Understanding cognitive states from fMRI data have yet to be investigated to its full extent due to its complex nature. In this work, the problem of understanding cognitive fatigue among TBI patients has been formulated as a multi-class classification problem. We built a Spatio-temporal encoder model using convolutions and LSTMs as the building blocks to extract spatial features and to model the 4D nature of fMRI scans. To learn a better representation of the data and the condition, we used a self-supervised learning technique called "Contrastive Learning" to pretrain our encoder with a public dataset BOLD5000 and further fine-tuned our …

Examining The Impact Of Gender, Caretaking On Faculty Research Productivity, Tenure And Promotion Progress During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erin O'Mara Kunz, Corinne Brion, Hannah Kessler, Eden Michelson

Reports from the Gender Equity Research Fellowship

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the working and home lives of faculty. The largest impact was felt by women and caregivers, who suffered a staggering setback to their research productivity throughout the pandemic, and declines in research productivity have negative downstream consequences for tenure and promotion. The current research sought to examine gender and caregiving differences in research productivity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic among University of Dayton faculty. In two primary studies, research-active faculty were surveyed (Study 1) and interviewed (Study 2) to better understand the impact of gender and caregiving on research productivity during the pandemic. Study 1 …

Purpose: Equity in assessment and grading has become imperative across medical education. Although strategies to promote equity exist, there may be variable penetrance across institutions. The objectives of this study were to identify strategies internal medicine (IM) clerkship directors (CDs) use to reduce inequities in assessment and grading and explore IM CDs' perceptions of factors that impede or facilitate the implementation of these strategies.

Method: From October to December 2021, the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine conducted its annual survey of IM core CDs at 137 U.S. and U.S. territory-based medical schools. This …

Incorporating Job Competition And Matching To An Indicator-Based Transportation Equity Analysis For Auto And Transit In Dallas-Fort Worth Area, Seyedsoheil Sharifiasl, Subham Kharel, Qisheng Pan May 2023

Incorporating Job Competition And Matching To An Indicator-Based Transportation Equity Analysis For Auto And Transit In Dallas-Fort Worth Area, Seyedsoheil Sharifiasl, Subham Kharel, Qisheng Pan

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Transportation equity is a vital but vague issue for planners and engineers in the United States, where mobility-based transportation planning has triggered the disproportionate distribution of benefits and burdens in the transportation system. Previously, transportation equity studies have evaluated equity using different transportation service metrics and socio-demographic factors. Job accessibility is one principal metric for transportation quality as it directly relates to a community's economic prosperity. While most equity studies analyze aggregate accessibility for a single mode, our study measures blue-collar and white-collar job accessibilities for automobile and transit by incorporating job proximity, competition, and matching, using the Dallas-Fort Worth …

Assignment Negotiation: Critical Race Theory And Educational Leadership Preparation Program, Ericka Roland

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

The current tensions around racism in public schooling prompted Dr. Edwards, an assistant professor in educational leadership and policy studies, to teach critical race theory and assign a racism audit for doctoral students to use the theory in practice. Students were to complete their racism audit on their school campus. However, several students refused to complete the assignment. Some students refused for fear of job repercussions, while others accused Dr. Edwards of indoctrinating them with liberal political ideologies. This case explores the complexity and dilemmas that faculty encounter as they engage in antiracism leadership teaching during a time of racial …

Reducing Officer-Involved Deaths Of Civilians In Urban Areas: Forecasting The Effects Of Departmental Policies, James D. Kelsay, Ian A. Silver, Leah C. Butler Apr 2023

Reducing Officer-Involved Deaths Of Civilians In Urban Areas: Forecasting The Effects Of Departmental Policies, James D. Kelsay, Ian A. Silver, Leah C. Butler

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Recent police-involved deaths of Black civilians have sparked public outcry and demand for police reforms. However, many departmental policies intended to reduce the lethal use-of-force by police officers lack empirical support for their effectiveness. To address this shortcoming, a Bayesian random intercept model is used to forecast the effects of eight departmental policies on the number of police-involved civilian deaths across 66 police departments. Results suggest that although several policies are associated with a reduction in officer-involved deaths of civilians in some police departments, they are unlikely to eliminate officer-involved deaths completely. Specifically, we observed that introducing additional departmental policies …

Addressing Bias From Faculty Through Implementing Bias Training, Tori A. Henning Apr 2023

Addressing Bias From Faculty Through Implementing Bias Training, Tori A. Henning

Masters Projects

Research has indicated that college students experience bias from college faculty on a regular bias. However, there is no mandated training for college faculty on the various forms of bias and the impact that it can have on students’ ability to be successful. While bias influences many students, students of color, women, LGBTQ+ students, and students from of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds experience bias at greater rates than white students. This project explores how the various forms of bias, the training that college faculty receive, student development theory, and how bias impacts students’ success and their sense of belonging …

Learn, Reflect, Practice, Discuss: A Professional Development Pilot For Clinical Nurse Educators, Jessica Savage, Linda Wofford Dr., David Phillippi Dr.

DNP Projects

Abstract

AIM: The aim of this project was to assess the effect of a professional development pilot on the self-efficacy among clinical nurse educators toward evaluation and assessment of students in the clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: Nursing schools employ clinical nurse faculty with varied levels of experience and formal education in teaching. Positive student outcomes are dependent on the competency of their nursing faculty, yet best practices to train and support the professional growth of clinical faculty have not yet been identified.

METHOD: A multi-modal professional development pilot including online-learning modules, self-reflection, practice-learning, and peer-mentoring components was designed and implemented with …

Resilience And Mental Health In College Students, Indyah Ferrouillet, Bemsimbom Nkuo, Daniel Ceccoli, Patrick J. Cooper Apr 2023

Resilience And Mental Health In College Students, Indyah Ferrouillet, Bemsimbom Nkuo, Daniel Ceccoli, Patrick J. Cooper

Student Publications and Presentations

Research suggests a moderate incidence of depression, anxiety, and especially stress among college students (Ramon-Arbues et al., 2020). It is reasonable to believe that these mental health outcomes might be inversely correlated with resilience, the ability to adapt to new challenges. In this study, we hypothesize an inverse correlation between resilience (as measured by the self-reported BRS-6) and stress, anxiety, and depression (as measured by the DASS-21). In other words, college students who feel resilient will experience greater mental health and wellness. To build on previous research that suggests these effects in females only (Ahmed & Julius, 2015), biological sex …

Trauma-Informed Practices Of Mental Health Providers Around The Globe, Kathleen Scott, Jon Sperry, Debra L. Ainbinder, Lydia Fink, Amanda Mohammed

Student Publications and Presentations

This study examined trauma-informed practices of mental health professionals from 25 different countries. The literature indicates that many practitioners feel unprepared and unequipped to therapeutically work with individuals who have experienced trauma-related psychological disorders (SAMHSA, 2014). This poster highlights the deficits in trauma-informed competency among practitioners from around the globe, offers recommendations to emphasize graduate and post-graduate trauma-informed training, and also offers suggestions for future trauma competencies.

Plastic Water Bottles, Source Of Phthalates?, Grace Gouws, Emily Pintilie, Erika L. Doctor

Student Publications and Presentations

Phthalates are plasticizers which are added to many materials to increase their flexibility, durability, longevity, and transparency. These compounds are commonly found in personal-care products, plastic bottles, medical tubing, and in foods (Centers for Disease Control, n.d). Due to their prevalence in our everyday lives, and their ability to act as endocrine disruptors in humans, knowing the exact source of phthalate exposure is of interest to public health. One common source is the contact between food we consume and the plastic containers they are stored in. This study was conducted to determine thepresence of phthalates in disposable water bottles after …
