Collaborative Challenges Between Educational Accessibility Coordinators And Adjunct Faculty In Supporting Autism Spectrum Students, Tamara Faure, Pietro Antonio Sasso
Collaborative Challenges Between Educational Accessibility Coordinators And Adjunct Faculty In Supporting Autism Spectrum Students, Tamara Faure, Pietro Antonio Sasso
New York Journal of Student Affairs
Accessibility of educational accommodations has increased but can be frequently inconsistent for undergraduates with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The didactic relationship between educational accessibility staff with faculty, who are increasingly adjuncts, facilitates many course-learning accommodations. This descriptive phenomenological study explored the perceptions and professional experiences of educational accessibility coordinators with adjunct faculty in their implementation of learning accommodation for undergraduates with ASD. Findings from this study suggested that accessibility coordinators negotiated expectations of unprepared adjunct faculty and ASD students to address issues throughout the semester.
Coordinators believed ASD students struggled to navigate their experiences with adjunct professors because they were …

Learning Communities Promote Pedagogical Metacognition In Higher Education Faculty, Audrey J. Tocco, Lauren A. Mehrhoff, Haley M. Osborn, Lyda F. Mccartin, Molly M. Jameson
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Pedagogical metacognition, or the reflective and reflexive actions associated with teaching practice, strengthens the planning, monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment of teaching in higher education faculty. Learning communities are optimal environments to foster this active teaching reflection. This study incorporated pedagogical metacognition into a faculty learning community curriculum and explored its impacts on higher education instructors’ reflective and reflexive practices. Faculty participants completed monthly metacognitive reflections for one academic year, each corresponding to a research-based principle of learning. Qualitative analysis indicated that faculty learning community participants recognized their lack of pedagogical training, successfully reflected on their teaching strategies, identified areas for …

Intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual assault, and stalking are consequential public health and safety issues with wide reaching impacts on emerging adults, including those on college campuses in the United States. In response to high rates of violence among college student populations, universities are developing campus-based advocacy (CBA) programs, which aim to support survivors of interpersonal violence through supportive connections, resource acquisition, and safety planning. However, little data exists related to their impact on key student-survivor outcomes. Thus, this study aims to understand (a) the approach CBA programs use to address safety and academic concerns of student-survivors, and (b) the …
Faculty-Student And Student-Student Connections Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic, Fatma Ouled Salem
Faculty-Student And Student-Student Connections Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic, Fatma Ouled Salem
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic expedited the shift toward distance education by forcing institutions to adapt to the limitations of social distancing mandates. This resulted in a general sense of disconnection and isolation, compounding the other adverse effects of the pandemic. Since faculty-student and student-student connections are consistently identified as best practices in distance counselor education, the aim of this descriptive phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of counselor educators during the COVID-19 pandemic relating to faculty-student and student-student connections. A phenomenological framework was used to suspend presuppositions of the phenomenon and to describe the lived experiences of participants. In-depth …

The Role Of Culture In The Justification And Perpetuation Of Domestic Violence: The Perspectives Of Service Providers In Kyrgyzstan, Saltanat Childress, Nibedita Shrestha, Kanykei Kenensarieva, Jildyz Urbaeva, Rachel Voth Schrag
SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
The study explores the perspectives of service providers on cultural and social reasons used to justify domestic violence in Kyrgyzstan. Results indicate that cultural norms, notably patriarchal customs, immense pressure put on women to save the marriage, stigma of divorce, low status assigned to women, wide acceptance of violence as natural, and fear of retaliation were major reasons that perpetuated domestic violence. Scholars, policymakers, and service providers must collaborate to actively dispel widely accepted beliefs about gender, marriage, and women's status, and to break the cycle of abuse providing help at the individual and community levels.

From The Shadows To The Spotlight: Centering The Experiences Of Faculty With (Invisible) Disabilities, Tiffany Gray
From The Shadows To The Spotlight: Centering The Experiences Of Faculty With (Invisible) Disabilities, Tiffany Gray
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
The absence of research around the experiences of faculty with (invisible) disabilities is critically needed within the academy. Often (invisible) disabilities remain in the shadows because they are non-apparent until publicly disclosed. Equitable access, sustainable resources, and university communications around (invisible) disabilities can impact disclosure decisions.
This social justice mixed methods inquiry used an explanatory sequential design to explore factors that contributed to faculty disclosure and/or non-disclosure of their (invisible) disability(ies). For some faculty, the “choice” around disclosure was non-negotiable as a result of a myriad of reasons, one being their access needs. The overall process, navigation, and decision making …

A Thematic Analysis Of The Attitudes And Perceptions Of Faculty Towards Inclusion Of Interprofessional Education In Healthcare Curriculum, Jitendra Singh, Tracy Eisenschenk
International Journal of Health Sciences Education
This qualitative study aimed to explore attitudes and perceptions of faculty towards inclusion of interprofessional education (IPE) in healthcare curriculum. Efforts were made to explore faculty members’ definition of IPE, significance of including IPE in content and curriculum and resources available to implement such initiatives in healthcare education programs. Further, challenges faced while including IPE in curriculum were also explored. Face to face semi structured interviews were conducted, and a six-step thematic analysis framework was utilized to analyze the collected data. Further, four dimension criteria was utilized to establish the rigor of the study. Eleven participants across undergraduate and graduate …

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are at the forefront of the United States (US) public health agenda due to their tremendous human and financial burden. Further, disproportionately high ADRD rates among racial/ethnic minorities require incorporating the unique perspectives of racially and ethnically diverse scientists, which will necessitate diversifying the scientific workforce that investigates disparities in aging. The purpose of this paper is to describe the training and mentorship initiatives of the National Institute on Aging (NIA)-funded Carolina Center on Alzheimer's Disease and Minority Research, emphasizing lessons learned from our engagement with underrepresented minority and minoritized (URM) Scientists. We highlight …

The Impact Of Faculty Feedback On Student Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Relationships, Lauren Trejo
The Impact Of Faculty Feedback On Student Perceptions Of Faculty-Student Relationships, Lauren Trejo
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitive study examined four communication sciences and disorders (CSD) graduate students’ experiences with feedback from CSD faculty members to understand how it affected their relationships with faculty. Review of the literature revealed the importance and impact of feedback; however, it offered little research examining feedback within the field of CSD. Graduate students who completed their undergraduate degrees in CSD were interviewed to reflect on feedback experiences they received from faculty during their undergraduate and graduate education. The students were presented with two mock papers with differing feedback styles and were asked their reactions to the feedback. It was discovered …
Faculty And Dean Attitudes Toward Institutional Civic Responsibility, Mutual Trust, And Civic Mindedness At Two Year Colleges, David W. Kobilka
Faculty And Dean Attitudes Toward Institutional Civic Responsibility, Mutual Trust, And Civic Mindedness At Two Year Colleges, David W. Kobilka
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Two year colleges are often characterized as America’s “democracy colleges” implying a difficult to implement dual mission of democratizing education for all, and advancing the democratic purpose of civic engagement. Although such goals may be explicit in a college’s mission statement, how faculty or their deans receive that mission is not well-documented. Research suggests that for a college to advance a civic mission, those involved must themselves be civically minded. Moreover, for any mission to succeed, faculty and their deans must trust one-another. However, there is scant research specific to two-year colleges in these areas. This research attempted to address …
