The absence of research around the experiences of faculty with (invisible) disabilities is critically needed within the academy. Often (invisible) disabilities remain in the shadows because they are non-apparent until publicly disclosed. Equitable access, sustainable resources, and university communications around (invisible) disabilities can impact disclosure decisions.

This social justice mixed methods inquiry used an explanatory sequential design to explore factors that contributed to faculty disclosure and/or non-disclosure of their (invisible) disability(ies). Based on reported success and retention rates, there is a need to improve education in 2-year colleges for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. Instructors’ assessment knowledge and self-efficacy have not been studied in 2-year or STEM higher education. Although academic freedom is considered a pillar of the academy in the United States, little legal precedent has been established to legitimize faculty academic freedom. Moreover, no legislation or case law outlines a hierarchy of academic freedom whereby institutional academic freedom may be positioned as authoritative over faculty academic freedom or vice versa. As a result, many institutions of higher education have violated academic freedom and then subsequently apologized for overstepping legal boundaries, stemming from infringing upon individuals’ rights that have not been codified through law. More than 40 faculty members participated in this year’s conference, representing multiple disciplines: languages and literature, psychology, biology, mathematics, government, Catholic studies, art and design, communications, chemistry and physics, history, theatre arts, theology/religious studies, media and sociology. There were 30 talks that covered various topics, such as the civil war, theatre, body image and Foodstagrams (Instagram posts about food).

Email is one of the most prolific forms of communication in the world. As colleges and universities move more student experiences online, faculty members and advisors need to understand how to best communicate with students. In an attempt to understand how faculty and advisors write, and, more importantly, how students read, I developed this two-phase mixed methods investigation. In Phase I, I collected nine writing samples from 19 faculty and advisor participants and dissected the samples with Pennebaker Conglomerate’s 2015 Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program. The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the transition to an online educational platform for future health professional students at a southern health sciences system due to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) virus. As reversing the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is impossible, the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is considered as the precursor of AD, has become a more tractable goal. Because both brain structural and functional alterations have been observed in MCI patients, many multimodal fusion approaches have been proposed to classify MCI from normal controls (NC) in clinical studies. Given the complex relationships between brain structure and function, deep learning based models can be helpful in revealing potential non-linear relationships buried in multimodal neuroimaging data. Latinx students are likely to enter postsecondary education at a community college. This phenomenon has led to the increase in community colleges being designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions. The designation of Hispanic Serving is not driven by mission, but rather by number of enrolled students who identify as Latinx. This preliminary descriptive study examined the perceptions of faculty at four Hispanic Serving community colleges in Texas regarding their proficiency on leadership competencies for faculty, whether there were differences in the perceptions of Latinx and non-Latinx faculty members, and whether certain leadership competencies influence faculty members’ decisions to pursue leadership opportunities. …

Faculty and librarian collaboration is key in the quest for information literacy. As part of the reaccreditation effort at Lord Fairfax Community College -- a two-year institution in northwestern Virginia -- the QEP Leadership Team sought LFCC Librarians’ assistance in a multifaceted, 5-year, information literacy initiative. This effort included the addition of a librarian to the all-faculty QEP Leadership Team, the redesign of composition courses, and professional development through a new LFCC program: “Seeking the Truth: Faculty-Librarian Collaboration Mini-Grants.”

Our research group is interested in studying the effects of phthalate exposure on the Drosophila model. According to the literature, the Akh gene are disrupted by exposure to phthalates, which disrupts insulin-signaling (Williams et all., 2016). Our molecular biology lab recently performed CRISPR experiment (BioRad, 12012608EDU). We hypothesize that if we disrupt the same insulin signaling gene using CRISPR, we will not phenocopy the phthalate exposure results. CRISPR Cas9 is an advanced gene editing tool, that allows the detection and disruption of a target sequence in DNA. Biorad CRISPR experiment uses E. coli to demonstrate what happens when the X-gal …

Retrieval practice is a well-researched cognitive strategy for improving memory for target information. A substantial amount of empirical research from several decades shows that retrieval practice has a positive effect on long-term retention of information. The current study aims to assess the effects of review activities using retrieval practice on long-term retention of course materials, and to examine their effect on test anxiety. Although some research has examined the impact of retrieval practice in course settings, there have been few controlled experiments and little research looking at the impacts on test anxiety.
