How To Incubate Your Dragon: Methodologies For Collecting And Analyzing Data On Learning In Academic Makerspaces, Morgan Chivers, Martin K. Wallace
UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive
We believe we have successfully developed a sound, while certainly not perfect, methodology for measuring the learning taking place in academic library makerspaces using student self-assessment. As we continue to cultivate our methodology and collect more data, we are confident the data will become more reliable and generalizable, with the ultimate goal of establishing (inter)national standards for assessment of transdisciplinary, hands-on learning experiences. This paper details our data collection, processing, and initial analysis methodologies, as well as a frank discussion of criticisms of our approach, lessons learned, and a first look at trends emerging from that data. We conclude with …

Engaging Master’S Level Students In Research At Primarily Teaching-Focused Institutions, Angie O'Gieblyn, Asha Mohammed Kadir, Philip Treiber
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Counselor educators at primarily teaching focused institutions often struggle to find both time and interested students to support an active research agenda. Engaging clinically minded students in scientific research is central to their development and also fought with challenges (Jorgensen & Duncan, 2014; Huber & Savage, 2009; Steel & Rawls, 2014). The goal of this presentation is to provide counselor educators with an overview of the literature regarding research identity in Master’s level counseling students, as well as providing them with practical suggestions for increasing research collaborations with their students. The presentation will also include a discussion of shared experiences, …

Education Needs In Research Data Management For Science-Based Disciplines: Self-Assessment Surveys Of Graduate And Faculty At Two Public Universities, Judith E. Pasek, Jennifer Mayer
University Libraries Publications
Research data management is a prominent and evolving consideration for the academic community, especially in scientific disciplines. This research study surveyed 131 graduate students and 79 faculty members in the sciences at two public doctoral universities to determine the importance, knowledge, and interest levels around research data management training and education. The authors adapted 12 competencies for measurement in the study. Graduate students and faculty ranked the following areas most important among the 12 competencies: ethics and attribution, data visualization, and quality assurance. Graduate students indicated they were least knowledgeable and skilled in data curation and re-use, metadata and data …

PURPOSE: To explore faculty perspectives on which characteristics of high-performing clerkship students are most important when determining an honors or top grade designation for clinical performance.
METHOD: In 2016-2017, the authors surveyed faculty (teaching ward attendings) for internal medicine clerkships and 1 pediatrics clerkship in inpatient settings at 5 U.S. academic medical centers. Survey items were framed around competencies, 24 student characteristics, and attitudes toward evaluation. Factor analysis examined constructs defining high-performing students.
RESULTS: Of 516 faculty invited, 319 (62%) responded. The top 5 characteristics as rated by respondents were taking ownership, clinical reasoning, curiosity, dependability, and high ethical standards …

Giving Faculty A Public Voice: Higher Education Must Incentivize Its Faculty To Publicly Disseminate Their Ideas, Grant K. Kimberlin
Giving Faculty A Public Voice: Higher Education Must Incentivize Its Faculty To Publicly Disseminate Their Ideas, Grant K. Kimberlin
The Liminal: Interdisciplinary Journal of Technology in Education
This paper considers higher education’s response to fake news to be a responsibility to more effectively communicate its ideas to the general public. Considering how the changing information landscape cultivates and interprets knowledge increasingly with less and less academic involvement, the issue of a post-truth world renders it more necessary than ever for higher education to be an active participant in public discourse. Further, this paper acknowledges the difficulties of doing so and advocates providing career incentives to faculty to take up this challenge. Current incentives reward self-referential discourse within academia, but given the changing times it is crucial for …

Collaborating On Flipped Library Sessions: 8 Best Practices For Faculty & Librarians, Nicole R. Webber, Stephanie Wiegand
Collaborating On Flipped Library Sessions: 8 Best Practices For Faculty & Librarians, Nicole R. Webber, Stephanie Wiegand
University Libraries Publications
Library instruction varies in format but often manifests in the librarian teaching a single, isolated class session—what librarians refer to as a “one-shot.” Many challenges accompany this traditional format, including time-constraints, disengaged audiences, and little understanding on the part of the student as to how the library instruction integrates with course content. Flipped Learning methods can help counter these challenges even when the overall course is not based on a flipped model. They liberate librarians and faculty from the one-shot model and expand opportunities for library instruction to occur at multiple times in a course, to be delivered virtually or …

Conceptualization Of Faculty Work Motivation: Overcoming The Impasse, Julie Nikolaeva Thompson
Conceptualization Of Faculty Work Motivation: Overcoming The Impasse, Julie Nikolaeva Thompson
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The work motivation literature is at an impasse. At the same time, changing economic and social conditions necessitate an ongoing transformation for how organizations motivate their workforce. Although changes in the nature of work have captured the attention of researchers, calls for more research to further develop work motivation theory have largely gone unnoticed. The scarcity of new theoretical research contributes to a lack of contextual understanding in work motivation. As such, organizational leaders continue to develop interventions based on the findings of potentially outdated work motivation theories. This may lead to diminished work motivation, productivity, and commitment, particularly for …

Changing Future Faculty's Conceptions Of Sotl, Darryl Reano, Stephanie Masta, Jon Harbor
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) programs provide graduate students across all disciplines with professional development that addresses a range of faculty responsibilities. The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) combines education research with the practice of teaching by implementing, disseminating, and applying research on educational practice and interventions. During a PFF program at a public university, we used a pre-post writing prompt to examine changes in future faculty’s conceptions of SoTL. Pre-workshop responses included misconceptions that indicated unfamiliarity with SoTL. Post-workshop responses had an increased emphasis on sharing outcomes from educational interventions. Only 8% of pre-workshop responses included all main elements …

Cultural Factors That Impact Latina/O College Student Success At Predominantly-White Institutions: Past And Current Knowledge For Educators, Ricardo Montelongo
Diversity, Social Justice, and the Educational Leader
As the new century approached in 2000, educational leaders, practitioners, and researchers were continuing to understand the educational experiences of the fastest growing student population in the United States – Latina/os. Knowledge on factors influencing outcomes for this group were produced to inform educators. However, Latina/os continue to face barriers and challenges at all levels in their pursuit of educational opportunity, especially in higher education. The significance of the demographic shifts Latina/os bring to education should give educators a sense of urgency to better understand cultural factors that impact Latina/o student success. This paper will provide an overview of the …
