of scholarly communication. The project provided undergraduate students with opportunities to engage in experiential learning. Experiential learning, commonly defined as "learning by doing,"emphasizes the role that experience and self-reflection play in the learning process. In recent years, universities across the country have increasingly committed to providing such opportunities for undergraduate students. One reason for this emphasis is because experiential activities have a demonstrated impact on student retention and engagement. Among these high-impact practices are undergraduate …

Iterative design is a buzzword bandied about more liberally than its principles are employed; what happens when we embrace intelligent risk-taking and empower students with legitimate agency to solve the myriad struggles of building a makerspace, running the space efficiently, creating marketing materials, and utilizing the tools within to make the world a better place?
Understanding Faculty Use Of The Learning Management System, Jason Rhode
Understanding Faculty Use Of The Learning Management System, Jason Rhode
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
The learning management system (LMS) has become a critical tool for nearly all institutions of higher education, and a driving force in online learning. According to a 2014 report by the Educause Center for Analysis and Research, 99% of higher education institutions have an LMS in place, and the LMS is used by 85% of faculty and 83% of students. This was not always the case, however. There was a time in the not-so-distant past when using an LMS was considered highly innovative. Understanding the growth and adoption of the LMS is a stepping stone to understanding how faculty may …

Workplace Faculty Friendships And Work-Family Culture, Megumi Watanabe, Christina Falci
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Although various work-family policies are available to faculty members, many underuse these policies due to concerns about negative career consequences. Therefore, we believe it is important to develop an academic work culture that is more supportive of work-family needs. Using network data gathered from faculty members at a Midwestern university, this study investigated the relationship between friendship connections with colleagues and perceived work-family supportiveness in the department. It also explored the role of parental status in the relationship for men and women. Results show that faculty with larger friendship networks have more positive perceptions of work-family culture compared to faculty …

Exploration Of Factors Affecting Nurse Faculty Use Or Resistance To Online Education, Lisa M. Harless
Exploration Of Factors Affecting Nurse Faculty Use Or Resistance To Online Education, Lisa M. Harless
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The substantial increase in online nursing program enrollment demands that nurse educators be adept in the delivery of online education; however, a significant challenge exists in how to deliver practice-based nursing education in the online environment. Teaching online requires a change in the traditional role of the educator accompanied by the effective use of online learning technologies. Some studies suggest that faculties remain pessimistic to online delivery of education and do not participate, yet few objectively examine variables that influence resistance or use. Included in this dissertation are two manuscripts. The first manuscript defines resistance and addresses prominent concerns associated …

Integrating Information Into The Engineering Design Process, Michael Fosmire, David Radcliffe
Purdue Information Literacy Handbooks
Engineering design is a fundamental problem-solving model used by the discipline. Effective problem-solving requires the ability to find and incorporate quality information sources. To teach courses in this area effectively, educators need to understand the information needs of engineers and engineering students and their information gathering habits. This book provides essential guidance for engineering faculty and librarians wishing to better integrate information competencies into their curricular offerings. The treatment of the subject matter is pragmatic, accessible, and engaging. Rather than focusing on specific resources or interfaces, the book adopts a process-driven approach that outlasts changing information technologies.

Muscle Specific Nucleus Ambiguus Neurons Isolation And Culturing, Ignacio Hernandez-Morato, Michael J. Pitman, Sansar Sharma
NYMC Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury leads to a regenerative state. However, the reinnervation process is highly non-selective. Growing axons are often misrouted and establish aberrant synapsis to abductor or adductor muscles. Determining the complex properties of abductor and adductor motoneurons in a neuron culture, may lay the groundwork for future studies on axon guidance, leading to a clinical treatment for a selective reinnervation. NEW METHOD: In the present study we develop a neuron culture protocol to isolate recurrent laryngeal nerve abductor and adductor motoneurons in order to study their unique properties. Comparison with existing methods the best period to perform the …

The mechanisms by which prostanoids contribute to the maintenance of whole body water homeostasis are complex and not fully understood. The present study demonstrates that an EP3-dependent feedback mechanism contributes to the regulation of water homeostasis under high-salt conditions. Rats on a normal diet and tap water were placed in metabolic cages and given either sulprostone (20 μg·kg·day) or vehicle for 3 days to activate EP3 receptors in the thick ascending limb (TAL). Treatment was continued for another 3 days in rats given either 1% NaCl in the drinking water or tap water. Sulprostone decreased expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) …
