Dissociation Predicts Later Attention Problems In Sexually Abused Children, Julie B Kaplow, Erin Hall, Karestan C Koenen, Kenneth A Dodge, Lisa Amaya-Jackson
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
OBJECTIVE: The goals of this research are to develop and test a prospective model of attention problems in sexually abused children that includes fixed variables (e.g., gender), trauma, and disclosure-related pathways.
METHODS: At Time 1, fixed variables, trauma variables, and stress reactions upon disclosure were assessed in 156 children aged 8-13 years. At the Time 2 follow-up (8-36 months following the initial interview), 56 of the children were assessed for attention problems.
RESULTS: A path analysis involving a series of hierarchically nested, ordinary least squares multiple regression analyses indicated two direct paths to attention problems including the child's relationship to …

Is Civil Discourse Simply About Good Manners, June Speakman
Is Civil Discourse Simply About Good Manners, June Speakman
Reason and Respect
Campuses around the country are confronting a movement that represents a segment of students and faculty who claim to have been forced into silence for decades. Civil discourse cannot be promoted as a means of suppressing this movement. Rather, civil discourse must be a mechanism for engaging faculty and students alike on our common ground.

An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West
An Analysis Of Faculty Perspectives On The Theory And Practice Of Academic Freedom, Robin R. West
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Academic freedom is a concept said to be poorly defined and misunderstood. Much of the literature on academic freedom suggests that the presumed professorial right is threatened by a variety of internal and external forces. This study examines the theory and practice of academic freedom within the context of instruction in the university classroom. The study attempts to determine if there is a difference between faculty perspectives about the theoretical constructs of academic freedom and its praxis in instructional practice. In other words, "this is what I believe academic freedom is and does, but here is what I have experienced." …

Freeriders And Diversity In The Legal Academy: A New Dirty Dozen List, Ediberto Román, Christopher B. Carbot
Freeriders And Diversity In The Legal Academy: A New Dirty Dozen List, Ediberto Román, Christopher B. Carbot
Faculty Publications
Latina and Latino student enrollment in U.S. law schools the last few decades has increased. This increase, however, has not resulted in a comparable increase in Latino and Latina law professors. To foster diversity in law school faculties and to increase Latina representation, the “Dirty Dozen List” was published. The List was comprised of the top twelve U.S. law schools located in high Latina populated areas but lacking a single Latina professor on the faculty. The List served to increase awareness of the lack of diversity at some of the nation’s top legal institutions, as well as “shame” these schools …

Deaning For Whom? Means And Ends In Legal Education, Hon. Kristin Booth Glen
Deaning For Whom? Means And Ends In Legal Education, Hon. Kristin Booth Glen
Seattle University Law Review
I was an accidental dean. Law school deanship, or any kind of administration, was something that had never occurred to me. But after almost thirty happy and rewarding years as a constitutional litigator, state trial and appellate judge, and frequent law school professor, my dear friend, W. Haywood Burns, asked me to apply for the deanship at City University of New York School of Law (CUNY). Any request from Haywood was a good enough reason for complying. When, to my surprise, I was selected, I had to confront the more profound question of why I should become a law school …
American Indian Students Speak Out: What's Good Citizenship?, Leisa A. Martin, John J. Chiodo
American Indian Students Speak Out: What's Good Citizenship?, Leisa A. Martin, John J. Chiodo
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications - Archive
For much of our country’s history, citizenship has eluded American Indian people. With this in mind, the authors conducted a study to determine the perceptions of eighth and eleventh grade American Indian students regarding citizenship. We wanted to find out what American Indian students believe are the attributes of a good citizen; what activities they are currently participating in that are related to good citizenship; and what citizenship activities they see themselves performing ten years later in life. The results of the research study indicated that American Indian students’ views of citizenship were grounded in community service rather than in …

Efficient Learning For The Poor: New Insights Into Literacy Acquisition For Children, Helen Abadzi

Reading depends on the speed of visual recognition and capacity of short-term memory. To understand a sentence, the mind must read it fast enough to capture it within the limits of the short-term memory. This means that children must attain a minimum speed of fairly accurate reading to understand a passage. Learning to read involves “tricking” the brain into perceiving groups of letters as coherent words. This is achieved most efficiently by pairing small units consistently with sounds rather than learning entire words. To link the letters with sounds, explicit and extensive practice is needed; the more complex the spelling …
Succeeding In The Candidate Pool: Resources Available For Persons Interested In Becoming A Law School Dean, David A. Brennan
Succeeding In The Candidate Pool: Resources Available For Persons Interested In Becoming A Law School Dean, David A. Brennan
Seattle University Law Review
This presentation covers three areas that fall under my supervision as Deputy Director of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). First, I will discuss the two Deans Databanks that I administer, which relate directly to increasing diversity among the ranks of law school deans in America: the Women Deans Databank and the Minority Deans Databank. In particular, I will address how these two databanks reflect the core values of the AALS and how the databanks function in the deanship process. Second, I will discuss the Law Deanship Manual, an AALS publication that addresses nearly every aspect of what it …

First, why become a dean? This is the million-dollar question. It is a critically important question to ask yourself. To adequately answer that question, you must ask some related ones: What are the rewards and challenges of deaning? When is the right time--professionally and personally--for me to be a dean? These are as much personal as professional queries.

Knowing Which Deanship Is The Right One, R. Lawrence Dessem

In order to maximize the chance of a good fit between the dean candidate and law school, the candidate should (1) carefully plan her law school dean search; (2) conduct thorough discovery concerning schools of potential interest during the search process; (3) be candid and open during the interview process; and (4) take time to thoughtfully consider any offers received. Each of these steps in the dean search process will now be considered.
